Paul Thompson Serves Aboard Ship On Arctic Supply Run

Chief boatswain's mate Paul M. Thompson of Amelia Ohio serves aboard the attack cargo ship USS Lee as part of the Navy's annual resupply expedition to Point Barrow Alaska. Five attack cargo ships two LSTs and an icebreaker form the group delivering 37 000 tons of cargo for Naval Petroleum Reserve No 4 across a 35 000 square mile Arctic region. The mission relies on shore reconnaissance air planes to navigate a seasonal ice channel along the coast.

Children Stricken With Polio in Clermont County

Clermont County reports its first two infantile paralysis cases of the season. Jackie and Boswell, ages 9 and 11, were hospitalized in Cincinnati with polio. A prior July polio case, Adamson, treated at General Hospital, shows improvement after an oxygen tent. The Boswell children live in Washington Township and exposure source remains unknown.

Amelia Public School Opens September 7 with Half Day

Amelia Public School will open on Tuesday September 7 at 9 o clock under principal W. J. Tabscott, operating on a half day. Buses run on last year’s schedule. Carl Walker will teach manual training and other subjects. Marie Bushman handles beginning and advanced home economics. Renovation of the new school building has begun.

Contest Offers Washington Inauguration Trip for Students

The Clermont Courier invites junior and senior high students in Clermont County to enter an essay contest on why a president was great. Five local prizes in each division go to state contenders, with two Ohio grand prize winners traveling to Washington for all expenses paid, plus a teacher and parent accompanying one winner.

Theis Couple Plans Golden Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs August H Theis of Summerside Ohio will mark their 50 years of marriage on September 8 1898 wedding at Newport Kentucky by Rev J Bechtold. Open house Sept 5 2 to 5 pm at their home. They have two daughters M W Beatty and R E Irvin four grandchildren and long printing careers.

Veterans of Foreign Wars to sponsor Sept Homecoming at Goshen

The Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars hosts Labor Day Homecoming at Goshen on September 6 at the Goshen school grounds. A chicken and roast beef dinner from 12 to 2 pm, with reservations to August 31 by Mrs Ina Binkley. A baseball game and program planned. Clermont County schools will receive sanitary inspections in coming weeks with records kept by the Health Department and emphasis on milk handling and sewage disposal systems.

Clermont County Names Rent Advisory Board

The National Housing Expediter appoints a Clermont County Rent Advisory Board led by R. E. Gifford as chairman. Members include Earle B. Kincaid, William Stratman, and Jim County. meeting attended by Ralph D. Janney and Thomas M. Hynes. The board may advise on decontrol of defense rental areas, rent level adequacy, and local office operations, and consider individual adjustment cases per regulations.

Milford Considers New Waterworks Plan

Milford Council reviews a revised waterworks program submitted by Alfred Lefeber, Cincinnati consulting engineer, as an alternative to the 240,000 modernization plan previously rejected. The 164,000 proposal includes electrification of the pumping station and rebuilding the system.

Peacetime Draft Registration Opens in Batavia

Batavia opens selective service with 97 registrants on Monday and 143 by Tuesday. Local board members include Dr. G. W. Howard as chairman and James Griffith heading the office. By noon Wednesday nearly 50 visited the board. registration continues by age groups at the Clermont County courthouse. Veterans urged to bring discharge papers.
