Funeral services were held for Fred B. Salmar 85 near Williamsburg last week. Salmar, last living associate of Cincinnati’s Mecca Cafe above the former Hotel Gibson, recalls political gatherings with figures like George B. Cox and Mark Hanna.
A compact digest of old Courier files noting market prices in 1846 Cincinnati flour and bacon figures, 1896 marriage licenses listing multiple couples, and 1921 removal of the hitchrack used for horse hitching to make room for car parking.
Republican men and women join in a county wide pre election rally in Amelia Friday October 25. A chicken dinner at 6 30 in the school cafeteria is available by reservation through Joe Brock or Nellie Maddox. The program starts at 8 00 pm in the school auditorium with speakers including E O McCowen George Bender and Katherine Kennedy Brown. County officials and candidates will attend.
The Clermont County Independent Basketball League held its initial meeting. Officers elected are Joe Nordman president, Dave Koogler vice president, Stanley Anstaett secretary-treasurer. Twelve teams from Amelia Batavia Goshen Milford and others will enter with a $25 entry fee and a $15 forfeit. A one game per week schedule ends mid February with a county tournament after the high school event. The next meeting is October 30 at Amelia school. Felicity may enter at that time.
The Civil Service Commission announces examinations for Coal Mine Inspectors to fill posts in coal mining regions nationwide. Salaries range from 3397 to 5905 dollars. An exam also covers Student Di Health Service hospitals nationwide with a 12 month training period max pay of 1470 dollars including allowances.
The document lists a sequence of radio speeches by Herbert Bricker and Mr Bender across stations WLW WSPD WWVA WHIO WTAM and a WTAM-WLW joint slot in Cleveland from October 24 to November 4. Key dates include October 24 25 28 29 30 31 and November 2 with specified time blocks.

Felicity Franklin district voters head to the November ballot to approve a $60,000 bond for school improvements. Planned are three new rooms a cafeteria library and science room with a sewage system inside toilets showers and a large cistern all recommended by the state education department.
Final preparations are underway for a Halloween parade at 8:00 p m on October 31 starting at the school and ending at the Armory. Prizes will be given for best costumes and a downtown window soap-picture contest is planned as a special attraction.
A mouse control demonstration directed at fruit growers and county workers will be held October 28 at Robert R Caldwell's orchard near Owensville. District Agent W R Dykstra of the Fish and Wildlife Service will lead the program starting at 1 00 p m and cover rodent control techniques for local orchards with invited attendees from surrounding counties.
About 2,000 voters in Clermont County will decide Oct 25 1946 on marketing quotas for the 1947 Burley tobacco crop. The referendum, called under the law, requires a two thirds approval by voters. Marketing quotas aim to align supply with demand and help growers obtain fair prices.
The Felicity Franklin sixth grade class won the Clermont Courier Subscription Contest earning about 300 in commissions and prize money. Grand prize of 100 cash presented by Jerald Fortney publisher. Richmond school placed second Newtown third among eight communities represented.
Milford to host a Halloween event next Thursday night starting with a parade at 7 45 p m from Main and Center Streets led by Milford High School Band. Floats prizes and store window and costume contests announced with Kiwanis Club sponsorship and local donations. Ed Schreiber chairs the Halloween committee and Ray Erion chairs the Kiwanis Public Affairs Committee. The Bethel Garden Club also sponsors a quilt and antique show Saturday from 2 to 10 p m.
Clermont County real estate valuation rises by about nine million dollars following the 1945 reappraisal. Total value reaches 31,783,100 with township and village increases across Batavia Franklin Goshen Jackson Miami Monroe Ohio Pierce Stonelick Tate Union Washington Wayne and Williamsburg.
Batavia wins priority for a new village Municipal Building with a 4x48 foot initial section to house the fire department. The project may later include a youth center library offices and an auditorium. Plans by Wilson W. Kohn Company of Tiffin Ohio are open for contractor inspection.
The Batavia Woman's Club schedules an open meeting Saturday October 26 at 2 30 PM at Batavia Presbyterian Church. Guest speaker is Miss Marie Curtis Rains author of Lazy Liz ard. Public is invited to attend.
Amelia residents see Hitchcock Lane, a 2 mile stretch, designated public road after property owners petitioned the County Commissioners. The measure passed without opposition.
