Marine Reserve duty takes Courier editor on leave

Thomas Fortney managing editor and Courier staff member is reporting for Marine Reserve duty with orders for physicals in Huntington West Virginia on October 25. He enlisted at 16 in Dayton Ohio and served in the South Pacific before joining the paper four years ago, later becoming newswriter and photographer and advancing to managing editor this summer. His wife Mrs Fortney also works part time at the Courier.

Young Man Admits Theft of $13 000 From Bank

Fred H. Herrle Jr. 19 of Milford admitted stealing 13000 from Norwood Savings Bank where he worked as a teller. He led FBI to the cash hidden near his home and it was recovered. He was held on a 2000 bond. He also damaged his sports car in a Sunday accident.

Optometrist Opens Batavia Office On Main Street

Dr J Paul Blankemeyer an optometrist with offices in Corryville and Cincinnati has opened an office in Batavia on the second floor of the Robert Kiplinger residence on Main Street. The office will be open Tuesday Thursday and Saturday afternoons and evenings by appointment.

Amelia High Wins Clermont County Baseball Championship

Amelia High School, after losing six of nine regular players to graduation, rebounded to win the Clermont County Championship with seven straight league wins. The team scored 57 runs while allowing 3, led by ace Gaskins who threw four no-hitters and totaled 5 hits allowed with 100 strikeouts in 45 innings. Batavia High finished 6-1 and both schools advance to the Southwestern District in Cincinnati next spring.

Mrs Dollie Baum Dies at 90 in Batavia

Mrs Dollie Pegg Baum aged 90 died Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital after a fall at her home on August 21 caused a broken leg. She was the widow of George Baum, lifelong Batavia resident, who lived 50 years in the same house. Services were held Monday at Williams Moore Funeral Home conducted by Rev. William T. Paterson of Batavia Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Batavia Cemetery.
