Clermont Countians Sign Freedom Scrolls
Approximately 267 Clermont County residents signed the Crusade for Freedom scrolls via the Batavia Businessmen association. Signatures statewide were tallied Wednesday at the Netherland Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati, with names to be enshrined at the base of a 20 ton Freedom Bell in West Berlin. United Nations Day on October 24, 1950 will feature bells worldwide to honor freedom.

Funeral Service Set Today for Batavia Woman
Funeral services for Mrs. Elsie Pettitt Leonard of Batavia will be held at 2 30 p m at Moore Funeral Home Batavia. She died by hanging Monday in her garage. Widow of Quinn Leonard former Clermont County clerk of courts, her death was noted by three visiting children and investigated by Sheriff Clyde B Dericks and Coroner Frederick S Skxeen. Despondency followed her husband’s death in January.

Emerson A. Sullivan of Batavia has been promoted from Corporal to Sergeant by Headquarters EUSAK. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Sullivan, he joined the Army in 1947, served in Alaska in World War II, arrived in the Far East in 1949, and joined the 8th Army in Korea in 1950. He is a tank driver and assistant tank commander with the 502nd Reconnaissance Platoon and attended Batavia High School.

Lightning Touches Down on Lindale Barn and House
A Sunday storm lightning strike damaged the Lindale home of Mr. and Mrs. Clay Byers and destroyed a small barn. Amelia Fire Department under Chief Francis Strevenard arrived to extinguish several fires in the house. Mrs. Byers fought flames inside until help came but phone service was ruined by the strike. Neighbors called for aid. the barn was lost while a tractor and lumber pile were saved. Electrical wiring and plaster in several rooms were ruined.

Loveland Soldier Missed In Action Then Liberated
The Tarvin family of 405 Hanna Avenue Loveland learned their son Sgt Richard F Tarvin was missing in action since September 10. A second telegram soon announced his liberation from a North Korean prison where he had been a medic in the infantry. He had served 26 months in the Army and was a Loveland High School alumnus.

Bethel Man Killed in Route 125 Crash and Seven Injured
One man died and seven were hurt in Clermont County highway crashes over the weekend. Andrew Mattis of Bethel, 69, died at Christ Hospital after his car ran off Route 125 near his home. investigators cite a heart attack contributing to the fatal crash. Witnesses saw him slumped at the wheel and doctors listed shock rib fractures and concussion as causes. A boy, James Adkins, 12, of New Richmond was injured when a car struck a guard rail on U S 52 near Moscow. driver Herbert Owens, 43, Cincinnati, was arrested for drunken driving. Continued on page 4.

The Rev. R. K. Storey described Missionary P. O. W. being held for three years in a Japanese internment camp and liberated by the U S cavalry during a service at Pilgrim Holiness Church Mulberry on Sunday. Storey who is president of Frankfort Pilgrim College spoke there Saturday night. He and his wife and three children stayed in the Philippines throughout the war.

Newtown Man Found Guilty Of Manslaughter
Merrill Bud McKinney of Newtown was found guilty by a Clermont County Common Pleas jury of manslaughter in the January auto crash near Bethel that killed Edward E. Bowen and injured five others. McKinney testified he took antihistamines and a drink earlier that day and recalled nothing from 10 a m. until the wreck, with defense arguing intoxication.
