Acceptance of Clermont County jail finalized with new $60,000 facility

County Commissioners signed a resolution confirming final acceptance of Clermont County's $60,255 jail building. Sheriff G G Auxier said he would move into quarters midweek and prisoners would likely be brought from Hamilton County by early next week. The jail features three prisoner floors, a Banker's Cell, lavender trim, and detailed utility and security setups.

Grass Fire Burns Forty Acres Monday In Bethel

A grass fire in Bethel spread over about 40 acres threatening homes and barns Monday afternoon. The Bethel Fire Department controlled the blaze within two hours after a lantern was discarded on a trash pile by Marcellus Sprague, saving structures and nearby woods.

Batavia Clinches Clermont Baseball Title By Forfeit

Batavia won the Clermont County baseball race when Bethel refused to play the third game after Batavia won the second 9 8. Bethel had taken the first game, Batavia claimed the second and secured first place money as Bethel forfeited. The contest featured late drama with Batavia scoring the deciding run in the ninth with two outs. Both teams used three pitchers.

Ten thousand catfish donated to county streams

State Game Protector Edgar Anstaett said county streams and fishing holes were fuller than usual after 10 000 catfish were donated by John Gerckerd of Mt. Holly Farm and released in East Fork on Monday due to failing pond water levels. The fish were eight inches long, Anstaett noted.

The seventh full district meeting to plan the 1939 Christmas Health Seal sale was held in Lebanon Ohio at the Town Hall on October 11. Representatives from Adams Brown Butler Clermont Clinton Greene Hamilton Montgomery Preble and Warren counties outlined procedures and discussed fundraising for tuberculosis efforts. 7th Degree Grange Banquet Held in Batavia

The 7th Degree Grange held its annual banquet at United Brethren Church in Batavia on October 14 1939 with 70 members in attendance. New officers were elected and the evening included reminiscences marking the eleventh annual event. Mrs J D Wood gave welcome, Frank B Hoggar t of Goshen delivered the response, and Mrs Lillie Atchley was praised for the entertaining program. Batavia Grange invites the group to return as hosts next year.

A county wide meeting of taxpayers is set for Thursday night October 19 in the courthouse conference room at 8 o clock. P J Jamieson chairman of the Clermont County Emergency Committee announced a Columbus speaker will explain the Bigelow amendments and their likely effects on Ohio fiscal status. Fire at Concord scorches 40 acre field on county farm

Firefighters rushed to a Monday blaze in Concord where a 40 acre tract of dry weeds and grass burned on County Commissioner Sam Ausman’s farm. Deputies Frank Perry and Frank Abbott responded to the call after a cigarette stub was blamed for the fire.
