Ohio Attorney General John W Bricker will headline a Bethel Republican banquet on October 31 as part of a monthly regional gathering. The event, sponsored by the county central committee, will feature other state politicians and require reservations by October 28 through Charles Taylor.
The Williamsburg M E Church celebrates its 90th anniversary with programs starting Sunday October 20. Dr. W J Dunham Toledo district superintendent will deliver the morning sermon. Former pastors Patton Browning Clarke Young Smith and Turley will speak during the week. Turley will close with a Sunday sermon as district superintendent.
County Superintendent E H Pattison reports a rise in high school attendance across ten Clermont County districts. Enrollments grew from 665 in 1934 to 1668 in 1935, a three student per district increase. Grade schools rose from 2577 in 1934 to 2606 in 1935, with district figures listed thereafter.
The Mt Carmel PTA will meet Friday October 18 at 2 pm. The topic is The Protection in Modern Traffic. T J O Brien Traffic and Safety Manager of the Cincinnati Automobile Club will speak. Your attendance will be appreciated.
Federal WPA officials approve a Clermont county plan to improve 195.25 miles of secondary roads across three districts at a total cost of 229,760 dollars with 217,939.50 from federal funds and 11,821 dollars locally. Project covers 67 roads by grading ditching and berming. start date not learned.
Gladys Welch a 13 year old Newtonsville girl sues Clint Moore through her mother over an alleged dog attack that caused 50 wounds. The incident is said to have occurred about 8 p m July 25 1935 at the Moore home when she went to return a borrowed rake from Tom South.
John S. Sloan and a Mr. Hedger, both of Cincinnati, were injured when their car skidded off the road at the eastern edge of Owensville around 5 15 p m Monday. Sloan lived at 2312 Indian Mound Road. Hedger was a passenger.
The Ladies Aid of the Goshen MBE Church announces a Chicken Pie Supper in the School Auditorium on Wednesday evening October 23. Menu includes baked chicken pie, sweet potatoes, macaroni and Waldorf salad, bread and butter, pie and coffee. Supper served 5 30 to 8 p m with 16e plates for children under 12 and 35c for adults.
Williamsburg resident Thomas W. Moorehead dies at his Main Street home at noon Monday in his 91st year. Civil War veteran, former superintendent of the County Home, and longtime church officer, he leaves three children and a step-daughter. Funeral set for October 16 at 2 p.m. at J Isaac Maham funeral home with burial in Williamsburg cemetery. Clermont County bond issue for a new courthouse will not be on the November ballot as WPA funding outlook removes need for a $55,000 bond.
Fifteen educational meetings aim to inform farmers about the economic backdrop of the corn hog industry ahead of a referendum on October 26. Byron Ross announces sessions at Newtonsville, Batavia, Laurel, Felicity, Marathon, and Williams Corner locations starting at 8 p.m. with a team of local committeemen.
R F McKinney of Felicity was re-elected president of the Clermont County Burley Tobacco Association at the annual Board of Directors meeting in Batavia. New officers include J C Browning Pt Pleasant vice president W E Groppenbacher Bethel treasurer Walter Smith Nicholsville secretary and Arnold Anstead Batavia along with Smith and McKinney on the allotment committee. The meeting followed countywide sessions that elected two committeemen and a chairman from each of six tobacco districts. Clermont County has over 1000 burley tobacco control contracts in effect.
Ernest King of Williamsburg sustained a three part jaw fracture an ear torn off plus arm and pelvis injuries when his car hit a telephone pole near Afton on Sunday. Passenger Victor Cowdrey escaped with light injuries.
The K. I. O. fox hunt at Felicity drew strong attendance and enthusiasm. Winners included Millie owned by Mont Burton in All-age field trials, Sport owned by Maurice Henderson in Derby field trials, Pearl and Corkie as Derby and Derby Dogs winners in bench show, and Queen Burton as All-Age Bitch with Big Sam Russell as All-Age Dog and Best in Show overall.
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra prepares its 41st season with Wagner’s Die Walküre at Music Hall on November 8 and 9 under conductor Eugene Goossens. Principal cast includes Grete Stueckgold, Cyrena Van Gordon, Elizabeth Wyser, Paul Althouse, Fred Patton, and Herbert Gould with eight Valkyries led by Lillian Sherman and others. The season also features Oct 18 19 Emery Auditorium concerts led by Goossens, and Jascha Heifetz appears Oct 25 26 as the first soloist. A season booklet is available from the orchestra office.
By an 8 to 1 vote Bethel Village residents authorize a bond to fund a new addition to the Bethel school building. A total of 405 votes were cast with 859 for the issue and 46 against.
The Courier Comment warns Washington allocations may be slow or unlikely for Clermont County amid election concerns. It cites Secretary Wallace on potato control, federal payroll rises, and doubts that a $5 million campaign fund will reach the county before the election.
A bitter reaction targets Martin Luther for comments about Ohio State University players. He retracted quickly, seen as evidence the self styled “Duke of Kent” should have avoided public remarks.
The Clermont County Veterans Association met Monday at the O. N. G. Armory Batavia and elected President Alex Vaughn of Neville, Vice President Irwin Kain Batavia, Secretary Wm. Brossart Owensville, and Treasurer Ben Clark Milford. The group will meet on the second Monday each month.
Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station offers seedling trees at $1.50 to $5.00 per 500 from the County Agent's Office. Orders of 1,000 or more are cheaper. less than 500 not favored. Hardwood should be planted in fall. pines and soft woods in spring. Orders must be for reforestation use only to utilize idle land.
In Williamsville last Saturday the Clermont County All Star beat Mt Washington Tri State 3 to 1 in a hard fought affair. Reed Brown pitched superbly for Clermont allowing two hits and one unearned run, while Lindsey also pitched well for Mt Washington. Rosselott Robinson Bailey and Kinner starred for Clermont as the teams prepare for a rematch next Sunday with Brown and Lindsey again on the mound before a capacity crowd.
William E Montgomery longtime secretary of the Bethel Building and Loan Association died suddenly last Friday morning awaiting breakfast heart attack. Born December 19 1862 in Auburn Indiana he was a miller by trade working in several towns before opening a Bethel plant in 1920. Surviving children include Mrs O R Ulrey Ethel Mrs H Aultman Xenia Mrs J S West Cedarville Mrs J N Liggett Ripley and Wm C Paul in Detroit along with Rev James Shera Montgomery Chaplain of the House of Representatives Washington DC Funeral services were held Sunday at Kennedy Home Bethel.
October meeting at Mrs Ida White home with sixteen members. Topics included Autumn flowers readings and papers by Mesdames Ashton Moore Maham and Mies Holman. Next meeting with Mrs Bude. Fifteen members traveled to Hamersville October 9 1935 for County Federation meeting enjoying a good program and pleasant day.
Pomona Grange gathers Saturday October 19 at Locust Corner for a basket dinner and election of officers. A full day of Grange interests is planned and good attendance is urged.
A wedding was celebrated at the home of Mr and Mrs John Thomas on Knauer avenue with 40 guests. Miss Fanny Carol Jones married Osmar Kennedy in a Second M E church setting, both Batavia residents, with gifts and well wishes from friends.
