Conleys Stage Charity Show For Batavia Athletes

The Conley Group and local friends gave a free benefit performance in Batavia to aid the Batavia Athletic Association. Fred and Frieda Conley, Jim and Virginia Cook, and Ruth and Clare Batley head a troupe touring Canada and Cuba later this year. The event drew volunteers from the show business community and followed their return from a year in Canada. The group recently relocated to a farm near Owensville after purchasing land from Ed Spetz eighteen months ago.

Two Women Die In Batavia Auto Crash On Route 74

In Batavia two women died after a car driven by Juanita Judd crashed into a tree on State Route 74 near Cemetery Lane. Mrs. Margaret Donohoe 59 of Ash Ridge died at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital and Ida Mae Judd 39, mother of the driver, died en route to the hospital. Other injured included Selena Bradley 19 with a right leg fracture and John Powell 57 with left arm injuries. Investigating officials were Clermont County Sheriff Clyde Dericks Deputy Frank Hutchinson and Special Deputy Kyle Moyer, with Batavia Police Chief Ed Colonel arriving later.

State Treasurer Don Ebright To Speak At Clermont Meeting

Don Ebright Ohio State Treasurer will address a joint meeting of the Clermont County Republican Women’s Club and Citizens’ Republican Club at Glenn Este Mt Carmel School auditorium this evening at 7 30. A pot luck supper follows and attendees should bring table service. Ebright born September 17 1902 in Columbus is a 1925 graduate of Ohio State University and has held several treasurer and finance posts in Columbus Akron and the state. He and wife Martha Miller have two children James and Marty Lou.

Milford weighs sites for new waterworks reservoir

Milford officials consider Route 28 east of the village for a waterworks storage tank. Wallace Avenue property owners oppose a Wallace Avenue site, while the present stand pipe and another Wallace Avenue tract are under review. Clermont County’s Miami Township Water District is studying a Route 28 connection with hearings needed before approval. The reservoir is part of modernization plans.

The Olive Branch home demonstration club meets with Mrs. Arthur Tennison on October 19 at 10 a.m. A specialist from Ohio State University will demonstrate room arrangements and members should bring box launches. Earlier, Pierce Township school PTA holds its monthly meeting on October 14 with refreshments.

Welfare Director Reports Worsening County Relief Situation

Welfare director Sam Ausman warns the county relief program faces deeper curtailment with no immediate state reimbursement beyond a 38 percent level. Clothing and nursing care have been cut, schooling affected, and by December 1 there will be no unencumbered funds, with future aid possible only as county credit.

Batavia mayor explains that a three mill levy is needed to sustain current services including street lighting upgraded to 250 watts, refuse removal, police, traffic control and safety programs. The plan aims to improve but may not require full levy, given long term tax rate declines.

Safety contest rules proposed by Clermont County committee

At a October meeting in Batavia the Clermont County Safety Committee proposed a hazard elimination contest. A general science class credit would be earned by participants and prizes offered include 10 dollars first, 7.50 second, and 1 dollar for five others. Essays were to be judged on safety rules 30 percent hazard elimination 30 percent English 10 percent neatness 10 percent originality 20 percent.

Clermont County Commissioners Approve Batavia Road Petition

At the Clermont County Commissioners meeting in Batavia on October 7, a petition by freeholders in Batavia Township to upgrade Curtis Road to a township road was approved. The board allocated 100 to Franklin Township trustees for Church Street improvement in Chile under the county engineer. They also voted to appropriate 5161.94 from county relief funds for October relief and administration payments.

Moscow Captain Graduates From Infantry School Parachute Course

Capt Louis J. Schwartz son of Mr and Mrs John A Schwartz Moscow was graduated from the basic airborne course at the Infantry School as a qualified parachutist. The course trains volunteer officers and enlisted personnel from all arms. Students must make five jumps including a day jump with full gear.

Automobile Fire At Milford Garage Causes Unknown

Milford firefighters responded at 1 15 a m to a car fire outside the Beagle Garage. The burned vehicle had been brought in for repair after a Wednesday accident. Edward Kneipp of Belfast sustained a fractured collarbone in a Wednesday incident while driving to school.

Clermont 4-H Tractor Maintenance Winner Named

Herbert Bogert of the Afton Future Farmers 4-H Club was chosen as Ohio State winner in the 4-H Tractor Maintenance contest. Clermont County clubs, dealers, and leaders organized ten training meetings and produced 58 members, with Bogert earning an all expense trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago to compete for the national award.
