Grand Jury Indicts 12 at Batavia session Thursday

The Grand Jury at Batavia heard 15 cases and 50 witnesses this week. Twelve indictments were returned, three cases ignored. Principal targets included James Davis Sadie Seymour Henry Brown and Joseph Turner for burglary at McNutt Department Store Williamsburg and Tom Castlen Store New Richmond.

Ashland Vault Inc of Ashland Ohio files a federal suit against Enos W Bell doing business as Bell Burial Vault Company of Hamilton Ohio seeking $60 000 in damages and an injunction plus accounting for alleged patent infringements on improvements to concrete burial vaults The complaint alleges a conspiracy and cites public advertising in the Cincinnati Telephone directory Also mentions foreign market share data for 1936 1985 and 1988.

New Pontiacs Take to Highways Friday

Forty five hundred Pontiac dealers gathered in Detroit for a two day convention and drove one of the new 1938 models home for demonstration. The program included a factory tour at Pontiac Michigan and a $20000 banquet Thursday night. Clermont County Husking Contest Promises Cups and Prizes

A large list of prizes plus cups and subscriptions are donated for the Clermont County Husking Contest to be held at Harry Haskell's farm near Batavia on Saturday October 28 at 1:00 p.m. The Clermont Sun offers a silver loving cup to the men’s winner who may retain it for a year and gain permanent possession after three wins. County entries close as Roy Battles invites entrants by Monday October 18, with winners advancing to the State Husking Contest at Upper Sandusky on October 27.

Auto crash on Batavia hill injures five

A Ford V 8 with five passengers left the road on the Batavia Williamsburg hill when the radius rod broke. Berry Hardin and wife of Pleasant Plain were injured along with Chas Bahle and wife and daughter Louise of Norwood, and Carl Mauck of Norwood. Wife suffered broken shoulder and arm. Car wrecked and passengers treated at Bethesda hospital. Westbound Croswell bus collision near Batavia injures Mina White and mother. X-ray pending. Vic Kelch of Sardinia injured his car in a skid near Afton. Leaves on wet roads deemed dangerous.

New Richmond Sees No Bids On $80,000 Highway Plan

New Richmond residents were irked last week as the proposed concrete highway project through town for 80000 dollars drew no bids. Contractors said the state estimate was too low and suggested raising bids about 25 percent before re advertising.

Batavia Garden Club Plans October Meeting

The Batavia Garden Club will meet October 18 with hostess Mrs Ida Griffith. Topics include Carden Memories arrangements and winter bouquet containers led by Mrs Ethel Wilson, bulb forcing for spring by Mrs H L Nichols, and a leaf contest with gourds. The Batavia Woman's Club opened 1987-8 at president Mrs H Nichols. Mildred Morgan spoke on federation advantages. Attendance near 100 percent.

Veterans Plan Unique Dance in Batavia Armory

Clermont County veterans and guests are invited to a Friday October 22 dance at Batavia Armory from 9 to 12 p m. Music will be provided by an orchestra organized by State Treasurer Knisley and State Auditor Ferguson, under Knisley’s direction, with no charge. Before the dance, 8 to 9 p m, the Post and Auxiliary will install officers led by Ralph T Young and Mrs Laura Swing.

Prominent Clermont Residents Summoned

Obituary notices detail the deaths of John L. Marsh 79 of Owensville, Jess M. Jordan Milford, and James Bunnell 63 Loveland. Marsh died from fatal burns after spraying gasoline. he served as county recorder and bank cashier. Jordan served as clerk of the county courts and on the county election board. Bunnell, Loveland Motor Company owner, had ties to Emery Lodge and the Eastern Star. survived by a widow, four sons, a daughter, siblings, and seven grandchildren. Cler mont County districts seek renewal of existing school levies

The Courier clarifies that proposed tax rate changes are not new levies but renewals of existing voter approved levies that lapsed after five years. Elections are to renew these already in place due to lapse of former levies.

Route 74 rerouted plan outlined for Williamsburg Batavia

Officials from the Cincinnati Auto Club and State Highway Department brief Williamsburg and Batavia residents on Route 74. A 2000 foot straightaway is required for Federal aid, prompting rerouting plans and a sale target around year start. Meantime the existing road will be repaired for passable traffic.

New Minister Accepted at Batavia Presbyterian Church

Vernon Martin of Georgetown son of Dr Vernon P Martin pastor of Georgetown Presbyterian and Moderator of the Presbyterian Synod of Ohio has been extended and accepted the Batavia Presbyterian Church pastorate. He is a senior at Princeton Seminary and will begin after graduation in spring. He delivered a sermon at Red Oak Church during the Portsmouth Presbytery meeting in September and was unanimously invited at a congregational meeting led by Dr Earl Norris of Cincinnati.

Howell Inspects County Schools

C. W. Howell the state education department high school supervisor inspected Clermont County high schools last week. A copy of the inspection will be mailed to the board of education soon. A conference of county high school principals preceded the Schoolmasters' Club meeting with Howell leading the discussion.
