Batavia News Briefs Highlight Day Nursery and Local Happenings

Batavia prepares for a new day nursery to open Monday with about 20 children enrolled for five mornings of supervised play and training led by Mrs. Morris Lukemire. Local employers are urged to hire physically handicapped workers during National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. Fire Prevention Week is noted with national loss estimates. A business tour by Clermont County Farm Bureau visits Egg Co op Milford, Caldwell Farm, Eugene Feierting and E L Carter farms, ending at the County Experiment Farm with supper. A. H. Lewis & Sons relocate from Shell Station to former Jack's Station with plans for a used car lot and improvements while Bert and Wallace Berthert step back from Shell Station. Daily noon conference tales on Court House steps offer local color including a wildcat tale from Dayton Parsons.

Daniels to Address County Day

Albert L. Daniels of Greenfield Ohio will address an open meeting for all veterans at the Silver Barn on State Route 125 Friday October 3 at 8 15 p m Clifford Kennedy commander of the Clermont County Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans announced Daniels a former state commander will share a message for veterans and dependents He sits in the Ohio Senate and coauthored the first joint resolution supporting a constitutional amendment to provide a state bonus for World War II veterans at the November 4 election The D A V is a veterans group formed for those who served in war and were wounded gassed or disabled All veterans are invited and women have special invitation to attend

Scouting Training Course Scheduled for October in Williamsburg

The Clermont County Scouters will hold the only basic training course of 1947 in Williamsburg Ohio. The session starts Tuesday evening October 7 at 8 o'clock at the Legion Hall. Dates following will be announced soon.

Milford Fall Festival adds farm produce show at River Side Park

Milford Fall Festival announced a farm and garden produce display sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and Milford Chamber of Commerce. Entries must arrive by 11 a.m. Thursday. Prizes across many classes include corn, wheat, pumpkins, apples, pears, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, eggs, canned fruit and vegetables, and handmade items.

Missionary Mary Adaline Combs Crees Dies at 93

The Methodist Board of Missions reports the death of Mrs. Mary Adaline Combs Crees of Buenos Aires Argentina on September 13 at 93. She was a retired missionary and the oldest living graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University born in Owensville. She married Dr. Charles Drees and worked in Mexico and South America before returning to visit Owensville.

U. B. Ladies' Aid Plans Yearly Work at October Meeting

The first regular gathering of the U. B. Ladies' Aid is set for Monday evening October 6 at Mrs. Louis Bauer's home. A full attendance is urged to outline the year's activities and programs.

Owensville to Vote on Bond Issue

Owensville boards seek voter approval for a bond to fund a new wing for the school building. Superintendent J W Evans notes current facilities are inadequate for future enrollment and that the project would add high school classrooms laboratories a study hall and library. The measure would raise funds to construct the additions in Owensville School District.

Country Club Nears Completion At Terrace Park

The new $70,000 Terrace Park Country Club is expected to be completed about Oct. 20. J. B. Jones, club president, notes Edward Schreiber of Schreiber and Sons Contracting Co. led construction. Six new directors were added: Oral Carter, James Fergus, Charles Hope, Harry Miller, Carl Wenzel, and Jones.

Dorsey’s Market Opens in Batavia

Robert Dorsey opened Thrift-E grocery and meat market in Batavia last week reporting strong sales. Self service free parking refrigerated produce and food lockers are well received. Dorsey directs the grocery department with Carl Eckart in charge of meat. Groceries from Eavey Company Xenia meats from E. Kahn’s Sons. Hours 9 am to 7 pm weekdays 9 am to 9 pm Saturdays.

New Richmond Masons Prepare 100th Anniversary

Buckeye Lodge No. 150 of New Richmond plans a centennial celebration on Oct. 8 with a 6:30 p.m. dinner for Grand Lodge officers and district Masters. A Lodge of Master Masons opens, followed by the Grand Master’s address to Masons and families at the public school auditorium.

Amelia P. T. A. Fall Festival Opens October 4

The Amelia P. T. A. Fall Festival will be held on Saturday October 4 at the Amelia school ground and gymnasium. Amusements for all ages will be provided. Baked goods and fancywork will be sold and a supper will be served by the association. The community is urged to attend.

Members of Company B 147th Infantry Ohio National Guard with headquarters at Batavia pose during training at Camp Perry. A recruiting drive under way has enlisted 3 percent of quota, nearly doubling company strength as Mondays training sessions bring in new signees from all parts of Clermont County.

Farm Tour Attracts 500 In County

Over 500 people toured the County Experiment Farm on Route 50 west of Owensville. The facility, supervised by Albert Lyons and formerly managed by Howard Elliott who has retired, drew visitors from the Veterans Agricultural Training Course and soil and water conservation groups. Attendees included Dr. Harold Borst Myron Backtell from Wooster Station Dr John Boyd Page of Ohio State University and county agents and soil conservation personnel from Adams Brown Clermont Clinton and Highland counties.

Williamsburg Garden Club Opens 1947 48 Year

The Williamsburg Garden Club begins its new year with a meeting at Mrs. William Young A new slate of officers includes Mrs Arthur Ruffner president Mrs William Livengood vice president and Mrs William Gardner secretary and treasurer The club plans an assortment of events including a Christmas decoration contest offering a cash award.

Schreiber Township Trustee Dies in Milford

Edward C. Schreiber Miami Township Trustee died Monday and is to be buried Thursday with services at 9 a.m. in St. Andrew's Church. He headed Schreiber and Sons Contracting Co. of Milford and sought a third term. Survived by widow Anna, three daughters Eleanor Grabill Hillsboro and Anna Louise.

Bicycle rider killed in hit and run near Point Pleasant

Betty Marie Foley 17 of New Richmond died Sunday night from injuries after the bicycle she rode was struck by a hit-and-run driver and she was thrown into the path of another car. She was with 16 year old Ruby Marksberry when the crash occurred. officials said bicycles had no lights. After the initial hit Foley was thrown into the path of a car driven by William K Mueller of Newport Kentucky. no charges were filed.

Fourth Annual Scout Unit Leaders Picnic Held in Clermont County

The Hoy Scout Unit Leaders of Clermont County held their fourth annual picnic at Newtonsville School Grounds on Sept 28 with 32 leaders and families. Contests games races stories and singing filled the afternoon and a covered dish dinner followed. Chief A E Roberts of the Cincinnati Area Council praised the group and presented Judge Halbisсh with the Scout Master's Key and Ten Year Veteran Pin. Next meeting set for Oct 28 at Batavia Courthouse.
