Two heavy freight trains pulled by four engines collided near Perintown at about 2 am Wednesday. One fireman was killed outright, another man had a leg broken, two others injured, with track torn up and cars scattered. Traffic halted until noon and damages run into thousands.
A pleasant Elk Lick school event featuring music and refreshments drew patrons from Batavia Mt Holly Bantam Summit Beth el and surrounding areas. First year teacher Clifford G Myrick earned praise for his methods and discipline as attendees enjoyed refreshments served by pupils and district ladies. Proceeds were satisfactory.
The board of quadrental appraisal in Xenia adjourned last Saturday after 57 days of hard work and completed 34 of their assigned tasks. They will reconvene the first Monday in May 1911 to reorganize as the Board of Review. Dissatisfaction is reported in Xenia and Clermont County over last year’s real estate appraisals for farm land and town property.
Williamsburg undertaker N T Daily adds a new black funeral car to his established establishment. He is a popular, up to date businessman serving Brown and Clermont counties with extensive undertaker work.

The Adams county Board of Visitors visited West Union for an annual inspection of county institutions. The Children's Home houses 25 children, the infirmary 88 adults, and the jail reports no current inmates due to three escapees the night before. No deaths occurred at the Children's Home in five years.
Frank Horn of near Cynthiana lost a hand after an accidental gun discharge while hunting last Friday. He had rested his rifle against a tree and, as he grabbed it by the muzzle to steady it, the weapon discharged, tearing off his hand and leaving him one handed for life.
A barn owned by Will Barg near Summerside burned last Sunday night during a severe rain and wind storm. Lightning struck the structure, consuming several head of stock and a winter feed supply. Estimated loss is $8000, partly insured.
Batavia Heel Co laid off workers for a three day vacation last week with a midweek closing and reopening Monday. The plant employs many locals and is regarded as a valuable addition to area factories.
Frederick Bariaux and his young son on the Williamsburg hill near Batavia were thrown from a horse and wagon when an approaching auto carrying two men failed to slow down. The father suffered scalp wounds and a broken arm. the boy was hurt in several places. Both were treated at William Brothers' home and sent home. James K. Polk and his wife of Colorado Springs California on November 22 donated 480 acres at Calhan to the Summer Tuberculosis Association for a national sanitarium for colored people from across the United States. The Batavia Catholic church changes service hours starting Sunday December 4 with Mass at 8 15 on one Sunday and 10 oclock on the following Sunday. The pastor also reports parish census completion noting sixty two families in the congregation.
Last Wednesday a boiler blast at Adolphus P. Egans fodder shredding near Lynchburg tore into his head. The boiler was claimed in good condition with no earlier signs of weakness.
A clay pigeon shoot held last Thursday in Gregg field behind town drew good attendance and strong scores. Organizers note that clay targets test different skills than live birds, as the birds do not sail away like live quarry.

Charles Justice is scheduled for execution on March 81 1911 after being found guilty of the murder of John F. Shoup in Greene county. Justice was allegedly robbing Shoup's poultry house when discovered, leading to the fatal confrontation.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Haggerty hosted a Thanksgiving Eve party in Amelia with games contests and a lunch of holiday delicacies. Guests included Mrs. Lyman Barrow Misses Retto Robinson Maude C Haggerty Florence Behymer Mary Pommert Cassie Tone Frankie Parker Florence Parker Pearl Ayer and others from Locust Corner and nearby towns. Also in attendance were Fred Robinson John Pomert Willie Seigel Elmer Seigel Victor Nobis and George Behymer among others.
Mary Eliza Dowdney born August 24 1852 in Felicity Ohio was the eldest child of Samuel F Dowdney and Eliza A Sofer. She spent most of her life in Batavia with her sister and cared for children and animals with gentleness. A devoted Methodist and charter member of Batavia Easter Star, she found joy in church and Star meetings. She passed quietly after a life of patience and kindness leaving little grief for those who miss her.
Counties share state aid for the 1909 1910 school year to defray expenses of weak districts. Amounts listed for each county include Paton 1548 86, Highland 1282 90, Hocking 1215 87, Pike 288 45, Lawerence 1768 21, Clermont not listed. County boards should levy tax to cover costs. their levies are likely too low.
Three inmates who broke from the West Union jail were tracked to an old cave in Kentucky by Sheriff Gibboney and a deputy. As the sheriff neared the cave, one prisoner fired but missed. Gibboney shot and killed him, the other two surrendered, and the men are jailed in Adams County.
Batavia Lodge 186 of I O O F nominates C B Nichols for Representative to the Grand Lodge from District 64. Elections occur at the first regular meeting night in December. Members from Wil Nameburg Edenton Newtonnville poktopy and Loveland urged to attend and vote for Nichols.
An engine owned by James Patten and operated by William Pride exploded Saturday between 7 and 8 am on Mrs. Emily McKeever’s farm, a mile north of Williamsburg. Pride died at 12 midnight, with injuries also to George Tireton, Anderson Malott surviving, and others injured as barn and shed were destroyed in the blast. Funeral services for Pride were held Monday at Feesburg.
Mrs Mary A Penn aged 84 on river road suffered a stroke of paralysis last week and is slowly recovering. Her son Major J A Penn stationed in the Philippine Islands was notified by cable. Mrs Blythe an Owensville resident aged 87 also had a stroke and has run a drug business in East Owensville for many years.
A Hillsboro High School Cadet unit organizes a military band with about ten instruments assigned and more to come. Prof. Philip Hall leads the group, expanding Hillsboro's four bands and hinting at a fifth. Batavia already has one band and a colored band is hoped for soon.
