Taxpayers urged to file amended income declarations

Commissioner Robert E. Hannegan urged all taxpayers to determine if they must file original or amended Declarations of Estimated Income and Victory Tax by December 15. Most taxpayers have no further filing until the March 15, 1944 deadline. a subset must amend if estimates were too high or if circumstances changed.

Christmas Seal Campaign Opens and Election Planned

Preparations for a Loveland school district special election on a proposed three mill levy fund current expenses, set for December 14 with Clermont board providing ballots and costs. The 37th annual Christmas Seal sale opens, sending about 5 000 letters with 100 seals each, aiding tuberculosis work locally.

Bomber Drive Nets Bond Sales

Batavia Junior Woman's Club reports more than six thousand dollars in war bonds credited to its buy a bomber campaign begun two weeks ago. First National Bank sold bonds totaling five thousand seven hundred dollars, with purchasers asking club credit. Postmaster Coyle adds five hundred twenty five dollars in bonds designated to the club. The drive continues to December 15, linked with Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Southwest District, headquartered in Dayton. Mrs Paul McAfee chairs. Amelia Woman’s Club also participates. The movement supports a Red Cross blood unit costing eighteen hundred dollars.

Batavia Plans Postwar Sewer System First Program

Batavia council moves to install a complete sewer system after the war starting with a right of way purchase at Wood and Water streets to connect to a future disposal plant. Engineer Walter Manion will advise on site and plant details as council considers disposal location at December meeting. The 76 by 136 foot parcel, bought for 315 dollars from Mrs. Keturah Gomien, lies between Water street and the East Fork adjacent to Allen B. Nichols and Dale Miller. The move aims to address stream pollution concerns while preparing for postwar execution and to widen Water street to reduce accident risk.

Former Batavia Boy Writes From Sicily

Batavia born Corporal Gordon Barker son of Mrs. G A Helmkee is featured in the Akron Beacon Journal for a birthday letter he sent from Sicily. After high school he worked at Goodyear and joined the air corps as crew chief on a troop carrier plane. Barker's diary recounts North Africa and Atlas mountains in wartime, with hopeful lines to his mother on her birthday.

Harry Donaworth Dies After Short Illness

Funeral services were held in Williamsburg at 2:00 PM for Harry Donaworth 43 a longtime Williamsburg auto dealer and civic supporter who died Monday at his home after a brief illness. He leaves a wife and son Harry Jr in the Army two daughters Gloria and Mary his mother Mrs Elizabeth Waits two brothers Jack and Victor and a sister Mrs Helen Blocher.

Batavia Plans Purchase of New Fire Truck

Batavia city council, in a called meeting, moved toward buying a new fire truck with 95 hour pump, ladders, hose and racks. Clerk Majewsky to contact firms and report by December. Estimated cost three to four thousand dollars, paid from the general fund. The current 1 1/2 ton, 24 horsepower truck is sixteen years old and failed on a barn fire near Summerside.

Sergeant Roscoe Tyler Heads to Atlantic City After Furlough

Sergeant Roscoe Tyler departed Saturday afternoon for Atlantic City after a three week furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs R S Tyler of Olive Branch. He reported to a rest hotel in Atlantic City and will be assigned to a US air base to train bomber crews for overseas service. In his career he completed his twenty fifth bomber mission aboard Buckshot and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Summerside Women Plan Christmas Treats for Welfare Kids

The Women's Society of Christian Service at Summerside, led by Mrs. George Nash, volunteers to assemble a Christmas box for Clermont county child welfare wards. Clermont Honors Retiring Agricultural Agent Roy Battles

About 500 people from Clermont county farm groups gathered in Batavia school auditorium to honor Roy Battles, retiring Agricultural Agent now with WLW Farm Hour. Don Riehl, the new agent, asked for farm cooperation as he steps into the role. Battles received several gifts amid a festive program of stunts, music, and dance.

Dr A G Schulze Wins Promotion

Clermont County friends of Dr A Gordon Schulze heard of his advancement in the Teeseke Nimacen Corps of the United States Army. Schulze joined as a vice lieutenant in September 194 and served at the Army and Navy hospital Hot Springs Arkansas then studied Tropical Medicine at the University of Tennessee. He attended classes at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington and graduated in August before rejoining his unit in San Bernardino California this fall.

Oil shortage outlook pins 60 percent for military use

Hugh Boyd of the Ohio Farm Bureau Cooperative Association forecasts continued gasoline scarcity next year with about 60 percent reserved for armed forces and 40 percent for essential civilian uses. He says passenger car supplies will be very limited but farmers retain AAI priority ratings for non highway needs to support food production.

Former Chinese missionary now Red Cross instructor here

Miss Viola Sue Miller of Amelia, a former medical missionary in China, now serves as a volunteer Red Cross home nursing instructor. She recalls Chungking's Gamble Memorial hospital work, building prenatal clinics and nursing training, while noting the hospital was bombed and public health persists.
