Workers unload heavy derricks from cars on the Batavia tracks for an oil and gas drilling operation on the Ansteatt farm west of Batavia. Machinery will be powered continually with two shifts, likely starting Friday, and coal from Brazier station supplies the operation. If successful, the surrounding country could experience a boom.
Edward P. Ziegler receives 1800 dollars yearly alimony in monthly installments. He keeps a one third dower in Helen Chittenden Ziegler’s property valued around 500000 dollars. The dower is waived upon her death, and the alimony has first lien on her real estate. She cannot dispose of property without his consent. The agreement limits sale of property due to large revenues.
The common pleas court heard the State of Ohio versus Fred Trump on arson charges. Twelve jurors listened as about 60 witnesses, including many character witnesses, testified over Monday and Tuesday. The trial advanced slowly and was not finished as press time approached on Wednesday.
At the county commissioners meeting of November 15 two bids for bridge flooring were opened. Batavia Gaul and Thirey offer white oak lumber installed at 88 dollars per thousand feet. EB Arthur offers pin oak at 27 dollars per thousand. Contract awarded to Gaul and Thirey with county reserving old lumber for repairs.
Examiner M A Coe charges Scioto county commissioners with illegally diverting at least 42560 from the treasury for improper purposes. He also accuses them of borrowing on short term notes, leaving county working funds in deplorable condition.
County commissioners in special session set deputy salaries for the clerk probate judge treasurer at 840 each. Sheriff and recorder deputies capped by law at 541.21 and 704.81, raised to 840 by common pleas judge last year. auditor allotted 1,403.88 from 2,000 requested. Totals based on 30 percent on first 2,000 and 40 percent on next 8,000.
The Owensville Grange, now 126 members with about 75 per meeting, will stage the play Just Like a Woman on November 27. Officers elected November 13 include master F A Nitterhouse and secretary Anna L Taylor, with many members serving in roles and on committees.
Arthur Norris of near Felicity died within hours after being kicked by a team horse while grading a road on November 10. The 62 year old father of ten had stepped toward the unruly animals and was struck in the hip, falling unconscious as his teamyard work ended in tragedy.
Residents of Loveland protest George J. Grear opening a saloon at his current restaurant. A 1909 court decision created a resident district by Judge Parrott, and the case will be heard in Loveland mayor’s court with the license held up by the State bond until a ruling. Clermont county saloon licenses were due for distribution last Saturday.

Judge E B Dillon granted an injunction of 80 days stopping collection of a $20 license fee on poultry and cattle foods. The State Millers Association argued the fee would affect about 14 600 people paying about $292 000, while department costs run under $10 000 yearly. Bond set at $5 000. The prior $25 fee law was ruled unconstitutional.

The First National Bank of New Richmond halted operations last Saturday after a board decision to reorganize and reduce capital stock. Assets totaled 157 000 with 84 000 in government bonds and deposits of 48 000. Bank is solvent and depositors are protected according to the examiner. Officials include L. T. Fridman president and G. W. McMurchy cashier along with several directors.
The Deerfield Farm Woman's Club met at Mary Glancy's home on Thursday afternoon November 18. Topics included Waste Household Hints Waste of Food and Waste of Time with papers by Mrs. Carter Mrs. Wacker and Mrs. Patterson. Officers elected for the coming year are President J. H. Patterson Vice President Mary Glancy Secretary Mabel Dudley Treasurer Agnes Atchley and Press Reporter A. T. Prather. Refreshments followed and a contest entertained all attendees.
Clermont county announces a January 1916 corn show in Batavia with essay topics for boys and girls. Students may submit "How to Grow Corn Successfully" and "How to Raise Poultry" up to 1200 words. Prizes: first 5 dollars, second 3, third 2. First prize readers to present at night session.
A jolly crowd gathered last Saturday at Mr. and Mrs. Henry Horns home near Mt. Holly for an oyster supper following Five Hundred and Euchre. Attendees included Wm. Henning, Olin Fagin, J. E. Lytle, Harry Henning and many others with their spouses, plus Miss Anna Drake and Miss Jessie Drake among the guests.
Dr Horace Hamilton born in Batavia son of J H Hamilton died at his sister Kate’s restaurant on Tuesday evening November 9 from strangulation. He practiced in Cincinnati and was visiting for a day. Funeral Thursday from Max Moore’s residence with burial in Union cemetery.
Miss Olive Marshal spent last Sunday in Covington with friends when she suffered an attack of appendicitis and is described as a pretty sick girl.
Dewey Hanes of Arcanum Darke county wins state corn title with 158.761 bushels per acre. The best female record is 102.962 by Leila Jones of Cardington Morrow county. A Crawford county boy produced 130.06 bushels. 22 competitors listed. one near 100 bushels. The piece ends with a poetic reflection by Jennie Penn dated October 15 1915.
The Ohio Penitentiary reports a total confinement of 2,364 inmates with 214 at work on farms and other institutions, 3,807 on parole, and 212 on probation. Officials care for 1,631 confined individuals as winter nears, noting Clermont county towns once larger than the state prison.
The Clermont county livestock tally shows 1428 horses 17807 cattle 1019 mules 8152 sheep and 19048 hogs from district assessor returns. Horses declined since 1914 while cattle and mules rose and sheep and hogs fell.
Ray Walker of Wilmington lands a temporary post under Secretary Hildebrandt in the State. The appointment will last about three months until license renewals peak. Walker will leave his restaurant to his wife during his absence as clerks to help with state work remain scarce.
Mr and Mrs H S Jackson of Nicholsville celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at home on Tuesday November 16. About 60 relatives including children and grandchildren attended and offered many tokens of affection. The couple are described as well preserved and hoped to see several more anniversaries.
A corn show is planned for Batavia next month. The exact date, premium list, and details will be announced later. Judges and speakers will be provided by the State Agricultural Department.
Leesburg post office scene seen as the last act for a bold road crew of yeggmen. They stole about 125 dollars in cash and nearly thousands in stamps next to the safe. Postoffice detectives lag in solving the case. Government pays 200 dollars for information leading to arrest and conviction.
A special venire of 36 names was drawn in the State of Ohio vs Chas Ellis for the Henderson murder near Higgins Port. If 12 jurors who can qualify are not found, another lot will be drawn. Trial is set for December 13 with Henderson living in a Kentucky side shanty boat.

Congressman C C Kearns of the Sixth District chose Gilbert Bauer of Portsmouth as his private secretary. Bauer accepted and will accompany Mr E to Washington after Thanksgiving. Bauer has extensive experience in clerical and stenographic work and previously held a similar post to the adjutant general in the Panama Canal Zone. December 1 marks Kearns first appearance since adjournment with Speaker Champ Clark to call the next session to order.
