New Fire Jeep Joins Batavia Volunteer Department

Batavia Township Trustees and Batavia Village Council jointly funded a 1964 Jeep now converted into firefighting gear by Victor Billingsley and Vic Jr. The vehicle carries a 75 gallon water tank, 200 feet of high pressure hose, pump, siren, lights and extinguishers for grass and wood fires. The joint department seeks new volunteers ages 18 to 45 from Batavia School District, offering training, insurance, a six month probation, and opportunities to serve as part of a 32-member force.

Deadline Near To Fill Clermont County Health Board Vacancy

The Clermont County Board of Health must fill a vacancy before March 1 or the Clermont County Health advisory council will appoint. The council includes mayors and board chairmen. Harry Clark resigned over merit system issues. Dr. Albert W. Van Sickle reported on Elizabeth Seton School sewage plans and a proposed effluent recirculation scheme. He noted possible fleet leasing and two way radios for inspectors.

Two School Boards Seek Special Election for Dec 8

The West Clermont Board of Education plans a Dec 8 special election to fund a five year operating levy of 2.50 per 1000 valuation toboost teacher salaries after a 4305 to 3764 defeat on Nov 3. Bethel Tate district also votes Dec 8 on renewal and a new five year levy costing 6.30 per 1000. both need 55 percent yes. Goshen will not call a Dec election, waiting until the May Primary after rejection of a 600,000 bonds issue.

Milford Man Dies In Three Vehicle Crash

Harold Dickmeyer 60 of Milford died in a late Tuesday three vehicle crash at Branch Hill Guinea Pike and Loveland Miamiville Roads. Otis Blakley 27 of Loveland was injured and later listed as fair. Maurice Heine 32 of Milford was uninjured. Blakley cited for failure to stop.

Grass Fires Worsened by Drought Plague Willowville Area

County firemen fought a 200 acre blaze between Shayler Rd and nearby area as crews from Batavia BMOP and North Union battled grass flames. A two story home burned with a large tree ignited nearby while Day Heights Miami East Loveland and Goshen departments tackled fires along Routes 28 and 48. Other fires reported near Warren Morrow Clarksville and Blanchester with activity lingering near Newtonsville.

County Commissioners Debate Waiver of PUB Connection Charges

County officials question whether the PUB water system can waive all or part of connection charges for services in Glen Este Virginia Lane. The Brinkmans seek compensation for funds delays tied to a financing misunderstanding as nine connections total a balance of 1207. Fire departments paid 250 each from Goshen Miami East and 160 from Owennesville. local officials discuss transition to new commissioners Cann Houser and Anstaett.

Two Prisoners Ill After Drinking Wood Alcohol

Two Clermont County prisoners became ill Monday after drinking wood alcohol. Burton Neal, 39, of Bethel, and Buel Lips, 32, of Cincinnati, were rushed to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital by the Batavia Life Squad. Neal remained in serious condition at Cincinnati General Hospital.

Clermont County Faces Potential Redistricting Split

Republican Rep William H Harsha of Portsmouth warned Clermont County may be removed from the Sixth Ohio District as State Senator Charles H Jones pushes to merge Clermont and Butler counties into the same district. Harsha urged residents to write to Sen Jones opposing the plan. Clermont is the district’s largest county by population. Scioto is second.

Batavia Fire Chief Faces Resignation Request Informally

Mortgage values dip in October says county recorder

County recorder William Shebesta notes 242 more recordings in October bringing total to 342. First mortgages from lenders show Hunter Savings and Loan at 247,910 and Mt Lookout 179,575 while banks and insurers like Western and Southern Life provide 200,000 and Clermont National Bank 103,500.

Board Commends Workers Effort On School Issue

Parolee Arrested as Theft Suspect at Milford Store

Ivan L. Miller, 23, of 111 S Riverside Batavia, arrested behind Rosen Sweig's Dept Store for breaking and entering at a Milford shop. A search began after Esther Hughes could not open her street door. Miller allegedly fled through a locked bathroom and roof. Miller held $160 plus $21 in coins. two cash registers at Nash Pharmacy, next door, forced open.
