Abstracts of votes cast in Clermont County Ohio for the general election held Tuesday November 2 1926. The document lists polling results by township including Batavia North Ty er and Chile areas with figures for various precincts and totals.
The first degree murder case against Scott Workman began in the Common Pleas Court for the August 13 killing of his wife. A lengthy voir dire and jury assembly occurred, with proceedings moving to the murder scene and exhibits, as defense argues insanity, as state rests after Marine testimony. The jury, comprising several named locals, began deliberations after six state witnesses and two defense witnesses testified, with nine motherless children present.
The courtroom was consistently crowded with anxious spectators during the proceedings as observers watched the case unfold.
W J Bulow elected governor of South Dakota born near Moscow and raised on a farm. Self made man with one year of high school, studied law at Ann Arbor, practiced in Beresford for 30 years. First Democratic governor since statehood, majority about 16000 votes. By election day six oclock he received over 60 telegrams of congratulations from New York Chicago Denver Ohio and more. He has four Clermont sisters Mesdames Anstaett Anstaett Ross and Utter.
Lafayette Swope aged 77 died in Cherryvale Kansas on November 3 after a period of illness. A native of Ohio he lived on a farm near Morehead for many years before moving to Cherryvale. He was brother in law of B B Holmes of Florida and related to the Page family of Felicity. He had resided in Hennings Mills Clermont county for some years. He became ill Saturday evening and died Monday.
Ernest Murphy, jailed for automobile theft in Clermont County, is to be moved to Mansfield Reformatory this week after a year in the common pleas court sentence of 2 to 16 years. He had been out on suspension during good behavior and is a Summerside resident.
Clarence J Brown of Blanchester is urged as the 1928 gubernatorial candidate after winning lieutenant governor and November 2 secretary of state election by about 200000 votes over Stephen Young. Brown is described as popular and a winner.
Mr and Mrs W J Tone celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their Locust Corner country home on October 31 with white and gold decorations. A noon dinner honored guests including H R Hopert and wife Miss Cassie Tone L K Barrow and family Wal ter Quick and family Dr E T Behymer and wife Dr H C Behymer and Belle Behymer Miss Nina Behymer Rev F H Russell and wife and Joseph Banford and wife. Belle Behymer and Dr E T Behymer were guests at the wedding fifty years ago. The couple reside in the house built by her grandfather in 1814. The Courier has long visited their home.
The filing deadline for expense accounts to secure a certificate of election is November 12. A $5 check or cash must be deposited with the Election Clerk to forward to the Secretary of State and obtain commission. All candidates and secretaries of political committees must comply.
The article urges immediate prevention of hog cholera in Clermont County stressing vaccination, daily hog checks, removal of sick animals, and vaccination before selling. Average attendance at the first nine bureaus exceeded 100 workers, ranging from 24 in Meigs to 186 in Ashland. Clermont and Meigs counties began work earlier. Clermont reports 199 new membership agreements. Only four townships have reported complete figures. next week will add more details including the township hosting the oyster supper.
