Administration officials fear further revenue losses as trust companies sue to recover war tax payments. The first case sets for trial before December, risking court defeat for the government. The dispute stems from a 1915 war tax provision deemed incompatible with precedents, creating a fiscal and political dilemma for Democratic policy.
Sergeant Major C. W. Burnett age 38 of the First Ohio Infantry Cincinnati and Miss Verna Mae Miller 29 of Batavia Ohio wed in Covington Ky. Burnett aided Camp Perry honors in 1914 and Rifle team member in 1915. They travel to North Carolina where the groom will work, as friends extend congratulations.
The notice lists state game laws requiring a 1.25 dollar hunter license, 15.25 dollars for out of state hunters, written landowner consent, and conspicuous badge display. Quail and pheasant seasons remain closed until November 1917 while rabbit season runs November 1 to January 1 and raccoon season November 1 to March 2. Rabbits prove plentiful with many spokesmen reporting over 20 killed daily since opening.
The club will meet November 18 with Mrs. Breeding as hostess. Current events include New Methods in Warfare presented by Mrs. Aultman, Shelling the Unfortified Town, Is it Against True Ethics by Mrs. Kain, and After the War by Mrs. Davis.
The Central Ohio Teachers Association will hold its meeting in Dayton from November 12 to 18. The program aims to interest all teacher grades with a strong lineup including Dr. Reuben Post Halleck, Dr. William D. Henderson, Elizabeth Howe, May H. Prentiss, and George Vincent.
Batavia Village Council adjourned session hires an expert from Cincinnati University to determine the actual cost of producing power at the Batavia power house. If cheaper, the injunction stands and no new company action. if not, the case proceeds in court with Day service as the target. The test result is awaited.
State Highway Department pursues uniform sign posts to guide travelers now common autos. Highway Commissioner Clinton Cowen issues standard specs for local authorities. Signs to have white letters on black background or vice versa. Six feet high and mounted on wood or iron posts.
Warren county infirmary burned last week causing about 60000 in damage, partly insured, with inmates safely removed. Temporary quarters will be set up for inmates until rebuilding. In a separate case Solomon Gay was found guilty of grand larceny for stealing 120 from a traction line around Sep 17, with a potential penalty of one to seven years. Also warns readers to file election expense accounts within ten days after the vote.
The second Monday after the election is the official canvass day for school boards as required by law. Boards now elect a clerk who serves as clerk and treasurer. James Brower and Hastella M Harvey, two young colored residents of Batavia, were married last week and will live in East Batavia where a home was prepared. Philadelphia reports the champion world egg layer Lady Eglantine produced 814 eggs in 865 days, beating the record by 12. typical hens average about 70 eggs per year.
At the November 1 meeting the board approved contracts for Pike repairs and lumber for several parties, awarded a new Meyers bridge bid to A Bigham, and authorized a $1200 four month loan from Batavia bank for the judicial fund to cover jury witnesses and stenographer costs. bids and bills were approved.
The iron bridge at the foot of Main Street in Batavia is in a bad state of repair. It should be replaced or undergo a general overhaul with a new floor paint and lining. It is described as a disgrace to the county and will see heavier use once the new State pike to Olive Branch opens.
Sylvester Boys oldest son of Anderson and Margaret Boys born December 26 1840 died October 30 1915 after years of devoted service to family country and faith. He endured Libby and Andersonville imprisonment while serving three years in the Union ranks and shared a life of sacrifice devotion and prayer.
In a court of appeals ruling, verdicts from the common pleas court were sustained in W. H. Ireton v Emerson Jester, Irene Clemons v Orley Dericks, and Anna Hicks v Village of Amelia and Chas Pommert, while DePue v Baxter was reversed. Additional matters include partitions, divorces, guardianships, and real estate transfers in Goshen and Bethel.
About two weeks ago H. F. Buerkle released four young Bray squirrels in the courthouse yard with quarters in a maple tree. They were obtained from Fritz Buerkle after capture in youth. The tame squirrels eat nuts from hands and perform for workers and boys, drawing daily attention. Care is given, and it is hoped they are not disturbed.
Rezin Hawkins died October 18 1915 at his home near New Richmond Ohio aged 67. He served in the Civil War with Company A Fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was wounded at Winchester. He leaves a large family, township trustee duties, school board service, and religious work with the New Richmond Methodist Episcopal church. Funeral at Pisgah church was led by Rev Baker Rev Hawk and W Lewis with interment there.
Multiple deeds show exchanges of parcels and lots between individuals and families in Wayne Township and adjacent towns. Amounts include $1 nominal sums and higher values such as $2900 for an Acre at Loveland and a $400 sale in New Richmond.
County election officials returned their order for services from the county election fund and were told no funds exist. They face discounts on payments, with funds not available until February distribution. Law requires payment even when funds are unavailable.
Ohio residents may enter November exams for state positions including guards at prisons and reformatories, and staff at the Lima criminal insane hospital. Salaries range from 80 to 1500 dollars yearly, with various roles such as claim examiners, district deputies, steam engineers, food inspectors, and investigators. Apply to the State Civil Service Commission in Columbus for the official bulletin with times and locations.
A meeting of the Batavia Township Good Roads Association is set for Friday at 7 30 p m in the court house. All interested are cordially invited.
Mrs. Hattie Bennett will sell at auction at her residence known as the Bennett farm on the Bethel car line near stop 87 four percent mile east of Cherry Grove on Thursday November 18 beginning at 9 o'clock. The sale includes a lot of property mules wagons and all kinds of farm implements. See bills for particulars.
Leo Nolder, jailed on burglary charges in Batavia, was turned over to the Government. He faces hearings before a U.S. commissioner and could receive at least five years. Authorities say he may have aided crimes in other states and revealed gang locations and looted goods.
The Batavia Fathers and Sons Banquet at the Presbyterian chapel room celebrated a successful event with a new scout initiation. Cincinnati Scout executive John H. Traeger gave the principal address while W. C. Bishop and others spoke as a Boy Scout orchestra provided music for about twenty five attendees.
