Clermont County to Build New $60,000 Jail

County commissioners authorized a $20,000 bond issue to finance the jail project and set December 2 as bid closing date. Federal approval and a $27,000 PWA grant were announced, enabling plans by Hunt and Allan for a three story brick building with sheriff living quarters beside the courthouse.

Legionnaires Hold Fourth District Conference in Batavia

Frank W. Weaver Post American Legion No. 237 hosted 214 Legionnaires from 48 posts in the fourth district for a Sunday conference in Batavia. Morning and afternoon sessions met at the Armory while a banquet dinner was served by the Ladies Auxiliary at the school auditorium at noon.

Bricker Seeks Governor Backed by Forestville Crowd

Republican governor candidate John J. Bricker spoke to a large audience at the Forestville Anderson township school auditorium Saturday. Bricker is gaining ground daily and his supporters predict his election in November. He is expected to carry Clermont County with Robert A. Taft for U.S. Senator and other candidates.

Batavia Teacher Elected Chairman of Mathematics Section

Franklin D. Morrison of Batavia High School was voted chairman of the Mathematics Section at the Southwestern Ohio Teachers Association meeting in Cincinnati. Morrison has taught plane geometry in Batavia for four years, succeeding Cecil Tower of West Night High School Cincinnati.

Batavia Rotary Halloween Party Draws 600 Masked Guests

The Batavia Rotary Club held a Halloween party at the Batavia Armory with about 600 attendees of all ages in costume. The Batavia School Band led the grand march under drum major Gladys Lewis and Virginia Kain, and six prizes were awarded for the most attractive makeups based on audience applause.

Clermont County Bar Association backs new jail project

At a special meeting in the Probate Court room Clermont County Bar Association endorsed the County Commissioners plan to issue bonds for a new jail and jailer's quarters. The group supported federal aid under the Public Works Administration and commended the board for pursuing the project despite opposing voices.

Pomona Grange Opposes New County Jail Plan

Clermont Pomona Grange at Goshen votes against a proposed jail costing 60 000 with 33 000 county and 27 000 federal funding. A committee visits county offices and recommends lining walls with sheet steel installing metal window casings, new baths, cots, bedding, an alarm linked to bars, and exterior flood lighting to make the jail sanitary and escape proof saving about 55 000 for taxpayers.

Teachers Gather At Goshen School

Clermont County Teachers Association meets Goshen High School on November 10 at 5 P M with two half hour sessions, a 6 15 dinner, then a program including a speech by Charles P Taft on Religion in Politics. Boy Hurt by Auto in Williamsburg Accident

John Lee Shaw seven year old son of Earl Shaw of Williamsburg was struck by a car near home last Monday. He suffered a fractured skull and a broken leg and was taken to a Cincinnati hospital.

Shredder Accident Claims Bethel Man’s Fingers

Jack Mosbacher aged 29 of Bethel was visiting his father in Newtonsville Friday when his left hand was caught in a corn shredder. All fingers were torn off before Dr. Allen Rapp assisted and he was taken to hospital. He is the son of Henry Mosbacher.

Youth Killed In Auto Crash Sunday

James Wilbur Coffey 18 of Pleasant Plains died from injuries after a Sunday 2 A M crash on Backbone Hill between Owensville and Stone Lick. He suffered a fractured skull broken arm and broken ribs and died at Dr Allan Rapp Owensville. Coffey’s body was sent to Fort Gay Kentucky for funeral services. He had a brother who died in a similar crash in Kentucky three years ago.
