State assistant entomologist W H Goodwin visited Ripley after a News Democrat report that a tiny bark burrowing beetle is killing elms in Brown County. James Baird accompanied him and observed dead and dying trees. specimens were gathered for later reporting. The pest, likely moved from Kentucky, works under the bark, destroying inner tissue and girdling trees before larger beetles arrive.

New Pension Plan Aims for Big Savings for Government
Washington reports a simplified pension plan to be proposed by Congress to save about 1 million dollars annually for pensioners and roughly 180 thousand dollars yearly for the government.
