The Amelia village fire alarm drew the town last Friday around 11 as the old school building caught fire from a defective flue. No lives were lost and the structure was confined to the attic and roof with water supply limited but the building is insured and to be repaired promptly.
The Philadelphia Record describes a circus elephant bath that takes a week, uses 150 pounds of soap, three workers, and costs 300 dollars. It notes the oil treatment worth 150 dollars to soften and polish the gray skin, with ears given special care.
Louisville Kentucky prepares a whisky warehouse project with capacity for 800000 barrels, each 47 gallons, totaling about 14 million gallons and about 124 drinks per resident of the United States. Construction begins in two sections of 160000 barrels, at an estimated cost of 400000 dollars. The building will be 482 feet long, 215 feet wide and 100 feet tall, with twelve stories and requiring 10000 yards of concrete and 6000000 bricks.
W Elmer Harmon of Wood Harmon Co New York brother of aviator Clifford B Harmon and Lebanon native presents 60000 for a gymnasium. He will donate 3000 annually for its upkeep and a nearby Carnegie Library site is being sought. Harmon remains a generous Christmas donor to Lebanon’s poor.
The Batavia School Board and Superintendent receive high praise after two recent inspections by Ohio State University and the State School Commissioner. University inspectors recommend continued recognition for three years, noting progress, strong leadership, and adequate equipment. The State inspector reports satisfaction with the school's condition.
A responsible Yellow Springs resident picked over thirty peaches from a single tree marking a second crop. The first crop was abundant with good size fruit and high quality, while the bloom appeared on for the second crop. The final picking would yield fruit about the size of an English walnut.
A social dinner Monday October 30 at the home of Mr and Mrs John Flora celebrated John Floras 76th birthday. Guests included Rev W J Baker and many others though weather and illness reduced attendance. Gifts featured a Morris chair and a silk flag from his wife and daughters Martha and Annabelle.
A treasury department ruling prohibits banks designated as postal savings depositories from advertising that they hold United States depository funds. The department maintains these banks and funds have no right to announce themselves as U S depositories.
The central board of administration plans to put idle convicts from Ohio State Penitentiary to work on the Morgan Station State farm next spring. About 160 men sit idle, with 448 acres to be utilized. Harold Curtis Abbott, a Yale graduate serving a three year embezzlement sentence, will oversee civil engineering for land reclamation and Big Darby Creek diversion.
George A. Burns, the oldest track walker in service on the Pennsylvania railroad, reports his 177,900th mile. He travels four times daily between Greensburg Pa and Youngwood Yard, inspecting 6,725,800 splice plates. Other notable track watchmen include William Young, Dennis Watters, Simon Owens, and Julius Hein, who together have logged nearly a million miles.
Batavia high school presents a five part lyceum course at the Batavia opera house on Saturday November 11 featuring the Castle Square Entertainers a premier male quartet with horn and string quartets two pianists a bass tenor soloists and a dialect monologist proceeds support piano purchase. The program also includes Sylvester A Long The Pierces The LaBarge Musical Company and Ned Woodman. The show has drawn praise from the Grand Opera House Chicago Daily News.
Miss Allie Violet aged young woman died at her Olive Branch home last Saturday evening. She was buried Monday at 2 30 from the M E church in Olive Branch with Eastern Star Bata via chapter in charge. Rev Burdsall conducted services. She had planned to marry soon. A leg injury led to bone decay and amputation, then poisoning of the system and death.
Last Wednesday the Ladies' Aid Society of the M. E. church and the Ladies' Society of the Presbyterian church held all day quilting in their Sunday school rooms. A fine noon dinner was served to members and families. The societies quilt to aid people and forge articles for market with yearly earnings and social gatherings.
Attorney General Hogan announced a probe into penitentiary and state hospital robberies. The board of administration pledged him free rein. Hearings promised for last week were not held and no new facts have emerged beyond those already released by the board in September.
The College of Agriculture at Ohio State University offers a monthly agricultural bulletin for public school teachers and upper grades. Edited by A. B. The Board of Control accuses Ben Chamberlain of the governor's staff, who handles meat contracts for the institution for the blind the deaf and the feeble minded, of supplying inferior smoked shoulder frankfurters and bologna at high prices with underweight pork and waterlogged sausages. He is described as a Harmon missionary in the benighted west.
J O McManis, cashier at First National Bank in Manchester, converted his Ford touring car into a threshing engine. He stationaryed the auto, removed a tire, and used a belt to drive a broom corn cleaner. About one and a half acres were threshed quickly with the makeshift machine.
Jack Cleaver, mail car runner on the C G P railroad, was severely burned last week when a headlight wiring accident caused an explosion while he connected wires under the car. Initial fears of complete blindness were relieved as doctors assess his sight likely intact. Community sympathy pours in for the honest, industrious patcher.
Frank Andrews of Lebanon has perfected a machine that freezes ice without chemicals. It uses coldness from ice production to reduce ongoing costs and can freeze 40 tons daily, a 200 pound cake in four to five minutes. He has patent claims on two powders, blasting and smokeless, with wider deployment potential.
Last Wednesday night about 11 o'clock Willowville residents woke to a blaze at W. W. Fritz home. Neighbors braved the flames to rescue belongings as damage totalled about 75 dollars, fully covered by insurance, drawing community sympathy.

H A Moore, undertaker, adds a new cab to his fine establishment and plans to deploy a wagon to carry flowers and provide chairs. The service aims to enhance comfort and meet the needs of the business, boasting one of the most complete outfits in the county.

District Supreme Court records show 40 percent of divorces stem from runaway marriages and 30 percent from underage brides or grooms. Eighty percent of suits are filed by women with fewer than 10 percent of couples being parents. One divorce suit per four marriage licenses. The mother-in-law is largely exonerated, siding with the son or daughter in law in over half the local settlements.
The 1911 export value of cars and parts from the United States will total about 20 million dollars, per the Bureau of Statistics. Nearly 14,000 machines were sent abroad, with about 5,000 shipments to Canada, a sharp rise from 1901 when exports totaled 1,009,000 dollars.
Monday October 30 marked Mrs. Sarah Bigger’s 99th birthday. She lives with daughter Mrs. Joseph Fleming on West Market Street, Xenia. Known as Mother Bigger, she is Greene County’s oldest resident, born 1813 in Butler County and widowed twice, with a long, happy life and hope to reach a century.
The Soldiers' Orphans Home at Xenia loses its legal management after abolition by the central board bill. The move is labeled the ninth blunder of the late general assembly and president by the governor. It adds justification for an extra session though Mr. Harmon fears giving the legislature another chance to squander and rob.
Last week two marriages were performed by Mr. Lease in Nine Mile and Hamlet with local couples including Robert Shkolnek and Miss Ross Kronenberg and Peter Kobale and Miss Barbara G. Kunkel. Mrs. L. B. Arnold of Denver endorses Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for coughs and bronchial trouble, noting it has always given relief and is sold by all dealers.
