Red Cross Closes Flood Relief Effort in Clermont County

Clermont County ends Red Cross Disaster Office operations after aiding 216 families with 7230 dollars in emergency and rehabilitation relief. Shelters were located at Locust Corner and Moscow schools with New Richmond canteen assisting. 82 percent relied on aid for aged or widowed and dependent children.

Poppy Day Planned in Batavia by American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary unit of Batavia announces Saturday May 20 as Poppy Day with veteran made poppies for sale at the Frank W. Weaver Post 237. The unit held a Poppy Poster contest in Batavia Girl Scout Troop awarding cash prizes to Edith Halbisch and honoring Eleanor An krom with a mention.

Benefit Dance at Batavia Armory June 5

A Batavia Armory benefit dance will be held Saturday evening June 5 for the Batavia Athletic Association. Music will be provided by Jim McCloy and his Moonlighters who are donating their services. Bill Massey serves as association president and Herbert Hogberg as secretary.

Evangelist Harold Newlan to Lead Batavia Church Services

Harold J. Newlan, an evangelist with prior links to Clermont County, will lead a special meeting at the Batavia Church of Christ starting Monday night May 31. He has pastored in Indiana Kentucky and Ohio and directed revival meetings across several states. Daily Vacation Bible School runs 9 to 11 am with 8 pm services nightly. Lilburn Simmons is the local minister.

Clough Pike Woman Killed by Accidental Gun Discharge

Mrs. Joann Smith, 47, died at her Clough Pike home last Thursday from a .22 caliber bullet wound to the head. The rifle discharged as she reached for a lantern in front of the house to locate a rooster. Survived by husband William G. Smith and daughters Lantha 24 and Mary Jo 14. Sheriff Clyde Dericks investigated the accident.

Rev Vernon Martin Named Moderator Heads To New Parish

The Rev Vernon Martin former pastor of Batavia Presbyterian Church and current moderator of Cincinnati Presbytery is slated for a new assignment at a Wilkinsburg near Pittsburgh church. No moving date set yet. he led the local church about five years ago. The Mt Pisgah Church service with Rev William Tate Pateson at 2:30 pm on Sunday, May 30.

Army Recruiting Station Opens in Batavia

An Army and Air Force recruiting station opened at the National Guard Armory in Batavia on May 26 under MSgt. A. D. Buckmaster commanding. Local youths can apply for enlistment in Batavia, avoiding trips to Cincinnati for information and exams. Bruce Paschal of Batavia joined Sphinx at Ohio State University on May 21 with 13 other students.

4-H Camp Drive Launched By County Rally

The county kicks off a fundraising drive to raise 16500 for a regional 4-H Camp with a Bethel mock trial in the school auditorium featuring Cincinnati judges and local officers. The Feldman Farm and Home Center rally drew 660 attendees and showcased 4-H activities and selling demonstrations. June township chairmen will lead the drive across Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren counties. The trial of Claude Harvey for cutting with intent to kill is underway in Clermont County Common Pleas Court with Judge Harry Britton presiding.

Heckathorn Hearing Set for June 4

Loren Heckathorn seeks to reclaim the Clermont County Home post after resigning last year and attempting to withdraw. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for June 4 as Clermont County Commissioners had appointed Hugh McAfee to the post. The state attorney general ruled that Heckathorn’s withdrawal was illegal because it was not presented to the commissioners or their representative.

Village adopts building zoning code for Batavia

Batavia’s village council enacted a building code and zoning ordinance based on a National Board of Fire Underwriters model. The mayor says permits are not needed for papering or painting but required for new construction and remodeling and invites written public criticisms to refine the measure.
