Leggett Sentence Reduced on Appeal
Mrs. Ruth Leggett of Bethel had her case reviewed by the Court of Appeals on May 19 reducing the charge from assault with intent to kill to assault and battery. The court upheld the judge’s jury charge and limited the maximum sentence to six months and a fine. In a separate matter, C. L. Bredwell et al. v. Leslie Carter and Lowell Behymer, the local court ruling on leased property was upheld.

A Clermont County jury awarded Carl Tucker 2000 dollars for injuries from an auto accident on September 29 1945. Tucker was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Carrol McKinney which struck the Emerson Trees car parked on a Bethel street.

10 000 Bonus Applications Processed Daily
A total of 1 850 veterans from Clermont County made application for the state bonus payment in the first eleven days after blanks became available. By the end of May nearly 700 000 applications were staged by the fund quarters in Columbus and records of about 10 000 veterans are being processed daily. To date only a few local veterans have received benefit checks.

Penicillin Treatments Given Seventh Time Save Bethel Woman

Memorial Day Parade Honors Veterans in Batavia
Memorial Day was observed quietly in Batavia with most businesses closed. Local veterans groups joined a parade at 11 a.m. and honored war dead with salutes and flowers at Batavia Cemetery. A ceremony followed with a salute at Eli Speidel’s grave and an address by Rev. Thomas J. Coleman.
