Trial starts in second degree murder case of George L. Pownall

The George L. Pownall trial opened in Common Pleas Court with a jury of 12 and one alternate. Prosecution presented autopsy and hospital testimony, while defense cited insanity. Witnesses described the shooting of Mrs. Bertha Mae King, Pownall’s housekeeper, and noted Pownall’s recent hallucinations.

Fire damages Milford Hardware store. $1000 loss likely

A blaze at Milford Hardware Store on Main Street caused about $1000 in damage. Clerk Robert Philhower, 19, suffered burns while kerosene ignited. he was treated at Bethesda Hospital after prompt aid from Dr John Krone and store staff. Firemen, aided by a patrolman guiding an ambulance through traffic, controlled the fire quickly. stock was largely unharmed and the building insured.

Batavia Woman's Club Holds Year End Meeting

The Batavia Woman's Club final meeting of the year was held last Thursday at the country home of Mrs. Robert Caldwell near Owensville with a noon picnic. President Mrs. Wm. Jenike called the meeting to order at 2 pm and the planned calendar program was presented. Members enjoyed Mrs. Caldwell's hospitality.

Improvements Planned for Memorial Park on Route 52

NYA News reports improvements to Memorial Park on Route 52 near Point Pleasant, expected to finish by August per George Munso NYA Area Supervisor of Clermont County. The project adds four picnic ovens a shelter house a 75 foot flag pole an electric pump with drinking fountain and landscaping. Twelve Clermont youths are employed on the project gaining experience in concrete carpentry masonry and landscaping.

Drivers Licenses Granted After Saturday Examination

An automobile drivers license examination was held in the jury room by Patrolman Kearns of Georgetown. Defense witnesses extend trial duration as prosecutors prepare

Indications point to at least another day of testimony with numerous defense witnesses yet to testify. It is believed Prosecuting Attorney Roberts may take the stand to present the State's case.

Batavia Junior Woman's Club Organized with 29 Charter Members

The Batavia civic group formed under the Batavia Woman's Club guidance on May 18 at Mrs. A. P. Garner's home. Mrs. Garner presented the constitution to 29 young women who approved and joined as charter members. Officers include Jean Moyer president and Helen Reynolds recording secretary, with committee chairs for program Rosanna Hogberg and project Margaret Maxwell. Masonic Centennial and District Meeting at Felicity

A district meeting of the 6th Masonic District and reception for Grand Master Harry Myers will be held Friday June 2 at 8 PM in Felicity. Distinguished guests include Past Grand Master L. B. Odd Fellows Meet in Batavia Lodge Gathering

A large crowd from Clermont and Brown counties attended the Batavia Odd Fellows lodge gathering with Hamilton joining in. Deputy Grand Master Edward Brunk spoke, along with BenNet of Norwood and Past Grand James M. Fitzpatrick of Bethel. Examinations were held, Ingram won first prize, and a Fulton’s Grove picnic was announced for July 2 and 8. Eleven districts were represented with 175 members present. New Richmond brothers scheduled a mid June carnival for lodge benefit. Ice cream and cake followed the meeting.

Tragic double murder suicide shocks New Richmond area

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Andres Padero 47 a Filipino butler and his ex wife Pauline 33 who were killed by Padero on Sunday in Gray's Lane two miles west of New Richmond. After abducting Pauline from Route 52 she was shot and Padero then killed himself with a sawed off rifle. Police and officials arrived as the car became stuck in mud and Padero fired at Deputy Perry before turning the weapon on himself. The couple leaves two children Florence 14 and Andres Jr 8.

Poppy Day Observance Planned by Batavia Legion Unit
