Trustees Debate Gas Tax Refund Plan in Clermont Court

Clermont county township trustees met in Batavia to vote on refunding $500 for each of gas money totalling $7000 to pair with $8000 from County Commissioners for poor relief under county supervision. Five favored, six opposed, two supported with conditions. no one present. The plan runs to Jan 1 1934 with county needing to raise $15,000 to attract state cooperation through the Welfare Board.

Veteran Joseph W. Homan Dies at 92 in Batavia

Civil War veteran Joseph W. Homan aged 92 died at his Batavia home after a brief illness. Survived by widow, three sons Harry Ralph and Frank, and three daughters Miss Mary Mrs. Harry Fuller and Mrs. H M Kain. Funeral at home Thursday at 2 p.m.

Temporary Bridge Planned at Batavia After Flood

State and county officials approve a temporary wooden bridge at Batavia to replace the flood dismantled span. Pringle Construction Co will build under state supervision with eight hour shifts, pile driving 86 ft piles, and local lumber purchases when possible.

Banks to Close Wednesday Afternoons in Clermont County

Clermont county banks will close on Wednesday afternoons during June July and August. Citizens are urged to note the schedule and govern themselves accordingly.

New Richmond Board Fills Three of Four School Vacancies

At a Monday night special meeting the New Richmond school board appointed three teachers. High school posts went to Herman Fagley of Bethel, a former Williamsburg principal. Elsie Jane Wolf of Wilmington was named commercial teacher. Stella Day of New Richmond was assigned to grades.

State to Help Erect Temporary Bridge on Route 74

State Highway Director Merrell said the department will cooperate with Clermont County to build a temporary wood bridge on State Route 74 over the east fork of the Little Miami River at Batavia. The move comes to restore safe traffic as the present bridge, badly damaged by high water, is deemed dangerous. The plan awaits a permanent structure funded by the legislature. The conference was led by Rep. Claude S. Coyle and Forest E. Ely with Clermont County officials and deputies participating.

Carnival a Success at Armory Sponsored by American Legion

The Armory carnival sponsored by the American Legion Saturday night netted nearly $70 for the boys. R. F. Erdman won the radio prize after several hundred chances were sold. Attendance was decent and those present enjoyed the event.

Death Notice for George W Mattox of Texas

Former Clermonter Word reports the death of George W Mattox who lived in Beaumont Texas. He married Myrtle Riggs of Greenburg Indiana and raised three children. Survived by his widow and siblings Elijah W H Mattox Jane Behmer and Elijah Bennett of Cincinnati. Interred in Texas.

Flea Beetles Hit Tomatoes. County Agent Recommends Sprays

County Agent Wilson reports flea beetles are harming tomato crops and other plants. He advises 85-50 bordeau mixture with 2 to 24 pounds calcium arsenate or arsenate of lead as a spray, or 20-80 copper chrome dust with 10 percent arsenate of lead or calcium arsenate for dusting. Treatments also control other insects and diseases on tomatoes or potatoes. full mixing directions at the County Farm Bureau Office.

Taft Announces Favorable Myers Ruling on County Petition

Charles P. Taft II announced that George S. Myers Secretary of State through his deputy George M. Neffner issued a favorable ruling on the County Home Rule petition. The number of required signatures will be set in Columbus based on the 1980 governor vote totaling 195671. Petitions for constitutional amendments or referenda will use the 1932 vote as a base, about 26 percent higher. Summit schoolhouse sold at public auction for 468, Eliza beth Kohl of Cincinnati was top bidder, with plans for a tourist camp reportedly in mind.

Heavy flood damages in Clermont County Ohio

Unusually heavy rainfall battered the Ohio River area causing extensive road and bridge damage from Batavia to Milford. Route 50 at Stonelick bridge and Nine Mile road suffered loss of bridges while the Batavia bridge collapsed with a crumbling pier. Farmers face uncertain losses.

Local Scholars Awarded for Miami University Test Results

Thirty Clermont county high school students took the Scholar ship test at Miami University on May 6. Ten pupils received certificates for high subjects. five students stayed to receive diplomas the day papers were scored, so their names were not in last week’s list. Names include C. E. Memorial Day Memorial Services Across Counties

Memorial Day observances will be held May 28 to May 30 across Batavia Owensville Olive Branch Mt. Pisgah Clermont and Goshen areas. Burglary Convict Sentenced for Hen Theft in Stonelick

Wm Ward of Stonelick was convicted of burglary in Judge White's court last week for stealing four hens from E. W. Patchell and sentenced to a term of one to seven years in the penitentiary. He was transported Monday.
