A washed away middle pier on Route 74 Batavia bridge leaves a shell in place and a danger to travelers. Guards block crossing as damage to west abutment and surrounding roads triggers calls for a new bridge to prevent more losses. The East Fork flood damages plants and roads, the second flood in seven weeks.
Weather postponed all games last Sunday. Next Sunday May 21 schedule features Batavia at Withamsville N R Merchants at Nobis Supply Laurel at Williamsburg N R Tramps at Bethel Neville at Amelia Bethel Felicity unite to form semi pro club at Burke Park Bethel Ralph Griffith manager Natty Altman booking games.

Clermont County Relief chairman urges eligible boys aged 18 to 25 from families receiving aid to sign triplicate Emergency Conservation Work applications. Reports indicate a county quota of 30. signups must be completed at the relief office for examination at the recruiting station.
County Commissioners Auditor Ketchum and Prosecutor Roberts lead about fifty citizens to Columbus to urge Governor White and State Highway Commissioner Merrill to approve a new Batavia bridge. They argue inspecting the structure could prevent accidents and save lives.
Maxine Goodwin formerly of Bethel won first in twelfth year English at the district scholarship tests held with the county music festival in Oxford on May 6. Participating counties included Montgomery Preble Hamilton Clinton Brown Butler Miami Clermont Highland Warren Shelby and Drake. The honor carries a scholarship to an Ohio university or college and Maxine is a Wilmington High School senior. Local schools sent many students. the music festival drew strong praise for band and orchestral music.
Miss Annabel Flora hosted a party for Miss Virginia Slye daughter of Mr and Mrs Karl Slye as her marriage to Mr Karl Mattox approaches in June. Sixty guests attended with floral decor and refreshments following gift admiration. Miss Slye a young teacher and Mr Mattox a Union Central Life Insurance Company employee since high school graduation six years ago.
The Williamsburg High School commencement occurred Friday night in the auditorium with a large audience. The program lists the processional, glee club numbers, awards, diplomas, and benediction, detailing graduates such as Leona Croswell, Dan Prewitt, Rosella Burger, and Maxine Vaughn among others.
Batavia Creamery Company, dissolved two weeks earlier by court order, sold after appraisal for 7283 dollars to a Milk Producers Union. A receiver had held the plant for a week. it will resume operation immediately making ice cream butter and cheese. Attorney Price Osborn of Norwood represented the Union and Nichols Speidel Nichols for the Creamery. The plant is in good condition and expected to be profitable.
Clermont county ranked 8th in the district as results from the May 6 scholarship test at Miami University arrive. Tom Dustin aged 62 and a former Batavian died at his Dayton home after a brief illness. He was the son of the late George Dustin and had lived in Dayton since leaving Batavia. Survived by his wife and several children and his brother Dr. Paul Dustin, with a sister Mrs. E W Potts. Funeral services were held Sunday at Moore Funeral Home and burial was in Union Cemetery.
The Clermont County Bar Association will hold a social and business gathering at Terrace Park Country Club on Thursday May 25. A golf tournament starts at 1 p m dinner at 6 p m and the business meeting follows.
The Clermont County Home near Batavia was badly flooded Sunday with about 12 inches of water in the basement. Farm land was covered, corn planting near finished, and hundreds of loads of driftwood washed in and remained. No loss of life. All stock moved to high ground. Mr. Houser and assistants managed the response.
The Lake Allyn dam at Highland Park, a multi acre artificial lake, is in bad repair and tested by weeks of heavy rain. If the dam fails Olive Branch could suffer severe consequences, so authorities urge attention to prevent loss of life.
Batavia Woman's Club hosted Mrs Harold Wilson and about fifteen Vesta Club members from Williamsburg for Reciprocity Day. Mary Wertz contributed New England Music readings and Rev Huecker performed readings. Music was supplied by Shirley Wilson Don Schultz Don Schultz Don and Donnie Schultz Mrs George Stewart and Mrs Charles Massey. Refreshements followed social hour.
New Richmond and Moscow joined eight other Ohio valley towns Friday night to form the Ohio Valley Flood Control Association. They plan a large federal dam system modeled on Dayton's Miami River project to regulate water along Muskingum Scioto Kanawha and Big Sandy rivers. Mayor Andrew Colonety of Maysville was named president with E H Leonard of Manchester as secretary and treasurer. New Richmond was represented by H C Reed Hampshire Buckley bank president and Forest Hinson.
Batavia Chapter O. E. 8S. held its annual inspection Thursday night with Mrs. Rein of Ripley as inspectress. One hundred guests attended including Columbus officers Mrs. Bessie F. Boice grand secretary Mrs. MecGaudy Mrs. Bristow deputy grand matron and Mrs. Margaret Rose grand marshal of Wilmington. The inspectress complimented the chapter on its excellent work and about 160 enjoyed refreshments during the social hour.
The P Sullivan Shoe Company of Williamsburg ends a weeklong layoff after employees protest wage cuts. A Friday wage-restore deal allows workers to return Monday May 16 if Georgetown men resume work. Payroll about 3500 weekly aids town. parade led by Williamsburg School Band marked the week.
Secretary of State George Myers assailed the Highway Department's proposed state police for the motor vehicles bill, calling it a high handed move. He argued costs exceed New York and Ohio gains little policing power, urging that lawmakers did not mandate a state police system and that the plan imposes tax burdens and few officers per county.
The Mt Carmel P T A will meet at the school Friday May 19 at 2 o clock. Mrs A H Wilson of Newtown will install officers for the coming year. Batavia P T A held its first meeting the day before with talks on goals, state and national organization benefits, and officer duties. Several new members joined and the group urged community participation for children’s welfare.
Miss McGraw the domestic science teacher at Loveland will conduct a sewing class starting June 1 for women and girls who wish to learn sewing. The Red Cross provides all materials for those unable to buy their own and will cooperate with county 4H clubs in offering materials for similar projects.
A cloud burst over Batavia Saturday overtaxed the North street sewer causing several breaks. Cellars flooded yards and gardens, and the town resembled a running river for a time.
The Ohio Tax Commission informs county Auditors that cigarette licenses for 1938 must be secured by May 22, the fourth Monday of May. No extensions are allowed. Retail license fee remains 25 dollars. dealers active on that date pay the full year fee.
More than 200 attended the Batavia Armory carnival and minstrel show. Officials announced a repeat event next Saturday May 20 with a radio prize. High water delayed ticket distribution. new attractions and refreshed minstrel acts with new jokes and songs will be added.
Clermont Grange No 2877 New Tonsville met May 9 with 60 members and 12 visitors, two demits. Nineteen new members were voted for First and Second degrees. 17 attended due to illness, receiving both degrees for a 90 attendance. Drill by the group pleased all. Next meeting May 28 Wayne Grange to confer Third and Fourth degrees. lunch served. Grangers invited to visit.
