Ri ce Cafe rush and a big Batavia family reunion

In Batavia a busy noon at the Rice Cafe when a long distance call from Switzerland interrupted customers. The Rice family learned son Robert, stationed in Germany after visiting Rome and the Vatican, was on a return trip. Sunday May 19 marked a Schieszler family reunion with five brothers arriving from various cities for a long overdue gathering dating back to 1902 in Prussia.

Poppy Day Saturday Seeks to Sell Popies for Disabled Veterans

Saturday May 25 is designated Poppy Day with a final drive to sell poppies made by Ohio veterans. The American Legion Auxiliary leads the effort under Russell Morgan as Poppy Day Committee chair, to aid disabled veterans in hospitals and those seeking civil life.

Hammond Given 107 Year Term In Grand Larceny Case

Raymond Hammond, 47, convicted of grand larceny before Judge Harry Britton in Common Pleas Court. He was sentenced to serve from one to seven years in the State Penitentiary. Mrs Florence Woods of Batavia accused the Hammond couple of stealing jewelry and clothing. Eliza Hammond, 19, faces trial in May.

George Hotel of New Richmond to Open After Remodeling

The George Hotel of New Rich mond is to open to the public within a few days after a complete remodeling. It is among the oldest hotels in the state. G. D. Mattingly, who leased it, previously owned the Green Trees of Amelia, sold June 1, 1945.

Officers stop vehicles to inspect brakes horns wind shield wipers headlights tires rear lights and other equipment like steering gear glass and mirrors to reduce rising accident rates after rationing ended.

Posthumous Silver Star for Wyle Little

Wyle Little of Evansville Indiana and Washington D C received the Silver Star posthumously for gallantry at Fort Mills Corregidor Philippines on April 28 1942. He crawled 200 yards under shell fire to replace the flag pole flag despite danger inspiring his command. Little died en route to Japan after joining the March to Bataan and perished on a prisoner ship from Manila. He was a University of Cincinnati graduate and ROTC member.

County to Open Road Improvement Bids May 27

Cler mont County plans to award contracts May 27 for an estimated 20 000 in road improvements. County Engineer Carl H. Rush formed the estimates and bids will be opened for 24 additional projects across the county. The largest project is about three miles on McKeever Pike in Williamsburg and Jackson townships estimated at 6 479. Other significant plans include two projects on Owens Pike and a 2 ½ mile Newtonsville Pleasant Plain stretch estimated at 5 419.
