A 225000 dollar project was authorized after 155 residents signed a petition, with financing planned by bond issue and no new taxes. VFW Poppy Sale Set for Batavia Saturday
Batavia VFW Post 3954 and Auxiliary prepare for the annual Buddy poppies sale on Saturday May 19. Auxiliary members will man the streets selling poppies all day and only VFW members and Auxiliary are authorized to sell them. The program began in 1922 and poppies are made by disabled veterans with World War II veterans assisting this year.

The American Legion Poppy Sale is set for Batavia on Saturday May 25 with Girl Scouts selling poppies on village streets. Poppies are handmade by Ohio veterans including men in hospital beds and funds support disabled veterans. A Navy representative from the Cincinnati recruiting office will visit Batavia’s Post Office on Friday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. to answer questions on service schools educational benefits and enlistment concessions offered before October 1946. The three year enlistment offers up to 48 months of education, tuition up to $500 per year, and $65 monthly living allowance. Frank M. Kremm of Route 4 Batavia was recently discharged from the Navy.

Joe and Pete Urban have purchased a garden tiller style machine that stirs soil to six inches depth rather than plowing. Pulling it with a tractor, the device uses a central lister blade and curved arms to break clods and mix fertilizer and cover crops near the surface. The Urbans, recently discharged from the Army, farm 470 acres and see advantages over traditional plowing and disc harrow methods.
