Memorial Day observances feature a new Batavia Legion drum corps with public debut, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts marching under Legion guidance, the Batavia Concert Band, and a guard of honor by the National Guard. Eli H. Speidel will deliver the address at the Batavia cemeteries, with services also planned at Old Bethel and Owensville cemeteries and Laurel Community Church with Arthur Behymer as principal speaker. Decoration services are set for Olive Branch Church on June 2 at 2 p.m. Everyone is invited.

Highland Park Sold to Rotary Club for Camp Use
The Highland Park property was sold last Monday to the Rotary Club of Cincinnati, which has used it for several summers as a camp for Cincinnati crippled children. The club plans improvements and seeks cooperation from Batavia business leaders and the Band and picture show management. County Commissioners will be asked to improve the Olive Branch road to the grounds. Batavia will benefit from most of the trade.

Frederick Hollifield 27 of Bethel Ohio died instantly when his car veered struck a curb along the pike near Chisel Bridge Kentucky leaped 20 feet and crushed his head. His brother identified the body Robert Rust 28 severely injured but likely to recover. Hollifield sent to Baltimore North Carolina for burial.

Legion to Fund Ba tavia Band Concerts This Summer
Frank W. Weaver Post 237 of the American Legion will organize funds for the Ba tavia band concerts. The series runs one night weekly in June July and August with Friday or Saturday dates. Band leader P F Jamieson says the group is stronger this year. Aging resident Chas Dixon dies after brief illness
Chas Dixon aged seventy died suddenly last Tuesday after a few hours illness. He collapsed at work while loading a culvert pipe and died en route home, with friends unaware of his passing. A longtime town resident and respected figure, he belonged to the Norfolk Masonic lodge and the Second M. E. Church. Funeral Thursday with burial in Union Cemetery.

Loretta Clark mother of Deputy Probate Judge John Clark died at her home in Miami Township Friday at 11:15 from double pneumonia aged 62 after ten days illness. Survived by three sons John Chas and Gene and daughter Irene. Husband died in 1915 a traveling salesman for Oscamp Nott ing of Cincinnati. Funeral held Sunday at Pleasant Hill Church with burial at Green Lawn Cemetery Milford.

Summer round up for new school begins in Batavia
Parents are urged to attend the summer round up for children starting school in September at Batavia School House on May 28. Children receive a full physical exam with results to parents and the family physician. The event is supported by the National Congress of Parents and Teachers and is part of a nationwide effort. Local man to pay fine after liquor charges
John Galenstein of Wayne Township, formerly of Cincinnati, was arrested by Sheriff Roberts and Deputies Meinken and Kain on a Tuesday last week on nine liquor possession and manufacturing charges. At arraignment he pled guilty and was fined $400 and costs by Judge White. He had only been a county resident since March.

State Highway Dept Probing Davis Hill for Pile Driving
The State Highway Department is prospecting and sounding the Davis hill on the Batavia Hamlet road to see if there is a foundation for pile driving. If feasible work may begin soon as the slipping hill has caused much trouble and expense. Supt Ballinger and crew have worked long without success. piling could stop the slip. blasting the shale bed and drainage might help.

Woman Injured Spine in Court House Stairway Fall
Mrs. Howard Simpkins of Bata via, a grand jury witness in the Marshal Floyd Frayser murder case, fell on the courthouse stairs awaiting his call. She suffered a spinal injury, was treated by Dr. J. K. Ashburn, and faces a slow recovery with possible permanent disability. The incident may push county officials to redesign the courtroom stairs to prevent another accident.
