Batavia high school juniors Lehmann and Walker are named delegates to Boys State at Ohio University Athens June 10 to 18 sponsored by the American Legion. Both will also perform at the State Fair August 28 to September 6 with Lehmann in the All Boys State Band and Walker in the All Boys Stringed Ensemble.

Batavia School Board Plans May 20 Info Report

Kenneth Jones announced a Batavia Board of Education report for patrons to explain district operations. The publication, slated for May 20, will cover board duties, curriculum K-12, testing, facilities, transportation, cafeteria, administration, council and calendar and will recur annually.

Banks Pay Taxes For Depositors In Ohio 1964

In Ohio for 1964 banks paid most of the intangible property tax on deposits and capital. Clermont county banks paid 40378 for depositors and 5530 on capital. Total financial institutions tax was 35870522 with banks contributing 19855792. Commercial banks bore 17484613 on deposits. Banks absorbed the tax on stock shares of 2371179.

Board Adopts Pay Scale For Bus Drivers

The West Clermont board sets bus drivers pay at 2.57 dollars per hour from report to checkout and 1.28 dollars per hour for layover time. A one hour minimum pay applies if drivers are not notified to skip reporting due to weather. The board approved a recreation project at Amelia Elementary under the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio with three area churches to serve eastern Hamilton and western Clermont counties.

Batavia Wins District Meet at Trechter Stadium

Batavia scored 39 points to win the district track meet held at Trechter Stadium Friday night May 14. Madison totaled 31 points for second, Springboro 25 for third, with Batavia earning regional berths in multiple events including Dave Smith in sprints and Ogletree in field events.

Bethel Discount Center to Open at 220 Plane Street

Bethel welcomes The Bethel Discount Center opening Friday at 220 Plane Street. Owner Esther Greene has run a West Union discount store for three years and previously worked with Woolworth in Portsmouth. Her son Brady Green assists, running a Manchester discount store and a West Union shoe shop. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Moody's of Dayton Inc won the contract for a deep well for the PUB Water System with a bid of 20 439 dollars. Clermont County Commissioners, on the recommendation of Carl H Rush and Harlan Mace, awarded the project to the firm. Work to be finished within 90 calendar days of award.

Clermont County Loses Poverty Grant Hope

Clermont County’s request for a federal grant of 15 840 dollars to fund staffing for the war on poverty was denied. Tom McCartle of the Office of Economic Opportunity informed local leaders that Clermont will operate under the Greater Cincinnati Community Action Commission, with Jack Blumenthal directing full time from Cincinnati and paid by that commission.

Philip Levering, longtime Clermont County Public Library assistant librarian, accepts a new role in the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County film and recordings division. He will train at Library USA during six weeks at the New York World's Fair before reporting to Cincinnati. Clermont County Seeks Booster Pump Bid Reviews

County commissioners opened two bids Friday for a booster pump and referred both to Engineer Carl Rush and water manager Harlan Mace for study. Namesake of Locks and Dam Dedication Valued Cliff

Anthony Meldahl, Clermont Countian and noted river captain, born July 26 1855 in Parkersburg West Virginia died January 26 1923 in Cincinnati. He commanded vessels including Emma Graham Hudson Andes Katie Stockdale Ohio Queen City and Fashion and served as master and pilot of the Cayuga. He established Maple Lane Farm near Neville and Meldahl Landing marked river heritage.
