Last Friday the Batavia first four grades displayed work in weaving drawing design tracing wood work and more. Teachers receive praise for rapid mind development and plans for a modern high school building were discussed with Mr McCurdy and local speakers.
Memorial Day activities outline G A R parade formation with Batavia band Co K N G G A R and civic groups. Service at town hall includes songs readings Lincoln address and benediction. Procession to cemetery for graves to be decorated with committees named and a memorial sermon at M B church May 30. Citizens urged to attend.
Obituary note from Batavia dated May 17, 1915 honoring David Thomas who died May 12 1915 in Warner Ohio. Born 1841 in Lampeeter Wales he came to America with his parents in 1849. A Civil War veteran and captain of the 13th Ohio cavalry, he lived in Amelia and later Clermont County and left a wife Bertha Boye and five children Fritz Jane Walter Bertha and Dorothy.
The Branch Hill community dedicates the $17 000 school building on May 22 at 2 p.m. under the Junior order with music and an address by Hon. Eli Speidel of Batavia. A flag presentation by the Juniors and a Mothers Club meeting organized by Branch Hill ladies at 1 p.m. on the same day.
The Sunday school convention for Clermont County will be held in New Richmond on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 26, at the Methodist Church. The program includes devotions, addresses by Rev. J. Howard, Rev. T. J. Simpson, Mrs. Phebe Curtis, and Rev. T. L. Rynder, musical selections, and sections on Seeing Things and Hand, Heart.
The list records names of teachers who took the May exam and notes the next exam will be the last Friday in June. It lists recipients by certificate duration including three year, two year renewals, one year, and high school certificates with the names of each recipient.
The Sunshine Club met at Mrs. Naomi C. Harlow's home on May 6 with 17 ladies present. After opening with a rally song and roll call, a Mother’s Day reading, and several papers and songs followed, including a beauty on the farm and a paper on farm poultry management.
The Glen Este Woman's Club hosted an evening program on Saturday May 8 featuring a humorous play The Lonelyville Social Club performed by Anna Gallagher Ada Shimler Rose Ludlow Clara Townsley Fannie Gallagher Marie Burkhart Anna Townsley F A McGuire Mrs W R Krantz and Mrs S A Ludlow. Georgia L McGuire led a musical program with pupils Eunice L Krantz Ruth Baker Fay Spahr followed by Marie Smyth reading. Ice cream and cake were served to a large crowd and the event was a success.
The Histionic Society presented What Happened to Jones at Town Hall on Friday and Saturday nights to well filled houses. Proceeds go to the Chatauqua shortage fund. The two and a half hour farce drew large audiences with a superb Batavia orchestra and polished staging. Performers fit their parts and the society earned praise for organizing the public entertainment.
Clermont county committee of G A R posts met at the Batavia G A R hall on May 15 to arrange the next county encampment. Commander Major Sam West presided. The event is scheduled for Thursday August 26 at the Boston Fair Grounds with programs, grounds, music, and participant committees named.
Miss Elizabeth Marsh of Batavia Palmetto Rebecca Lodge No. 450 attended the Ohio Rebecca Assembly in Columbus May 12 and 13. An interesting session featured Mrs. Gertrude Osborne of Ashtabula as presiding officer. Officers installed for the coming year include President Jessie Perry Fayette, vice Anna McBride Cleveland, warden Anna J. Lambert West Jefferson, secretary Emma Bell, treasurer Margaret McGaveran.
Arrangements are complete for a class of forty candidates at Mt. Pisgah Modern Woodmen lodge next Thursday night. The Wilmington team will conduct the work in up-to-date style. Visitors from neighboring lodges are expected, and a banquet will follow. The order is expanding rapidly nationwide with strong social and protective branches.
Mrs Katherine Wolf widow of the former Elkt Lick area farmer died after a paralysis stroke suffered last week. Survived by son Oliver and five sons and two daughters among a large family. A member of the German U B church she lived a home body life. Funeral Friday afternoon with burial in Union cemetery.
Mrs. Kate Robinson of Batavia died at the Hall sisters home in Glen Este Friday night after a long sickness. A stroke four years ago left her unable to care for herself. She was 78 and a longtime Presbyterian member. Funeral was held at the church Sunday at 4 p.m. burial in Union Cemetery.
Robert Kellar of Cincinnati visited town Sunday morning under influence of bad whisky and was jailed by the marshal. Mayor Burnet set a fine of 10 dollars plus costs on Monday. In jail he fractured his ankle by kicking the iron bars, causing him pain. His family came after him on Monday.
The county spelling contest begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday May 26 to select representatives for the State contest in Columbus on June 4. The top ten finishers at Columbus will win prizes from 5 to 60 dollars.
Clermont Social lodge No. 29 F and A M Williamsburg Ohio marks its 100th founding with a Tuesday June 1 public centennial in the town park. Grand Master George R. Marshall of Dayton and other Grand Lodge officers will speak. Equipment includes a lodge opening at the usual meeting room and a park program with vocal and instrumental music. Families are invited to attend with baskets for a picnic style dinner. A commemorative roster and souvenir will be distributed.
Frank Walt and Miss Anna Mae Gallagher surprised friends by marrying in Covington Kentucky on May 8. The couple, accompanied by the bride’s sister, plan to reside in Norwood and receive best wishes from The Courier.
The Cromley bill requiring a name on the primary ballot to receive 12 percent of the total primary vote before appearing on the general election ballot moves toward the governor for signature. The change heightens petitioning and affects write in nominations, which currently place names on ballots unless withdrawn.
At a recent board meeting of Lebanon National Bank the directors declared an extra two percent dividend, bringing the total for the year to twelve percent. Many stockholders favor six or eight percent.
Frank Jones Sr. colored, longtime barber and river pilot, died last Thursday night after years of poor health. He was admired for his humor and courtesy and leaves several children. Funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Baptist church, interment in Union cemetery, with the colored Masons in charge of ceremonies.
Bethel citizens organized a thorough town cleanup and the G and P company offered to supply as many cars as needed to haul the refuse to a distant dump. The service aids sanitation following last winter's diphtheria and typhoid outbreaks.
The Manchester Signal notes the United States as the top tobacco producer exporter and consumer with annual leaf output around 1,000,000,000 pounds valued at about $100,000,000. It states exports exceed many major products and mentions a school pageant on the ground in June as a notable upcoming event.
Miss Marion L. Cross of Eagle township wins Brown county title by excelling in both oral and written tests, spelling flawlessly in 100 written tests. She will represent Brown county at the state spelling contest in Columbus.
The Clinton county commissioners will offer for sale on June 1, 300000 worth of 44g per cent bonds in 500 denominations. At the named rate of interest the revenue will be 18500 per year, but they are not likely to sell at the price as 6 and 6¢ bonds go begging now days.
Alpine Farm Woman's Club No 66 met at Mrs. Mary Cowderey's home on May 13 1915 with twelve members and several visitors. The program included songs readings and recitations led by Susie Snell Ruth Haulick Claude Chaney Mary Mattox Velma Varney and others followed by a talk from Mrs Keach and a Jessie DeWitt recitation and refreshments hosted by the hostess with assistants.
Woodland Park School closed on Friday April 23 with a districtwide picnic at noon. Families filled baskets and spread long tables in the park for a community dinner before gathering in the school room for a program. L. J. Meek, school board president, praised Mrs. Minnie P. Cast and the pupils voted thanks while presenting a flag for her three years of service. Patrons regret the teacher’s departure due to centralization and hope she finds work in the centralized system.
Batavia schools reveal notable upgrades with two new tennis courts, a better baseball diamond, and improved girls basketball goals. Arbor Day saw high school pupils clean the yard plant flowers and remove trees to reveal grass and aim for a beautified campus.
Milford plans a series of concerts starting on the first Thursday night in June. Citizens are urged to subscribe and contribute to cover expenses after last year’s shortfall. Batavia’s capable band asks for local support to ensure music continues this summer.
The Reeves family near Loveland has suffered three fires in three months. The home was destroyed, a temporary dwelling replaced it, a large barn burned, and the temporary residence burned last week leaving the farm without buildings. A fire marshal unit investigated and arrested a black employee, though no link to the fires was proven.
The Mt Crab property formerly run as a hotel and saloon was transferred from the D. D. Marsh estate to Anna P. Dietz and then sold last week to Lafayette 8. Vance for 1800. The site has housed a tenant house recently and the new owner plans to restore it to hotel use.
