Pool Men Meet in Ripley Over Burley Growers
Growers of the Burley Pool gathered in Ripley for one of the district’s largest meetings. A parade led by Georgetown school band preceded the gathering at the warehouse where Mr. Barker spoke about nine tenths of district tobacco being pool controlled and that unity would set the world price, with independents paying a higher price on a divided crop.

Dr. McCulloch and wife and the visiting delegation attended a hospitality dinner at Judge Nichols with a generous chicken feast and an angel food cake decorated with 74 candles for the pastor’s birthday May 9. The installation service followed at the church with remarks by Dr. Christie and charges from Dr. Walker and Dr. Austin.

Damage by Freezing Hits State Harvest Season
A severe freeze last Tuesday night caused extensive damage across the State. Fruit crops suffered, with strawberries and grapes hurt. tomatoes, beans, potatoes, and corn were leveled, while some growers with protected fields saved part of their truck. Recovery hopes persist as replanting may be needed.
Seniors Entertained at Batavia High School
Seniors were guests of the Juniors in Batavia High School auditorium for a pleasant evening of games and music. After activities, they enjoyed sandwiches, fruit salad, ice cream, cake, and coffee. Decor featured green and white class colors and several toasts added to the event. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Marlow, Mr. and Mrs. Brown, Byron Barbau, Miss McCall, and Miss Lockridge. The night concluded with a dance by the young folks.

Cross burnings signal Batavia Klan lodge formation
The Batavia area saw the first Klan cross on a hill behind P. O. Alexanders home Tuesday night last week, with a claimed 65 members. A 12 foot cross made of 2x4s illuminated the area for an hour. A cross was also burned at Mt. Carmel Thursday night indicating a second order.
