Beginning May 20 Batavia and Williamsburg townships launch a War Chest to fund war relief from June 1 1918 to June 1 1919. Subscribers may pay monthly quarterly or cash and will not be asked to contribute for a year. Letters and pledge cards will be sent. volunteers will solicit donations.
Clerks in the Clermont County Draft Board compile data on registrants married since May 18 1917 and send it to the District Board in Cincinnati. The board will decide whether these men should be placed in Class 1A and called to service. About 75 registrants fall under this, potentially affecting local troop availability as Class A cannot meet May demand.
Miss Leona Heizer and Mr B M Stubblefield wed at the bride’s parental home in Williamsburg on Sunday. Heizer is a Eureka College and College of Music graduate teaching in Batavia schools. Stubblefield, a University of Illinois graduate, works as a chemist in Youngstown Ohio. They plan to live in Youngstown. A Fordson tractor demonstration by Henry Ford & Son will be held in Dayton at Rolla DeWeese’s farm Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 PM the public is invited.
The county offers about 300 bushels of high testing seed corn and can refer buyers to cribs while reserving seed for local needs. A purchasing board may be appointed for horses and mules for the U S Army, with printed specifications available at the office. County Agent Monday office day and recent farm demonstrations include canning cold pack methods and wild garlic spraying near New Richmond.
Granville Herbert Kain died Monday morning at his home after months of illness. A life long resident, he was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Presbyterian church and left a widow and two brothers Will and Frank. Funeral Thursday at 2:30 from the residence, Rev Tilford officiating. Burial in Union cemetery.
The Clermont County Sunday School Association holds its annual county convention at the Presbyterian church in Williamsburg on Friday May 24 and Saturday May 26.
The will of the late Mrs Lena Penn Spargur Patterson of Hillsboro filed for probate announces bequests of 5000 to Miss Jennie Penn and Mrs Anna Walker 2600 to Miss Marguerite Ashburn 5000 to Mary La Guidaria and 15000 to her husband Dr B B Patterson who is named residuary legatee. Jewelry and personal effects are distributed among many relatives and friends per a memorandum. The husband may contest the will or elect to take under the law. a large estate suggests a likely legal battle.
Church services next Sunday morning will feature Red Cross sermons organized by county ministers. Lay speakers will present four minute Red Cross talks in Sunday school and again in the main church service, urging patriotic attendance.
Batavia High School presents Claim Allowed tonight at the town hall with cast listing Mr. LaFohl Robert Jamieson Mrs. LaFohl Dabney LaFohl and others. Also Red Cross Drive meetings planned Sunday across Clermont county with multiple speakers and venues including Batavia Williamsburg Bethel New Richmond Moscow and Amelia among others.
Miss Julia Mae Elstun and Mr. Nicholas Kain wed at the Elstun home in Williamsburg in a quiet ceremony conducted by Rev. Smith. Attendants were Miss Florence Meyer and Alvin Elstun with ring bearer Marjoria Hedrick. music by Frances McNutt. Numerous relatives and friends attended, and many presents were exchanged.
Prices for farm commodities moved higher this month compared with a year ago. Hay rose about ten dollars per ton, potatoes in May 1917 traded at 8.40 per bushel but are now 0.87. Oats gained 27 cents, corn moved to 1.54 from 1.66, and pork or eats rose from 0.74 to 0.97.
The Batavia I O O F lodge invites members from across the county to a gathering a week from Friday night with the Grand Master present. One degree will be performed and questions answered as Odd Fellowship spirit is revived. Mrs. Anna Tatman and Miss Alice Gilmore visit Georgetown Kentucky relatives.
Clermont county joins national effort to raise one hundred million dollars for the Red Cross during the week of May 20. Every household is asked to contribute. township quotas are set with 25 percent of each unit returned locally for supplies. The campaign encourages visible support, including automobile insignia, and urges residents to rally behind soldiers and allied forces.
Decoration Day is near with May 30 cited as the observance day. The question asks if the local committees appointed last year have met to plan, arrange speakers and music, and confirms readiness to print the program.
A suggestion urges a Red Cross sale on Saturday May 26 to donate a percent of proceeds to Red Cross Funds. The idea asks local families to donate items such as clothing furniture vegetables or other usable goods to support those in need. Other towns report success with similar sales.
All nominees must file nomination papers 60 days before the August 13 primary and deposit a fee equal to half a percent of the salary of the office sought. Fees range from 9 to 12 dollars for various offices, with amounts listed for Clerk of Courts, Sheriff, Recorder, County Commissioner, and Representative. The deposits fund election expenses, so more candidates lower per-candidate costs.
P F Jamieson of Clermont county names Fred Edgington of Chile as chairman of the Fuel Wood Division of the U S Fuel Administration. He will organize a county committee to secure a wood fuel supply to relieve the coming winter shortage.
The Courier runs three pages of advertisements promoting a county Red Cross Drive starting on the 20th. Businessmen back the effort and solicit public support with strong appeals. Contributors are listed and even 80 cents are welcomed by solicitors.
Churches unite at town hall for war drive kickoff with Cincinnati speakers. M E church led by Rev R B Wilson hosts 10 30 sermon True and Lasting Happiness. Presbyterian Rev Tilford reports Parents Day praise. Christian Endeavor 645. Out of town Laymen speakers next Sunday Allen Nichols and Judge Frank Davis. ADMIRER OF CHARLIE D Lyon a Brown county farmer was in Batavia Friday seeking seed corn after hearing a car load would arrive there for distribution but none showed up. He praises Hon OC learns and speaks of Charlie's success in Brown county this fall and district. Democrats rally for Mr K and many think he should be returned for a third term. He is reaching a point where he can be of use to the people.
A patriotic meeting is planned at Monterey Christian church next Sunday afternoon with Dr. H. M. Brown of Hillsboro as speaker. The gathering at 1:30 PM invites all to attend and brings a cordial invitation to bring friends. Sunday Enquirers will be present as well.
Six Clermont county boys will report for service at the Ohio Mechanical Institute in Cincinnati on May 16 under Call 202. Named are Earl J. Fitzwater, Neil Ashton Buckley, N. Richmond, Ralph R. Dockum, Bryan McBeth Iiliff, Arthur Jos. Beeler, Leo Edgar Stewart, Harry Williams, a Goshen lineman, who will report in Washington D C.
The Marathon event Friday evening featured a talented group of young performers. Alice Hutchinson won the silver medal, with Marie Christy earning second honors. Other contestants included Martha Isabel Leeds, Mary DeBoard, and Thelma Snell as the Marathon orchestra provided music to complete the evening.
Rev. Murry Titus and wife, missionaries to India, on vacation, met many friends at Mrs. Jennie Titus's home Sunday afternoon. The visit featured conversation, song, and explanations of costumes, and the couple was praised as entertaining and devoted to their work.
A reception in the school auditorium Tuesday evening, hosted by the Mothers' club and teachers, honored Supt. Hamilton who leaves Thursday morning to enter the service. He has been a popular teacher and will be greatly missed by all.
Mothers Day was observed last Sunday in churches of all denominations. The white flower was in great demand as the symbol worn on the occasion. Services were well attended with sermons honoring "mother" and appropriate music provided by church orchestras for the celebration.
Thousands of plants have been set as the season offers ideal conditions. Tomatoes cabbage ball flower and egg plant are being put out to double previous seasons. Sweet potato plants arrive, some used, prices range 20 to 80 cents per 100. More potatoes beans and sugar corn to be planted for next winter.
Citizens of Felicity and Clermont county rally for a loose leaf tobacco warehouse to be built near the railroad, asserting it will aid the county and prove profitable.
Supt N B Heidlebaugh of the Central District was re employed for three years at 1800 dollars per year in a special board session at Batavia. He is a popular instructor trusted by patrons and teachers and is kept abreast of current methods.
The Batavia I O O F lodge room was busy Friday evening as Burton Hodges of Marathon lodge received the first degree. About 80 visiting members from Marathon and Owensville attended. After the work, lunch was served and visitors offered several good talks.
