Red Cross drives in Clermont County drew large crowds at Sunday meetings in churches and halls. Patrons pledged substantial sums, payable in cash or installments, to meet district targets while speakers and music energized the patriotic sessions.
The Batavia high school commencement will be held at the town hall on Friday night May 31 to close the term. Baccalaureate sermon at M E church next Sunday evening by Rev Wilson. New Richmond public schools close May 24. Milford high school commencement exercises run May 22 26 and 29 with a senior class play May 22 and baccalaureate May 26 at Family Theater.
A prized hen with brood was donated by Mrs W W Frank to raise money for the local war chest in Williamsburg Clermont County. Solicitors sold chances at 10 cents each in stores and the plan has raised about $50 so far with the fundraiser continuing.
Food Administrator Hoover instructed state officials to require wholesalers to drop prices for wheat flour substitutes by 10 to 20 percent. Corn meal and oatmeal are to be 20 percent cheaper than wheat flour while corn flour and barley rise 10 percent below wheat flour.
Sunday marks the closing day of the financial campaign to pay off church indebtedness. A special appeal asks members and friends of other churches to help reach the goal. Reports from nearly all townships show strong patriotism as Clermont County seeks a ten thousand dollar share of the Second War Fund for the Red Cross. The drive, half finished, urges every resident to contribute to aid wounded soldiers and suffering civilians in France and Belgium.
The fifty second annual convention meets Friday and Saturday at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Program includes prayers, addresses by Rev. T. F. Smith Rev. R. F. Edwards Rev. J. W. Belcher Rev. R. State Supervisor of Elections W D Fulton warns candidates to file papers by June 18 to meet the 60 day preregistration rule for the August 13 primary. Some claim June 14 is legal, but officials urge filing on the 18th for certainty.

The Ohio State Fair adopts War Activity status with increased swine premiums totaling 6148.50 to stimulate fat production and new prizes for City War Garden exhibits. Secretary Shaw says the premium list will be ready by June 1, inviting Ohio breeders to request a copy as the national exhibit combines Agriculture War Navy Interior Commerce and Public Information efforts.

Each man is identified by hometown and sometimes middle initials or full names. Alternates and additional listed names appear throughout.

The senior class play Claim Allowed will return to Batavia town hall on Thursday May 23 for Red Cross fund proceeds. A full house attended the first show last week with many unable to get tickets. Specialties by Phylis Scott Ada Roudebush and Don Wilson join the Batavia Concert Band music as the encore. A prior performance in Amelia drew a fine audience for the Amela Red Cross fund.
The Batavia high school Senior class presented Claim Allowed at the town hall on Friday to a large paid crowd. The Cast impressed with high standards and the Batavia Concert Band provided music. Management by M. J. Kain with assistance from Miss Wilma Brown. Receipts totaled $109.
Hon C C Kearns will address Bethel at the K P Hall Thursday night on the Great World War. He appears this week for a free, profitable talk with music and a large audience expected. Meeting opens at 7 30 with admission free.
A Clermont County bulletin outlines preliminary plans for registering men who turned 21 since June 5 1916. About 190 expected to join Class 1A, based on rising 21st birthdays from the previous decade. Registration date pending presidential proclamation. Batavia office likely site with possible new registration posts.
County assessors in Adams County are busy reappraising real and personal property as values rise. Clermont County plans no appraisal this year though duplicate assessments may rise if valued for taxation at selling price or asking price.
The strawberry season started early this year due to mild March weather. Last week berries ranged at 20 cents per quart in the market. Some gardeners had early picks ready by Thursday. The berries are reported to be large and flavorful with prospects of a substantial crop.
The Grand Master will be at the Batavia I O O F lodge next Friday night with lodges from the county invited to attend. The Bethel and Batavia teams will confer the second and third degrees. Arrangements are underway to entertain a large crowd.
The government announced air mail routes last week among Washington, Philadelphia, and New York as an experimental service for possible expansion. Postage by air is set at 26 cents per ounce. The note asks who will be the first to own an airplane in Batavia or Clermont county.
In a Pensacola naval base letter dated April 30 1918 William Nash writes home after passing a second rating exam with 92 percent. He recalls a clash with a German shooting gallery owner who is forced to buy ten thousand dollars in Liberty Bonds and notes eight to five German spies at the brig. He describes a nine mile relay race and a big parade with sailors soldiers and veterans groups. He also mentions a Skyward flight to Birmingham Alabama at 18000 feet and says he enjoys the hometown newspapers Sun and Courier. The Woodward farm near Milford Kentucky sold for 820 acres for 82000 to 85000 dollars to Dr. T D Goodman and brother.
