Slot Machines Smashed in County Raid Arraignment Held
Judge Charles G White of the Common Pleas Court held arraignments for slot machine owners and operators Monday with pleas of guilty from Nile Hays Harry Ely Wm Allen Roy Bailey Jack Gagan and J J Johnson not guilty bond set at 1500. Those pleading guilty were fined jailed 90 days suspended no gambling devices for a year. Deputy sheriffs destroyed machines totaling 1172 46 with proceeds to the County Treasury. Grand jury investigated 180 cases across 50 witnesses over 3 days.

Last Civil War Veteran Dies in Batavia at 94
William Hewitt aged 94, the last Civil War veteran to die in Batavia, passed away Sunday after a long illness. He left a son Tom and two brothers Charles of Milford and John of Mt Crab as survivors. A former farmer, Hewitt moved from Pennsylvania and joined Company I, 122nd Infantry, discharged July 11, 1864 after a strong battle record. Burial in Williamsburg is planned for Tuesday.

Medical Examination Date Change For Batavia Pre School Pupils
