R J E Sentman rites held in Williamsburg Ohio

Rev J E H Sentman 95 of Williamsburg Ohio died May 4 at his son Carl’s home on Gay Street. A Civil War veteran and longtime minister, he served in multiple Ohio towns and was the eldest living alumnus of Drew Theological Seminary. He married Sarah Parcell in 1878 and leaves five children, eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were at First Presbyterian Church with Masonic rites at Maham Funeral Home.

Miss Margaret Givens of Portsmouth chaired a Southeast District meeting of the Junior Woman's Club Federation of Ohio at Miss Sue Speidel's home on Friday night to discuss the federation's purpose and aims.

Grange Hosts Goshen Members In County Gathering

The Batavia Grange hosted Goshen Grange with 98 members and visitors in attendance. After regular business, guests enjoyed a program and lunch of coffee, pie, and sandwiches served by local ladies. Twenty-two new members were enrolled as granges across the county continue to grow.

Farewell Party For Smysers Before Florida Move

The Belfast Sunday School Adult Bible Class hosted a farewell at Mr and Mrs S G Suttons for Mr and Mrs Warden Smyser and daughter Freda who sold their farm and plan retirement in Gainesville Florida near their son. About fifty guests played games chatted and enjoyed ice cream crushed strawberries and cake as they wished the family a safe journey and happy new life in the South.

The county gains a 47 percent share of 28570.50 for road use, adding to a 25 percent distribution to Clermont and subdivisions. Total receipts from motor vehicle registrations now reach 36198.00.

Batavia Names Clarence Zimmerman Deputy Sheriff

Clarence Zimmerman, a colored man, is appointed deputy sheriff by Sheriff Auxier without pay and serves as Batavia’s merchant policeman. He works from 11 pm to 6 am, paid by merchants at $1 monthly and the village council at $10 monthly, following recent robberies in the town and surrounding area.

Pownall Held Sane Trial Set For May Twenty Two

George L. Pownall New Richmond inventor indicted for second degree murder in the March 5 death of house keeper Bertha Mae King was deemed sane in Common Pleas Court. Judge Charles G. White heard testimony from Dr. Herman Turk that staff found no insanity and the defense entered a plea of not guilty by temporary insanity. Trial scheduled for May 22.

Arbor Day Observed at Batavia High School

About 600 pupils and teachers gathered at Batavia High School for Arbor Day events Friday evening. The ceremony included a maple sapling planting by school custodians, performances of The Star Spangled Banner and America by the band, and readings of poems Salute to the Trees and Trees with brief remarks by Gerald Rockwell.

Chile Man Charged With Assault In Bethel Fracas

William Prather a 24 year old Higginsport farmer was charged with assault after allegedly striking Berlin Cox a 28 year old Chile man with a wrench outside a Bethel theatre Cox received a head gash and was treated by Dr O C Davison Cox later swore out a warrant Prather was arrested Thursday before Justice Ralph Parker and bound over to the Grand Jury in 500 bond with Philip Schadle Felicity posting the bond and Prather released pending the next Grand Jury session.

Cradle Roll Day At Summerside Methodist Church

Three Clermont county youths were seriously injured when their car sideswiped another, struck a concrete culvert, and crashed through an iron fence near Mt Washington Ohio. Dial Telephones Demonstration Planned at School Auditorium

A Cincinnati Bell Telephone representative will visit Batavia May 16 at 2 30 P M to present an illustrated demonstration of the Dial telephone system and how to use it. Clermont Scholarship Team Wins District State Awards

Fifteen of thirty eight Clermont county high school students who traveled to Miami University for the District State Scholarship examinations earned prizes and an Honorable Mention. Four Cincinnati youths linked to Clermont county burglaries

Walter Ballard 20 Larry Stevens 21 Fred Anderson 20 and Thomas McGarry 23 all of Cincinnati were arrested by Hamilton County police on Thursday and Friday and confessed to three Clermont county burglaries and two in Lebanon Warren county. They also admitted stealing Harry Alberts car and used a pawn shop trail led to the loot.
