Moment of truth on subdivision rules in Clermont County

An editorial by A. E. Sure of the Clermont County Whaning Commission argues subdivision neglect has left Clermont County with unsafe streets, poor playgrounds, and excessive road and bridge maintenance costs. It cites 4311 subdivided lots in Union and Batavia townships and estimates $25.9 million needed for gutters sewers and road improvements to correct past mistakes.

Drownings Reported Near Milford and Felicity

The Little Miami River near Newtown and Bullskin Creek along Felicity Cedron Rd claim three drownings. Brothers Roland Weiskittal and John Hiryok identified as Jesuit novices from Ohio. Residents Push Widening Of Frank Willis Memorial Road

Residents along Frank Willis Memorial Road in Ohio and Monroe townships petitioned county commissioners Friday to widen the narrow road and correct a dangerous curve at Rt. 52. Commissioners authorized County Engineer Carl H Rush to estimate costs and widen and grade 1,000 feet north from Rt. 52, and to survey an easement on Rt. 222 near the county home for the state highway department. Plans aim to straighten two curves to improve sight distance. Rush reported inspecting Neville Penn Schoolhouses Road and Fruit Ridge Road after a Nike base bus incident and noted large potholes. Commission approved patching from Rt. 756 to the missile base.

Bonds Put Up For Batavia Court House Upgrades

Clermont County commissioners signed one hundred thousand dollars in bonds last Friday to finance additions and alterations to the Batavia courthouse. The $1,000 denomination bonds were bought by Fields Richards and Company of Cincinnati at four percent interest.

Judgment Upheld In Damage Suit Against County

Ohio Supreme Court affirms Clermont County verdicts awarding damages to Mrs. Lorene Sizemore and her family after a car struck a hole on Mt Carmel Tabasco Rd in November 1957. Lorene awarded 1500 for personal injuries, son Hubert 500, husband Hershel 1000 for auto damage.

Ford Honors Two For Civic Service

Ford Motor Company in Cincinnati recognizes two Clermont County employees at the first Community Service Awards. Walter Haglage of Batavia and Charles L. Hook of Bethel received engraved commendations from Henry Ford II. Hook is Bethel mayor. Haglage has long served on Batavia’s village council.

The Clermont County Knot Hole Leagues will meet at 8 p.m. April 7 at the Batavia courthouse. Stanley Anstaet says this deadline day requires teams to post forfeit and prize money and to submit team name, manager name, and manager contact details.

Census Opens in Clermont County April 1

The 1960 census begins Friday April 1 with enumerators visiting every dwelling in Clermont County. District Supervisor Don E Fuller notes advance report forms speed the process. households are asked to file the ten questions, while a 25 percent sample answers extra items. Census staff promise strict confidentiality under federal law and that data are used only for aggregate statistics.

Two Men Charged With Larceny

Floyd Hammonds 22 and cousin Donald Ray Hammonds 26 were charged with grand larceny of contractor material valued at 100 dollars. Sheriff Clyde B. Dericks said the items belonging to Ralph McSwain a Springdale hardwood floor contractor were found at Floyd Hammonds home following police investigation by Deputy Glenn Ankrom.

Counties and Residents Agree on Holland Drive Repair

Miami township residents and Clermont County VFW members pressed for road and bridge repairs. Holland Drive will be added to the county system and fixed to 1955 standards after 13 families contribute 1300 toward a 2600 estimate. The historical society urged preservation of Jackson Pike and Stonelick-Williams Corner covered bridges.

Woman Wins Prize For State Fair Senior Poster

Miss Maud Horn of Batavia earned honorable mention and $5 for a poster promoting the Senior Citizens Arts and Crafts Show at the Ohio State Fair. The contest urged participation by Ohioans over 60 as state events highlight big harness races and top purses, with Frank Murphy entering Gypsy Byrd and Peppy Volo in major colt races.

Clermont seniors named as candidates for agents scholarship

Eighteen Clermont County seniors were named by school superintendents as candidates for the 500 scholarship from the Clermont County Association of Insurance Agents. The finalists include Claude Cates Connee Johnson Amelia Larry Walker Ralph Alexander Fred Foley Jerry England Bobby Kay Marriott Char lene Hines James Hatter Jeanete Skinkle Virginia Conley Sandra Fletcher Tammy McFarland Carol Francis Joyce Grether and more. The scholarship committee will interview all candidates and select the awardee. The grant assists tuition books and living costs at an accredited college or university with 250 dollars paid on Sept 1 1960 and 250 on Jan 1 1961.
