Lowell Roudebush writes that war with Germany is imminent and urges Clermont county to form public safety committees to root out alleged traitors. He calls for naturalized Germans to pledge allegiance or be punished, reserves internment, and non naturalized residents to take loyalty oaths.
The regular Guest Day at Country Club No 60 planned at Mrs John Fosters home is postponed. Members express sympathy for sister member Leona Foster Walker who recently lost her daughter. The April meeting under Mrs DeWitt featured Irish wit, papers by Mrs Keach Parliament rules readings by Mrs Alva Brown and Mrs Hibbs, current events, and a closing ode, adjourned to meet April 26 with Mrs Ida Davidson.

Probate Judge Young announces the March April May division of mothers pension funds based on number of children. Patriots services planned for the M. E. church were held in the town hall due to a furnace outage. Rev. Martin preached a strong sermon with fine music from the school children. A large crowd attended the evening service and the hall was decorated with Old Glory. It is hoped the church will be usable next Sunday.
Milford council approved a contract with Co. M. & L. Co. to supply electric light for town use and manufacturing at 10 cents per kilowatt with a $1 minimum. The street improvement project went to Laub & Jordan for $5,580.40. Frank Meek of Newtonsville was named inspector. an emergency measure to borrow $2,000 at 5 percent was approved.
For best lime effect in corn, work lime into the soil during seed bed prep. Do not place lime on surface then plow. Avoid caustic lime with manure or fertilizers. Plow manure under and top dress lime later. A bulletin on soil liming is available from the Agricultural College Extension Service, Columbus, Ohio.
An inspector from the State Liquor License Commission orders the discontinuance of cider sales in pool rooms restaurants and some groceries without a license. The note warns heed the state order and mentions The Double Reward, a Western at the Comet Saturday night.
Owensville Grange enjoyed a Saturday afternoon program celebrating Ohio Day. Highlights included recitations, Ohio history by Dr. W. E. Leever, a toast by J. E. Christy, and a “Garden of Eden” trio. The event featured a paper by Mrs. Monyhon, a corn growing talk by Jas. Patchell, and a humorous surprise by Mrs. A. C. Iuen and assistants. Decorations with flags and bunting reflected patriotism as Old Grey waved. The next meeting on April 14 plans a play The Cow that Kicked Chicago, with cast including J. E. Christy W. J. Snider W. E. Varney Anna Marsh Annie Taylor Miss Hebron.
William A Eylar editor of the People's Defender of Georgetown was appointed by Governor Cox as state supervisor of printing. The Senate will confirm. Eylar will assume duties in a few days after resignation from the News-Democrat. The move pleases state Democratic leaders and Eylar's friends in Adams and Brown counties.
Mr Jenkinson, state examiner, holds sessions in the auditor's office rear room where township clerks and treasurers bring books and vouchers to be passed upon. Irregularities are corrected to set accounts on the right track. The process lasts two weeks or more. An examiner for villages and county follows. These men are said to receive ten dollars per day for their services, appointed by the state.
Laurel lodge No. 417 Knights of Pythias Milford marks its 27th anniversary at the Odd Fellow’s hall on April 1 with a prepared program. Past Grand Chancellor Wm Schuchardt of Cincinnati will speak. Committee on arrangements includes H. Gatch C G Sederberg S Rosenzweig and Frank L Coler.
The Ladies Aid Society of Monterey Presbyterian arranged an all day meeting on the 22nd at Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Cover home to celebrate their marriage anniversary and surprise Mr. Cover. Forty guests attended bringing contributions for a fine dinner despite the cost of living.
Clermont county commissioners study road building and repair for three districts with each commissioner overseeing territory and summer work. Funding remains unresolved with taxation or borrowing options. Some duties already allocated in Franklin and Tate townships. full schedule to be announced.
Mrs. L. M. Spencer, ex probation officer, builds a stone and concrete cyclone shelter with iron beams and storm proof doors. She says the open structure protects against high winds and floods, asserting safety once inside.
Last Sunday near Union Chapel the home of William Wittekind burned completely while the family ate dinner, with part of the household goods lost. The residence was insured by Ohio Farmers Insurance Co. Settlement is under adjustment. Nearby, Lajor Hafler lost his house and contents on Monday morning after purchasing the Old Atchley farm near Greenbriar, with partial insurance.
The H. A. S. girls present The Feast of the Red Corn an operetta in Milford town hall Friday evening April 18. Ruth Hill returns as leading lady with Mrs Elmer Kress and Mrs Max Baker in supporting roles along with Milford orchestra providing music.
The room previously occupied by the German American Bank in the Clermont Hotel building has been vacated and repurposed as the hotel office. This creates a new parlor and updates the premises.
Mrs. L. L. Johnson hosted Batavia Woman’s Club guests with music by Miss Louise Hicks and Donald Jamieson. Mrs. W. W. Keen read Riley’s The Beautiful City, and Mrs. Clara Titus sent an original poem. A farce, A quiet Evening at Home, featured Pratt Plum and Richard Phelps among others.
The Batavia C C F team visited Owensville lodge last Saturday night and conferred the initiatory degree on seven candidates in front of many visiting brothers. Talks followed, social time, and lunch. They plan to visit Chile lodge on April 14 to initiate 10 candidates at 8 p.m. totaling 15 members welcomed since January 1 with another class in April at Owensville.
Last week John Hahn bought Kate Hulick’s cottage and Wal lace Carroll bought Homer Kain’s Broadway property. Homer Kain bought Chas. Slade’s Main street lot, Slade purchased Mrs Gomien’s Water street parcel, James Lewis begins a six room house in Kline Heights, and J B Wasner reportedly contracts for a modern home nearby. Spring is here and the building drive continues.
The County Agent offers a demonstration of a garlic eradication method for farms infested with wild garlic. Equipment and spraying material are needed, with costs justified by promising results in Indiana and Ohio. The program requires 75 gallons of orchard heating oil per acre and a good spray machine.

William Plank Sr a Civil War veteran aged 78 committed suicide at home after a period of poor health and a paralysis stroke last fall. He was found by his son after breakfast and died despite neighbors' aid. Survived by one son and one daughter. Funeral Sunday at Old Bethel.

The Ripley Bee reports Company M of the 1st N G needs forty new men as enlistments lag. A new law offers one dollar per drill or two for a year to enlisted members to spur joining. Recruits urged by Lieut Ris and local leaders. Company K in Batavia also seeks one officer and full quota soon.
In Columbus county auditors are called to confer on the new state law listing personal and real property. The State Tax Commission will instruct on real estate appraisal though no real estate reappraisal will occur this year. focus centers on personal property listing and the effort to file accurate returns.
Attorney General McGee rules abutting property owners cannot be relieved of any part of the 10 per cent cost for constructing intercounty and main market roads. The opinion was issued at the request of Prosecuting Attorney Roy R. Carpenter of Steubenville.
