Auditor Searls says blank tax lists will not be mailed this spring and lists must be filed by May 1 to avoid forfeiting a $100 exemption. Notaries must witness oaths, envelopes and blanks available countywide, and every family member owning property must file. False listings carry heavy penalties as county treasuries rely on all taxable property.
Thomas Bay born November 15 1831 died March 28 1917 of general debility after a stroke on March 9 aged 85 years 4 months 13 days He married Julia E Smith December 27 1854 six children Alice Ida Etha Charles Rose Emma survive with wife and three daughters deceased He died at daughter Emma B Varoum’s home in Amelia Ohio after 18 months of illness with care from her and at the home six months prior.
Catherine Rhodes born June 17 1886 Batavia Ohio died March 14 1917 at her Denver Colorado home. She was daughter of George and Caroline Lair pioneer Clermont County residents. She married John G Rhodes and had five children May Storey Genevieve Belle Dwight and John Rhodes. After living in Georgetown Ohio the family moved to Denver where she remained until death. She is remembered for devotion to family and sacrificial service during long illness cared for by daughters May and Genevieve.
John Young, recently recovering from a stroke, fell into a water hole caused by heavy rains and broke the arm that had left him helpless. Miss Hita Tate, a spechelle of Mr. Young, endured a rough winter with pain, while Daniel Tate and Miss (unreadable) of Milford were married Monday at the parsonage by Rev. (unreadable).
Rev. E. F. Wegner, pastor of the German United Brethren church in Batavia, asserts twenty years of American civic and church work proving loyalty "America first." He condemns slander as a threat to peace and calls for exposure of those behind the rumors.
Law mandates all dog owners to apply with the county auditor for a dog registration license after January 1, 1918. Fees are $1 for males and $2 for females. Violations bring fines up to $25 for failure to apply and $100 for using another dog’s license. Sheriffs and deputies will enforce, with the harborer of a dog deemed the owner and liable for the tax.
The Ohio Experiment Station advises early potatoes and field peas as strong precedents to alfalfa, noting potatoes can be harvested by late July or early August seedings and that midsummer alfalfa seeding reduces weed competition. It warns failures stem from weed pressure and nurse crops shading or draining moisture and nutrients.
The Ohio Experiment Station reports tile drainage boosts yields on poorly drained soils. At Clermont County farm, land with drainage and complete fertilizer produced 21.7 more bushels of corn per acre in 1916 than undrained, fertilized plots. Manured, tile drained fields added 84.4 bushels per acre. fertilized wheat with drainage gained 6.7 bushels per acre over undrained, similarly treated land.
The State of Ohio orders 60,000 men in the call to arms and assigns Clermont county a quota of 860 soldiers. The text notes the quota could be easily raised within the county.
The C G and P railroad plans daylight service to Batavia by September. Workers string current wires and wait for transformers to arrive for West Batavia lines. A dynamo will power Batavia from a new depot beside the old site, with a moved depot serving freight and a sidewalk entrance for passengers.
The Board adopts a Relief and Pension department with a funded relief plan and death benefits. The company covers administration costs and any shortfalls, offers retirement with pension at 70 or earlier under specific conditions, and sets a pension at 1 percent of ten year average salary per year of service, minimum 20 dollars monthly. Start date proposed as July 1, 1917.
The East Fork Progressive Club met at Mrs. Hattie Glancy’s home on March 24 for guest day. Families joined in, with quotations from Poor Richard's Almanac, music by Minnie Hutchinson and Goldie Hutchinson, papers on The Emerald Isle and Useful Inventions, a recital by Mrs. Irene Harbaugh, and a president’s contest with prizes. Irish jokes, refreshments, and social hour concluded the evening.
Citizens are urged to enlist in a regiment being organized from Clermont and adjoining counties. Those interested may contact Homer B. Glancy in Batavia, Ohio, to join the patriotic effort and defend democratic principles with deeds.
The M E church appeals for funds to pay the $2440 debt plus interest from the Breeding property purchase for a parsonage. A committee formed January 4 at the Second Quarterly Conference asks every member and church friend to contribute any amount to support the pastor and family in this town.
Citizens circulate a petition to add cement sidewalks with shared cost between property owners and town. A new garage by A. E. Price the Ford agent is planned, and possible water main extensions along with lighting on West Water Street are discussed as a part of the tax-duplicate impact.
County Agent Stowe visits the farm of F. W. Walker near Williamsburg and helps plan a young orchard. He offers his services upon request, and consults with State officials for questions beyond his knowledge to provide guidance to the requester.
Messrs David F Reid and H B Leyman presidents of Chicago and Cincinnati Speedways in Cincinnati decide no action on Decoration day races until after Congress meets. If Government needs racing drivers for aviation schools or fields or the Speedway property for any purpose the management will support enrollment of drivers and mechanics for service.
The district State boiler inspector visited Batavia Sunday morning and inspected West Batavia steam powered plants. He found boilers in passable condition and required engineers to clean their boilers for readiness. No condemnations were issued.
New Richmond plans a six day chautauqua from August 29 to September 8 with school grounds offered by the Board of Education. Lincoln County is expected to provide talent while Batavia dates will be announced later.

Fine spring weather on Saturday brings many autos from winter storage. Streets fill with vehicles while walking becomes uncommon, though a few still go on foot.
The Board of Public Affairs reported no bids for the year's coal supply for the Batavia Power House due to dealers not accepting terms from mine operators. A new meeting is set for next Friday night to reconsider the matter.
The case before the common pleas court on Wednesday titled F. W. Walker versus Delmer Waits concerns a $410 claim in the sale of a jack Walker says is worthless. A number of witnesses testified over about three days, the jury disagreed after hours of deliberation, and the winner is unlikely to gain financially.
Reverend D K E McKinney succeeds Rev R W Owens as Milford Presbyterian pastor and delivered his first sermon last Sunday. He plans to continue the work laid out by his predecessor and oversee church programs. Also note two western films The Prospector and The Mohawks Treasure showing at the Comet on Friday evening.
Batavia residents celebrate electric current prospects as Batavia Light and Power Co plans a new building replacing the C G P station. The board offers unsold stock at 10 per share in four installments with a limit of two shares per person until April 17 1917.
W P Richards of Bethel marked forty years in business last week. Friends visited his Bethel establishment to extend congratulations. He is well known across the county and friends wish him continued success in his chosen trade.
Our fellow townsman Lee Norris has been with relatives in Kentucky for months, is now in Georgia for health care, and plans a brief stay in Florida before returning home.
Felicity residents now enjoy 48 electric street lights of 100 watt capacity providing bright nightly illumination. The town reports a marked improvement over the old system and touts being up to date.
The Clermont county Modern Woodmen hold a session at Miamiville to select delegates and alternates for the State convention in Columbus on May 2. A Clermont County delegate is expected to attend the National convention in Chicago in June.
The Batavia Woman's Club will meet with Mrs. V. O. Lytle on Saturday April 7. The program includes Pan America responses South America the Pan American Union with Mrs. Scott and music by Mrs. H. L. Nichols. The Home of the Pan American Union and The Land of Opportunity will be discussed by Mrs. Bishop.
Fire alarm rang Thursday morning at Johnson Marble Works when a spark among shingles started the fire. Paul Coyle extinguished flames before water could be applied. Loss reported as small. Two chapters of the Lion Crew and one of the Gripef Evil at the Comet.
