On March 5 1917 at the home of Mr and Mrs W D Simmons of Laurel friends gathered for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. A sumptuous dinner and decorated venue marked the day with letters from distant friends. The bride received a gold token of esteem and the gathering closed with singing and conversation.
The Second District Court of Appeals in Columbus affirmed the lower court ruling upholding Dayton’s Home Rule Charter. The court denied Ira O. Koehne’s bid to enjoin the city from damming the Miami River, ruled the river not navigable, and found the Charter constitutionally adopted. The suit involved $39,000.
The Batavia Light and Power Co organized last week with officers including President P. F. Jamieson and Vice President G. Wilke. A meeting will be called to appoint a committee to buy machinery, with unsold stock available at the bank. Policymakers warn that if citizens do not subscribe, the share limit will be raised and day current is planned.
Rev. John P. Martin of the Bata via M E church offered his services to the President as a chaplain for any regiment in case of war. The offer was channeled through Congressman Kearns and sent to Washington. The chaplain position carries captain rank and a $2400 annual salary.
The Deerfield Farm Women's Club spent a pleasant afternoon March 15 at Mrs. L. H. Marsh's home. Guests shared Irish jokes, heard a paper on The Parlor versus the Livingroom by Mrs. Pulliam, discussed picture hanging, and enjoyed recitations including Last Day of School by Miss Mathiel Dudley. Adjournment followed a carnival of business.

The Clermont County Milk Producers Association announces its new officers. President is L. A. Kellum of Bethel, vice president I. N. Dumford of Newtonsville, secretary and treasurer Osra Donnelly of Goshen, with state delegate W. A. Knight of Bantam and alternate E. T. Sidwell of Hills Station.
On Saturday March 24 at 10 am Clara E Brose offers for sale at her residence 144 miles west of Salem church Brown County horses cows farm implements and household goods. At 11 am at the front door of the court house Sheriff Swing offers for sale the Amelia H Rockwell farm 134.22 acres near Mulberry appraised at 9000 with good location and productive soil.
The new tax rule forces taxpayers to prepare and file asset lists with the county auditor or risk losing a $100 exemption. If listings are late or incomplete a 50 percent penalty applies, pushing a $1,000 listing to $1,500 on the duplicate. Many will forget items, fearing underfunded operations and last year’s totals. The Clermont county infirmary filed its semi annual report on March 5 listing six months of operations. It records an average of 63 inmates with an average cost of 47.37 per inmate and notes five discharges and five deaths. Of 63 inmates, eight men and two women, 45 are over 60, and 49 are native born Ohioans. Employee pay totaled 1076.07 and medical care 100. Other expenses include groceries 918.50, fuel and light 798.50, dry goods 208.46, tobacco and other items, implements 52.67, burial 64.00, and other ordinary costs 318.26. Receipts include farm product sales 147.33, inmates in other counties 526.84, paid by inmates 17.30, and other sources 160. The farm spans 120 acres with 70 under cultivation.

At the teachers examination in Waverly on March 3, about 51 teachers took the test and nine were successful. Some of the successful were renewals of existing certificates.

Several locals, including Miss Mayme Ulrey and Miss Charlotte Meyers, visit relatives. Mrs. Henry Dietz dies at home. A sewing circle meets at Monterey. Anna Taylor hosts a St Patrick’s party with decorations.
James H. Slade also known as Dick, born near Concord April 8 1843, died March 11 1917 at Elk Lick aged 73 years 11 months 8 days. Married Mary E. Burnet on November 8 1870, survived by widow and four children Lennie Slade Rein hart Stella Slade Brown Irvin E. Slade.Civil War veteran of the 59th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he served from 1861 to 1864, noted for steadfast character and community regard.
A compiled obituary notice recounts Frederick Rapp born 1833 in Wurttemberg who gained U.S. citizenship in 1858 before moving to a valley home with his family. The Batavia Odd Fellows will visit Owensville next Saturday evening to confer the initiatory degree on six candidates. A revived membership is promised and a fine time is expected for all attendees.
