In Washington County near Loyal Bana a Shultheis family of four adults from Germany lost their home in recent floods. They ate raw pork three weeks ago salted with only salt. Illness followed. Mrs Maria Shultheis died and was buried. The husband and two brothers deteriorated, with death feared for all.
In Portsmours Ohio on March 19 a gas leak from a pipe under A Steindams brick residence filled the cellar with gas. Mr and Mrs Steindam went to shut it off and the gas ignited in the dining room causing a violent explosion. The house was wrecked with $1,000 damage. the couple were badly burned and injured, two daughters upstairs escaped unharmed.
Mrs Geor gia Miller a widow aged forty five collapsed in prayer at a South Halstead Street mission last night. She had heart disease and died with head bowed in worship as the congregation left. The body was taken to a nearby home awaiting the coroner.
The Express Robbery tale from St Louis traces a silver coin shipment recovered at the U S Express office in Kansas City. Tiller, marked as the hoarder, refuses to implicate McPadden while grand larceny charges of $40 000 loom. A man named McFadden ingested a vial from his pocket, prompting fears of a fatal outcome.

In Hindon on March 18 Senator Hawley proposed a bill to pay 25000 dollars for rescuing or determining the fate of the Greeley expedition. It would authorize a proclamation in all foreign ports offering a reward for information on Greeley’s fate or for the rescue of the party. Seafaring men note stout ships and daring crews cruise Arctic waters, and a reward could spur searches for the Greeley party.
Washington March 19 Postmaster General Gresham stated the new fast mails will improve service at no extra cost to the public. He said the project uses available means and does not raise prices, delivering better facilities without added charges.
Four children of Esquire G. D. Alsop near Louisville were given opium by their mother by mistake while preparing powdered rhubarb. Two children died, the others are not expected to live.
Early today in Boston at No 4 Boylston Place Policeman Kendall faced Jack Donovan the notorious desperado in a basement confrontation. After a brutal struggle Kendall fired his revolver wounding Donovan who died ten minutes later. Kendall survived but injured.

Council Bluffs Ia March 19 Hon E P Cadwell an attorney was held up by a man named Healy at the muzzle of a cocked pistol and forced to sign a check for 800 dollars claiming Cadwell had wronged him in a cattle deal. Payment was stopped. Healy is wealthy and well known in trade circles.
Washington March 17 The special deficiency bill approved by the House lists items including 753000 for Pension Bureau examiners fees 40000 for travel expenses for examiners 225000 to complete the St Louis building 100000 for Cincinnati and 30000 for the Marine Hospital at Memphis.
San Francisco March 19 The levee of Roberts Island near Stockton California broke last night and destroyed 27000 acres of wheat valued at 500000 dollars.
ANNAPOLIS March 19 The House approved a Senate bill to cut the marriage license fee from four dollars fifty cents to sixty cents. Aimed at easing costs for couples, the measure awaits final passage.

Katie Evans six year old daughter of Officer John Evans fell down three flights of stairs at 105 East Second street yesterday afternoon. She sustained injuries and died an hour later. The accident is a severe blow to the officer who recently resumed duties after a broken ankle two months ago.
Charles Langheimer known as Dickens' Dutchman died in the penitentiary and was quietly buried in the potter's field after serving fifty of his seventy five years in confinement. He was not a prisoner at death but was allowed to return to die in prison, which he considered home.

A Danville man, drunk on a Midland train, confessed to killing two Black men named Sam Clark and Henry Clark and wounding U S Bailiff Lee Jones. Police arrested him today after the confession surfaced from the incident yesterday on the train.
Henry Cramer longtime Baltimore and Ohio conductor was instantly killed in Grafton West Virginia when he was knocked under a train. The incident occurred March 20 as the man worked near the track.
London reports a Commons bill aims to limit patent medicine sales until official testing declares them non-poisonous. It requires the postmaster general to establish telegraph offices at all circuit post offices and nearby offices, with salaries of at least 500 annually. It sets telegram rates by distance, prioritizes government business, and authorizes sealed proposals for telegraph transmission contracts for ten years.
Point Pleasant West Virginia March 21 A conflict with Judge Jackson of the United States Court arises as the Key stone Bridge Company, which built the bridge for the Ohio Central Road, has not been paid and resists completing the bridge. The road is under a receiver and needs a telegraph line. the judge ordered the receiver to string a wire, the company resisted prompting a marshal from Charleston to seize and hold the line. during the night the Bridge Sommony cut the wire and barricaded the bridge ends. an appeal led Judge Jackson to dispatch an armed posse to Parker serves authority.
The Senate Committee on Public Health reported wholesale adulterations in food, especially butter mixed with tallow oil bone oil and lard oil. Of thirty butter samples bought in New York only ten were genuine, with no proper labels. Saloons boarding houses and second class hotels are large buyers of the bogus butter.

A sanitary inspector with police raided New Jersey meat express wagons entering New York last night. One hundred fifty calves were found unfit for food and seized, sent to the offal docks. The raid caused consternation among the expressmen.
Burrato March 21. A Lake Shore Road freight train that had parted came together hard near Angola. An oil car exploded setting fire to the train and a western-bound oil car. Two brakemen Wm Frawley and Newell Silvers were badly burned. Loss put at 25000 dollars.
Mount Carmel Pa March 21 Michael Toney a lad sixteen was arrested Wednesday while in the act of changing a switch to wreck an EEV roast train and he promised an associate to help loot wounded passengers.
