In Pamapetrsia Penns, the death of twelve year old Peter Moher at 14 Ann Street is studied by the Coroner. The primary cause is lung hemorrhage with congenital cyanosis from a heart opening that normally closes at birth. Doctors note its rarity and interest to medicine, with Dr. J P Stritmatter involved and autopsy sought but not granted.
Washington March 11 The Department of Agriculture will report consumption and distribution of corn and wheat to March 1. About 67 percent of the corn is consumed leaving 33 percent on hand versus 36 percent for 1882. Wisconsin and Minnesota total 9 million bushels vs 24 million last year. In the Ohio Indiana Illinois Iowa belt producing 558 million bushels stock is 152 million, down from 1883. Merchantable corn stands at 6 percent about 936 million bushels, average 8 percent in normal years. Unmerchantable corn exceeds 500 million bushels north of the Ohio River and west of Pennsylvania. Average merchantable corn value about 6 1/2 cents per bushel or roughly 480 million dollars. unmerchantable about 5 1/2 cents and 167 million. Seven percent of the crop unharvested. Wheat on hand last year 119 million bushels, 2 1/2 percent of crop. March 1 1883 on hand 143 million. The report will include the 1883 crop quality results.
Paris March 11 The Committee of the Chamber of Deputies reviewing pork import policy plans to consult the General Councils of departments with government approval. Meanwhile M Lanessan a committee member asks the government to suspend the pork embargo until a final decision is reached.
The season's worst blizzard paralyzes travel with all services halted. Rail traffic is heavily delayed or abandoned, and snowdrifts reach twenty feet near St. Vincent. Officials report no major disaster yet, but conditions remain dire across the region.
A Scave in Canada reports that guards are stationed at Parliament buildings Government House and Osgood Hall with additional measures at the Education al Department and other public buildings. City detectives monitor all comers to the city and stay at railroad stations while authorities refuse to provide details on the calls for these precautions.
Burglars entered the L S Good Co. dry goods store on Don Main street last night and stole about 800 dollars worth of silks and satins. Entrance was gained from the rear in a bold, bold action. A small amount of money was also taken and merchandise scattered around.
Tonquin advices say the French column moving on Bac Ninh from Haidzuong won a notable engagement with the enemy. Admiral Courbet has moved the Ironclad to Quinhbon and says the coast in that area is blockaded.
A Michigan Central train struck a broken rail about 100 miles from BurraLto and overturned the sleeper Garagon. Fifteen passengers were aboard including actress Carrie Swain and journalist D A Gaylord. Most injured were bruised but none seriously hurt.
Saint Petersburg March 12 The Council of the Empire approves by a large majority the Russo American Company plan to build grain elevators across the country. Editor Michael Katkoff of the Official Journal Moscow opposes the measure on patriotic grounds, casting doubt on imperial sanction.
A destructive prairie fire started by a locomotive spark near Kinsey Kansas yesterday afternoon is burning ranches dwellings and other property. Mrs George W Matheny was burned to death while attempting to save her home.
Washington March 12. The Department of Justice dispatch warns US Attorneys and Marshals about rumors of persons aiding heinous crimes by shipping explosives to foreign ports. It cites Revised Statutes sections 5353 5354 5355 278 and 4279 and urges diligence to prevent offenses and prosecute violators. Benjamin Harris Brewster Attorney General delivers the directive.
Denver Colorado March 11 A snow slide buried the Woodstock station seventy five miles southwest of Leadville destroying every house in the town Seventeen people were trapped and fifteen are feared dead Mrs Doyle the station keeper and another woman were rescued with injuries A section hand’s body was recovered and efforts continue The winter snowfall across Colorado’s mountain districts is unprecedented with up to eight feet of snow on the level and ravines up to one hundred feet deep.
British forces reached Baker Pasha's position at Sereiba at midnight and began a square advance toward the rebel camp. Abyssinian scouts report Osman Digna surrounded by a large rebel force. About five thousand rebels sighted twelve miles from Suakim. battle imminent.
A major blaze in Kalamazoo Michigan on March 12 destroyed twelve stores on one side of Allegan Street including Peck’s Bank and eleven on the opposite side, with the Chaffee House surviving. It damaged Sherman House and three newspaper offices as winds hampered efforts. losses may reach a quarter million.
Frederick Vierk an eighty five year old German man was found dead near his barn in Lind Wisconsin with his skull crushed. A mallet lay beside him and no other traces of the killer exist. He held considerable money which is now missing.
Albany reports the river flowing over the docks along the entire city front. Water has risen about two and a half feet since nightfall and continues to rise steadily.
Whameron March 11 The Governor respited Lewis F List sentenced to hang Friday next for the murder of George Taylor until the second Friday of March 1940.
New Lexington March 10 Rev B M O Boylan on trial for involvement in the abduction of A J Mc Devitt and assault with intent to kill was discharged tonight as charges were not proven.
CutcaGco March 10. Peter Schmitz, contractor, who choked his wife to death ten days ago, hanged himself in his cell this afternoon by tying a cord around his neck and drawing it tight with his hands.
In St Paul on March 11 Harry Turner twelve year old son of Edward H Turner killed himself with a revolver after being scolded by his mother. The tragedy occurred in the family home and the boy died instantly from a shot to the heart.
Bennington Vt March 11 The fugitive postmaster Tiffany fled with a shortage of several thousand dollars in his accounts. He has not yet been captured.
Lorpon March 11. Oxford University has decided to grant women the same examinations as are given men.
Rebels attacked the English camp at Suakim beginning at daybreak. British forces formed squares and repulsed a large rebel assault with heavy casualties. Official counts cite about 4 000 rebels killed and 6 000 wounded. British losses include officer and several sailors wounded and one killed.
Pocanongas Virginia March 13 A deadly gas explosion wiped out 155 miners at Laurel Creek Coal Mine one o clock this morning. The faning machine engine and cars were blown 300 feet from the entrance. The mine's ventilation failed as gas reached explosive levels and workers were overcome. The engineer and a colored boy near the mouth were hurled far away with mangled remains found scattered. The community, built by Southwestern Improvement Company, includes many Northern and Pennsylvanian miners.
Lawrence Kansas reports at 3 pm yesterday the 50 year old Squire Bradley ate five dozen eggs a half pound of bacon and a loaf of rye bread all fried by him on a wager within twenty one minutes. The total meal weighed nine and three fourth pounds.
PouGHKEEPs New York March 13 Seneca Miller one of three men who threw dynamite into a Pawling residence was convicted of second degree murder Mulkins the third man pleaded guilty to second degree murder and each received life imprisonment.
Milwaukee report says James Harris a farm-hand calling himself Wild Bill of the Prairie was arrested for the murder of Frederick Vierke in Lind on Tuesday night. Harris, a known dime novel reader, vanished after the killing.
Frederick J. Deiterichs, a paying teller at the Laclede National Bank in St Louis, has been found short about $30,000 and then disappeared. Local authorities pursue his whereabouts as the bank braces for loss and investigation.
A naphtha loading onto a lighter caused a package to explode triggering secondary blasts. The incident damaged other packages valued at 15000 dollars and occurred at Hunter's Point on March 13.
MilwaUkee reports Prentiss Tiller, the Pacific Express clerk from St Louis, was captured today and $80,000 of the stolen funds recovered. Washington March 14. The Post Office Department cites the new fast mail train as crucial, beyond merely shortening New York to Chicago time. It will prompt Chicago railroads to deploy fast services, cutting West and Northwest passenger travel by eighteen to twenty four hours as several leading lines move to implement the plan.
Denver dispatch reports an Aspen Mountain snow slide last Monday night killed Vallejo mine workers George Marshall William O'Brien and John McGinnity. Abi Higgins and another miner are reported missing.
Harrisburg Illinois March 14 details on the tornado that swept Saline County last Tuesday describe six farm houses destroyed and many more unroofed or damaged. Barns fences cribs and outbuildings were torn, with extensive farm property wrecked by the storm.
