Washindon March 26 The nomination of Mr Sargent to be minister to Russia was a total surprise to most persons at the Capitol today. Prince Leopold, fourth son of Queen Victoria and Duke of Albany, died suddenly in Cannes at two this morning. Born April 7, 1853, he last visited America in 1880 and attended the Chicago National Convention that nominated Garfield. He was en route to Darmstadt for his niece Princess Victoria of Hesse's wedding. The Queen's reaction was twofold, deeply affected and informed this afternoon.
In Roanoke County near Salem sixteen year old Leslie Lavender attempted to rob farmer Alexander Owens. The wife rushing out after a shot was shot by Lavender. He then tried to kill Owens’s mother but she escaped and alerted neighbors. Lavender fled, sought protection with a relative who refused, stole a horse, and fled into Montgomery County. Owens and his wife are thought fatally wounded.
