Stonelick Township Leads Red Cross Drive In County

Rev Rainsberger county Red Cross chair says floods delayed the 1945 drive. Eight townships report 13000 raised toward 28800 county quota. Stonelick, led by Misses Jean Whitworth and Mary Catherine Bowman, surpassed quota and finished first. Batavia Township reports 2260 toward 3800. Floodwaters receding, completion expected next week.

New Richmon d Soldier Killed in Action

Pfc. Carl M. Bruce, 19, of New Rich mond Ohio, was reported killed in action in Belgium on January 2. An honor student in the 1943 high school class, he earned the American Legion Medal. He served in the Armored Infantry after enlisting in July 1943 and going overseas in September. He leaves a sister, Miss Marie Bruce.

Batavia Legion Celebrates Twenty-Sixth Birthday Party

The Frank W. Weaver Post American Legion celebrated its twenty sixth anniversary at Batavia Armory with a potluck supper and dancing. A pink and white cake served about 100 guests, with committees named from both the post and Ladies Auxiliary. Also included is a Look Backward item recalling a March 23 1845 accident where Stephen Haywood died after a tree accident in Union Township.

In a March 20 1895 report two sportsmen Ed Ely and Frank Blasier bagged six waterfowl after a sleet storm paused migrations. The haul included two mallards one merganser one teal and one hybrid. The merganser is a fish duck noted for its capacity to swallow fish including sunfish and minnows.

Wartime Army Wire Team Leader Honored in Pacific

Tech. Sgt. Ralph J. Brehany of Milford led a winning wire laying team in a 147th Infantry tournament in the South Pacific. Other local servicemen report injuries and recoveries, or reassignment processing after tours in Europe and the South Pacific, with promotions and medals noted for several air and bombardment crews.

Loveland Sailor Keith Carpenter Killed in Action

Keith Carpenter, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carpenter of Loveland, was killed in the European theater February 28 while serving as an Able Seaman in the Merchant Marines. A Loveland High School 1941 graduate, he had served nearly two years. He is survived by his parents a brother John and many relatives and friends.

Batavia woman Mrs. Delphia Sanderman joined the Medical division of WACS in Cincinnati last Saturday and will begin basic training April 1 at Ft. Des Moines Iowa She will then transfer to Oglethorpe Georgia for intensive surgical nurse training.

Loveland Plans for Cub Pack Meeting

A meeting of all parents of boys aged 9 to 11 will be held in the Mayor's office on Thursday evening March 22 at 8 PM to discuss organizing a Cub Pack for the area. Cubbing operates under the Boy Scouts of America.

Public asked to conserve fuel

Clermont War Price and Rationing Board urges residents to stretch fuel oil to season end amid a critical East Coast shortage. Board notes even 40 to 59 gallons per household adds up across many homes and cites a denied request for 600 gallons. Suggestions include lowering thermostats closing unused rooms checking equipment dressing warmly pulling shades and installing weather stripping storm doors and windows.

War Effort Car Eligibility Narrowed for 1942 Models

With few new 1942 automobiles left the eligibility list drops to a small number. Only workers crucial to the war effort or community welfare qualify. Travel between home and work is not eligible. Used 1942 car eligibility relies on a 200 mile per hour mileage preference.

Clermont County announces flat corn prices for farm sales with No 2 at 1.16 dollars, No 3 at 1.15 and No 4 at 1.15, moisture not over 15 percent. Delivery adds 4 to 6 cents per bushel based on transport and excess discounts.

Boy Scouts Lead Paper Drive for Eisenhower Medal

Clermont County Boy Scouts join nationwide drive collecting 150000 tons of waste paper during March and April 1945. The War Production Board backs the effort, with General Eisenhower promoting the campaign and a 1000 pound reward earning a General Eisenhower Waste Paper Campaign Medal. A shell case award is also given for daily 1000 pound per unit collections, with a museum-style citation.

Native Clermontians Return After 24 Years Absence

The L. V. Keister family, long in Texas farming the Rio Grande Valley, move back to Clermont County. They purchase the former Jordan farm west of Bethel and say returning is like coming home. They have re subscribed to The Courier after returning to Ohio.
