A reader urges Batavia merchants to improve window displays to attract customers. The editor agrees the idea is timely, noting some towns show cartoonish storefronts, but many shops could use more attractive, original arrangements to improve the town’s appeal.
Grange groups outline a schedule of degree work with multiple initiations. Events span Mt Gerth Sabana Marathon Goshen Bethel Owensville Newtonsville Wareham Batavia Clermont and Williamsburg with first to fourth degrees and joint programs. all grangers invited.
East Hill Farm Women's Club has held three meetings at the homes of Mrs. Mantie Binkley Mrs. Mary Sammons and Mrs. Ethel Bernstein. The group aims to improve farm living and encourage farm women's involvement in community matters. The next meeting at Mrs. Mattie Prd's home will feature radio speaker Miss Marcia Wheeler.
Daniel C. McCarthy, director of public relations for the National Tuberculosis Association, will keynote the Clermont County Tuberculosis and Health Association meeting in the county courthouse assembly room at 8 p m on Monday March 24. Final 1940 Seal Sale reports will be released. officials urge broad community attendance to plan next year’s program.
The Batavia Public School third grade staged an original play Fiesta written by the pupils. The Mexican market scene featured songs and dances with a large cast including Pedro Pancho and Ros a as main characters. Announcers were Janice West and Mabel Adams while Miss Howe used the unit for education about Mexico and its culture.
A rabid dog on the Ohio Pike area near Amelia to Tabasco is at large. Clermont County dog warden George Medary warns residents to watch all dogs, especially those bitten by the small black and white dog, to prevent rabies. The message urges vigilance before anyone contracts the disease.
A banquet and dance honoring the Amelia high school basketball team and cheerleaders will be held Friday night March 21. Dinner is one dollar per plate, reservations due by Wednesday. The event runs 6 30 to 8 30 with letters awarded and music by James Carlisle's Cavaliers. attendees to the dance admitted free.
Miss Mary Lou Gunderloy of Batavia has been named scholarship chairman of Kappa Delta at Ohio State University in Columbus. A junior in education, she has been on the honor roll and earned a medal as the most outstanding English student at Batavia High School. She participates in Links, is a Glee Club member, and sings in the Indianola Concert and Presbyterian choirs.
The Mt Carmel Glen Este Parents Teachers Association will meet Friday at 8 p m in the school auditorium. President Mrs J G Jones will run the business session and the nominating committee will report. A panel discussion on Straight Thinking versus Crooked Thinking led by Rev Fred C Moore will feature Mr Burton Pullen L G Jones C J Harrison Stanley Pattison and John Hoerner. Music by the school orchestra under Dale Hinkle and a social hour follow.
C Nash Pharmacy on Main Street Batavia changes hands to Carl South and Louis Wolf who have worked with Nash for years. The shop will keep the Nash Pharmacy name as ownership shifts after 38 years of service dating from January 1903.
Amelia high school Glee Clubs present The Sunbonnet Girl, a two act operetta, Friday March 28 at 8 15. Tickets 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for children. Bette Davis, a junior, stars. Jack Smith and Virginia Topie head a strong cast with 32 chorus and several principals.
Ohio State University students will be arriving home this week for the spring vacation period. The list includes students from various counties and towns such as Batavia Clinton Curtiss and Moscow among others.
The Ohio Beauty Shop Owners Assn will hold a district meeting in Cincinnati at Hotel Gibson on Thursday evening March 20 at 8 p m. Miss Catherine Frick will preside. Ralph Sanborn will explain the minimum wage order and discuss the Cosmetology bill. Raymond Jeffreys will speak on organizing.
The William Brown garage in Bantam burned completely last Friday around 9 p m. The origin is undetermined but suspected to be a heating stove. Mr and Mrs Brown were away at a Bethel movie. Bethel fire department arrived too late to save equipment including tools, kerosene, oil and auto accessories.
The Bethel chapel at St. Marys Mission is to begin masses on or about April 6 conducted by Rev. Joseph Schneider from Mt. St. Marys Norwood until the church is rebuilt this summer. Services will be held in the Scott property at the east edge of Bethel.
The Women’s Society of Christian Service of Summerside Methodist Church will sponsor a Thursday evening supper and bazaar. The supper from 5 to 8 pm offers oysters and style chili homemade pies and coffee. The Easter gifts bazaar invites all to attend.
Batavia Woman's Club and Junior Woman's Club announce Folktales Around the World event featuring Miss Myrtle Wilson. Tea chairman Mrs. Vernon Martin hosts, with Mrs. Harold D. Nichols as hostess.
Mrs. Helen Jane Auxier entertained Thursday evening with a dinner party in honor of her husband. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Wm Iles Jr Norma Jean Foster Denver Calloway Mr. and Mrs. Ford Robinson Frances Kreton and Harold Gallagher. Guests departed wishing Mr. Auxier many happy returns.
Stanley Waldron received a 200 fine and six months in jail for drunken driving in Judge White's court Monday. His license was suspended for a year and he must serve ten days with probation for three years for the remaining sentence.
The I O O F of the 85th District will hold a meeting in the I O O F hall Batavia Ohio Friday evening March 21.
The Norfolk and Western Relief Fund disbursed 169000 to members and families in the last quarter of 1940. T H Farmer reports quarter receipts of 4300? net gain 42599.77, and total benefits since 1917 reach 13123842.94. The department costs 2841418.45 borne by the railroad.
The Order of Eastern Star schedules inspection dates across the 22nd district of Ohio. List includes New Richmond April 5 and Portsmouth June 24 among twenty two locations such as Loveland Goshen Mt Crab West Union Sardinia Russellville Marathon Moscow Winchester Wheelersburg Bethel Georgetown Batavia Amelia Milford Lucasville Felicity Peebles Owensville Williamsburg Ripley.
The parents of Henry and Mrs. Davis of Glen Este vanish after their two sons went missing on February 1. Deputies found the Davis home empty with furniture moved to one room and no trace of the family. Authorities in Ohio and Kentucky cooperate as the search for the boys continues.
Workers turning 65 and retiring from Social Security covered jobs should file for old age and survivors benefits promptly even if they may receive state unemployment compensation. Delays can reduce monthly federal checks or lose checks, says Edwin Baum of Cincinnati Social Security. A Cincinnati rep will visit Batavia March 25 to answer questions and aid claimants.
