Clermont County approves 1938 road building program plan

County commissioners Frank Willis Ezra Seyler and J M Hutchinson approved a 1938 road program presented by County Engineer Carl Rush. The plan allocates 44 miles of new Black Top surfacing 35 miles of traffic bound stone 10 miles of surface treatment and five bridges to be rebuilt across Batavia Franklin Goshen Jackson Miami Monroe Ohio and other townships with numerous specific project lines and mileages. At the end Dr A J Mastropaolo Batavia physician was visiting patients as a 7 pound baby girl Mary Jane was born at Good Samaritan Hospital Mother and baby are said to be well.

Bethel Residents Vote Down 3 Mill Tax Increase

Bethel residents rejected a 3 mill levy for current expenses by 182 to 168. The tally missed the required 65 percent by a wide margin, with unfavorable weather and indecision blamed for low turnout. Voters acknowledged the need for more revenue but balked at higher taxes.

The March meeting of Marathon PTA was held March 8 at the school house with good attendance. County Superintendent Frank Hoggatt spoke on Character and Religion. After business, a program and refreshments followed. Next meeting will elect officers.

Griffiths sell Batavia home to Order of Eagles

Dr and Mrs W C Griffith and Major Isaac Titus sold their Batavia residence after 89 years to the Order of Eagles last week. The house will serve as a clubhouse for the organization which now has 107 members.

A Kroger store in Amelia was robbed Monday night with about 200 dollars in cigarettes and groceries taken. A suspect reportedly entered, escaped, and fled the scene.

Merger Opposed by Clermont County Board of Education

At a Batavia meeting the Clermont County Board of Education heard district objections to a state plan reorg. A petition with 351 Mt. Carmel area electors seeks a Mt. Carmel School District from Union township. About 98 percent of local electors support the plan. Reorganization for Mt. Carmel was tabled for later action.

Auto Crash Injures Batavia Men Near Moscow

Vincent Garner and Howard Duckwall of Batavia were sideswiped on the A. & P. highway below Moscow. Garner’s car rolled three times into a ravine and was wrecked. he suffered a scalp wound while Duckwall sustained a severe cut to his right ear. The other vehicle was from Russellville.

Newtonsville PTA Presents Rubber Tires Picture Show

The Newtonsville PTA sponsors a picture show titled Rubber Tires to be shown at the school house on March 18 at 8 pm. Admission is 10 cents. Refreshments will be sold in the lunch room including coffee, sandwiches and cake at 5 cents each.

Mrs. Mary Ellen Oliver age 87 was found dead in her Mt. Carmel area residence on a Saturday by her daughter in law Mrs. Marie Burke. Coroner 8 M White filed the report.

Republicans to Meet at Amelia High School Auditorium

The next Republican county meeting will be held at the Amelia high school auditorium on Thursday March 31. A chicken supper will be served. Reservations may be made with Joe Brock in Amelia. A speaker will be announced later.

Judge Overrules New Trials in Forgery Cases

Judge Charles G. White of the Common Pleas Court overruled the motion for new trials of Ed Houston and George Murphy for forgery and passing fraudulent paper. Houston received 1 to 20 years. Murphy 1 to 20 years on two counts concurrent. They are now serving time in the Ohio penitentiary.

Youths Arrested in Tire Theft Case at Franklin

Donald Brown and William Smith, both of Mr. Carmel, arrested Friday by Sheriff Auxier and returned to Bata. Brown pled guilty before Squire Wiseman. Smith released. They may enlist in government service and have the charge dropped. Brown bound over to the grand jury.

Batavia groups unite to aid dependent children

The Batavia Boy Scouts and Batavia P T A join to collect clothing and shoes for dependent and indigent children. Gently used garments of all kinds are welcomed and remade at Bethel Sewing Center. Scouts will pick up or arrange drop offs via Mrs. Emily Moore or Scoutmaster Orville Halbisch.
