Garden Club Meeting Planned at Mrs McDonald’s

Batavia Garden Club will meet March 20 with hostess Mrs D K McDonald. Program topics include A Spot I would like to see Planted Flower combinations in the garden by Mrs Russell Speidel Vines for Various Purposes by Mrs Pearson Arrangement Spring Flowers and Best collection of Five Tulips.

Clermont Fisherman Tops Bluefish Leaderboard

Charles Dumford of Cincinnati posted a five and three quarter pound bluefish Sunday to take the lead in the bluefish tourney. Dumford, last year's blue fish prize winner, appears poised to repeat. He caught the big fish in the surf and is brother to Ed Dumford of Batavia.

Williamsburg Garden Club Hosts Reading and Plant Talks

Mrs Clarence Long entertained the Williamsburg Garden Club with co host Mrs T M Slade last Tuesday. The program included New House Plants You'd Like to Grow a devotional scripture a talk on Secrets of Better Gardening and Awakening Our Plants readings and a seed propagation demo by Mr Bunyan. Victor Wies OSU extension specialist showed colored planting photographs and refreshments were provided by Mrs Sticksel.

The Mt Carmel Association will hold its monthly meeting at the school house Monday at 2 PM. A health picture will be shown for students with Dr. Carter Health Commissioner presiding. The Worthy Grand Matron of the Eastern Star of Ohio urged each Chapter to adopt a Sister Chapter for the year. Marathon Chapter surprised Batavia Chapter with a program and filled baskets, seventeen members visiting Batavia on Monday night and the meeting adjourned after thanking Marathon for the thoughtful event.

Felicity Masonic Lodge Hosts 188 Masons

Felicity lodge hosted 188 Master Masons Friday night with Master Leo Calvert presiding. Members and visitors from the county and Indiana and Kentucky attended. Clyde Cox of Loveland conducted the inspection after the Entered Apprentice degree. Lunch followed social time. on June 2 the lodge marks its 100th anniversary with plans by the committee and a Grand Master visit.

Midnight Fire Destroys Barn at Slade Farm East of Batavia

Fire discovered at 10 30 Saturday night engulfed a large barn on the Dick Slade farm near Elk Lick four miles east of Batavia. Loss included 100 sheep 3 mules 3 milch cows 4 calves 500 bushels of corn and farm implements. Tenant Jerry Rose from Kentucky owned stock. Ernest Hodges Milford Ohio owned the farm. Origin unknown. stock reportedly underinsured while barn insured. Rose has eight children. rehabilitation commission may assist.

Edu-Rec Club Announces Batavia Jamboree Benefit

The Edu-Ree Club plans a two show benefit at Batavia High School Auditorium on April 1 to raise funds for a public address system. Admission is 35 cents for adults and 15 cents for children. Performers include Lazy Jim Day and Helen Dillar among Boone County Jamboree stars.

Bethel Man Fatally Injured In Middletown Crash

Adam Henderson aged 48 of Bethel died after an automobile collision in Middletown Friday night. Dwight Windsor 24 of near Loveland, charged with driving while intoxicated, was fined 250 dollars and had his license revoked. Windsor bound over to grand jury on manslaughter charge. Henderson left a widow and two sons. funeral held at Kennedy Funeral Home in Bethel.

Five Hurt In Auto Crash Near Williamsburg

Five persons were injured in a Route 74 collision one and a half miles south of Williamsburg Monday night. Earl Hannah 28 Bethel and his wife plus Herman Canter 24 suffered facial lacerations and Earl Hannah had a broken nose and fractured jaw. In the other car Victor Ellison 37 of Williamsport operator and Ralph Bentley were cut and Bentley sprained a left leg. Deputy Sheriff Frank Perry investigated and said Hannahs headed toward Batavia while Ellison’s auto was bound for Williamsburg. They were treated by Williamsburg doctors.

High School Baseball Teams Sought in Clermont County

Efforts mount to revive baseball as a spring sport in Clermont County high schools. Four schools Goshen Owensville New Richmond and Amelia currently play a spring season with two months of games in April and May. Additional schools Batavia Felicity Bethel and Moscow are likely to join after a planning meeting to schedule participation.

Batavia Pushes Free Mail Delivery Within City Limits

A movement in Batavia seeks local free mail delivery inside the corporate area. Batavia is Clermont county’s only second class post office without such service. The effort is backed by the Batavia Rotary Club and petition signatures will be mailed to Congressman James G. Polk once filled.

Funeral for Mrs. Clara Fetter at St. Louis Church Owensville

Funeral services for 74 year old Mrs. Clara Fetter widow of J. C. Fetter were held Monday at St. Louis Church Owensville. She died unexpectedly Friday night and leaves a daughter Cecelia Fetter who was postmistress at Owensville. Services were conducted by the Wm. Sterling Moore Funeral Home Batavia.

Batavia Officials Hope for Route Change to Improve Street

Batavia village leaders report optimism after a Columbus visit on plans to reroute 5th street to Route 74. The proposed path would remove two sharp turns near the hill, create room for new building sites, and is under study by Frank L. Raschig, with results expected soon. Mayor J. M. Wiseman, Forrest E. Grand Jury Indicts Pownall for Murder

Clermont County grand jury returns an indictment charging George L. Pownall with second degree murder of his housekeeper Mrs. Bertha Mae King. He will be taken to Lima Hospital for 30 days of observation before trial. The panel met in a special session Tuesday morning.

County names replacement on Child Welfare Board

The Board of County Commissioners named W. J. Snider to replace Ernest Ruffner on the County Child Welfare Board to satisfy legal party balance. The prior Ruffner appointment was ruled illegal under Section 3081 of the General Code of Ohio. Members serve five-year terms and are unpaid beyond expenses.
