Auditor Searles’ case in common pleas court sought higher deputy pay after the taxing department moved in. A $2000 requisition was reduced to $1680, a sum double that allowed in other offices, reflecting two years of extra work by the auditor and staff.
A full house enjoyed a town hall entertainment Friday night with the high school orchestra performing finely under Prof Blair. Students wore costumes and earned loud applause while the event raised funds for school needs.
Williamsburg will host a five day Chautauqua from July 6 1916 offering early access to seven and ten day circuit attractions. The Appello Concert Co a top tier Lyceum and Chautauqua act for a decade joins the lineup.
The Batavia Realty Company will erect a modern garage on the rear lot of the Hamilton Building. Plans received yesterday and are under contractor review. The structure will use tile brick or cement with a cement floor and will house Mr McCormick Ford dealer with full Ford line supplies and trained workers. Construction starts at once.
Little Louise Ely underwent a Sunday operation that drained 44 ounces of fluid around the heart. She gained instant relief, revived, and asked for food, with hopes she will soon be herself again.
Mrs Joseph Kirlach died at her daughter Mrs Harry Mefford's home last Wednesday at 79 after a brief illness. Her remains were brought to Spring street residence where services were held Saturday by Rev Wegner and burial was in Union cemetery. Four daughters and one son survive, all grown.
Batavia Lodge No. 104 F. and A. M. collaborates with M. J. Kain for a two performance moving picture show on Tuesday night March 21 to benefit the lodge. First show at 7 15 p m and second at 8 45 p m. All Masons urged to attend with family and friends. Admission ten cents.
Clermont County launches a statewide Corn Special to Washington for autumn 1916. Local men and businesses pledge funds and support for prize winners. many named donors from Batavia Milford Bethel and Felicity contribute amounts up to 800 dollars. Further contributions are being collected and organizers urge additional donors to contact County Superintendent H O Aultman.
Miss Hulbert of city gave an instructive talk on health to patrons, mainly mothers, at the schoolhouse last Friday afternoon. She is versed in child care, runs Bamford Hills Camp for 200+ children each summer, and teaches Hygiene in Cincinnati public schools, with the Woman's Club arranging the talk.
Citizens of Mt. Orab vote March 4 on a $4000 electric light bond issue with only 12 votes against. Work will be funded to install lighting infrastructure in the town.
Chas. W. Ripple, manager of the West Union electric light plant, announces current work to install an ice plant with a three and a half ton capacity. He argues surplus power would permit a plant twice as large later, and notes all extra products could be sold to outsiders. Build it large enough from the start.

Congressman C C Kearns will award a free trip to Washington D C this fall to the top boy or girl from Adams Brown Clermont Scioto Highland and Pike counties in the Junior Corn Growing Contest. Entry blanks and rules are available and contestants are urged to apply promptly as the prize is the only one announced so far. Clermont is expected to field its largest class yet for the trip.
Mrs Chas Woodmansee of Felicity died Monday at 10 45 am after an operation for peritonitis following a suspected ice cream poisoning. A Batavia native aged 45 leaves a husband and two sons. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm from the residence. The town mourns her loss.
A long obituary notes Frances Kyrlach born January 21 1837 in Rati Austria married Joseph Kyriach in 1861. They emigrated to Cincinnati in 1842, endured war service, raised twelve children, and after years on a Clermont county farm moved to Batavia. She died March 8 1016 at 79 in Union Cemetery with funeral by Rev Wegner. The piece ends with a hatmaker notice.
A veteran mail article dated January 26 1916 from Sedro Wolly Washington writes to Co K 27 O and others thanking them for supporting the U S flag. He recalls travels across Washington Oregon and California extols western scenery and natural resources from Bellingham to Sedro Wolly and along the Puget Sound and urges patriotism and loyalty to the GOP while recounting fishing escapades and camp life. He signs M Huron.
County Commissioners met in a three day session to approve numerous bills including Ezra Ansteatt and others, hear repairs and pike work updates, and adjourn to March 7 1916. Contracts awarded for pike repairs and bids planned for jail and infirmary physician on March 20 1916. A resolution directs apportionment of pike repair funds among townships and shifts levy responsibilities to trustees. A borrowing plan of 8000 is approved to cover outstanding legal claims with note renewals and bank loans outlined.
Prof Blair entertained seniors and guests at the town hall Friday night after an event at Mrs Jennie Titus home with ice cream cake and fruit. Guests included Estella Brown Will Keen and Dr and Mrs M S Griffith and teachers. The high school orchestra provided music as the young band prepares for spring commencement.
Milford schools close May 19 with a May Festival on May 5 at the town hall and Class Day on May 12 followed by commencement on May 18. The baccalaureate sermon is May 14 by Rev. R. W. Owens. Of 80 graduates, 15 are tuition pupils, marking a highly successful year.

The Wilson Quartet boosted music, and the men’s meeting drew a strong crowd. Evangelistic services will run each morning and evening Sunday, with nightly services during passion week and Bishop Anderson to preach one evening. A definite announcement will follow.
Authorities say pigeons account for about 20 percent of hog cholera spread. Farmers should confine or dispose of pigeons as they fly between yards and spread germs. In 1916 hog cholera losses reached 760 million dollars. if one-fifth is due to pigeons, a culling premium could be paid. Pigeons may be eaten young, but confinement is advised.
The Oleander Encampment of Batavia sails to Sardinia tonight to confer the Royal Purple degree on a class of candidates. This is their third Sardinia visit with a new outfit and standout appearance. The lodge and encampment report the most candidates this year in the district, signaling a boom.
The new law requires candidates with a salary to pay one half of one percent of yearly pay to the election board clerk when filing nomination papers. It reduces petition signatures to five and funds election expenses.
Report from Gallipolis notes West Virginia officials uncovered a novel whiskey smuggling method into the dry state. Two young women detained last week were found wearing pantalettes with sixteen pockets apiece, each pocket concealing a pint flask of whiskey.
