Hopping resigns as Batavia executive head of schools

Batavia board accepts the resignation of Paul Hopping effective when a replacement is found. Hopping cited increasing job pressures and plans to teach in Batavia schools in chemistry history and English. He served 17 years and had just signed a new five year contract.

Roy J. O'Brien Dies in Florida

Roy J. O'Brien 62 died Saturday at his Orlando home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Mt. Morich Cemetery in a graveside service. He formerly ran the Marie mont Garage and owned auto dealerships in Bethel and Amelia before retiring in 1958 and moving to Florida. He was also a noted beef cattle breeder at his Lindale farm and is survived by his wife Bessie, a son Robert J. O'Brien of Tampa, two daughters Mrs. Robert Helton and Mrs. Michael Kennedy of Cincinnati, and eight grandchildren.

Rally Launches Campaign To Pass School Bond Issue

The Amelia Steering Committee for Better Schools held a rally at Amelia high school with 250 people to start an all out effort for a May 5 bond issue. Rev Robert Chesnut outlined goals and a plan to contact every home to secure pledges and votes.

Crusade Volunteers Named In Clermont And Pierce Townships

Lawrence Ishardt of Williamsville will chair Pierce Township for the American Cancer Society Crusade, recruiting volunteers to spread information and visit residences. Charles Carey of Milford named special gifts chairman for Clermont County Crusade, recruiting Crusaders to contact big-gift donors. Carey is an accountant with Schenley Distillers and is married with three children.

Veteran Newsman Succumbs In Fire

Mt Carmel veteran newsman William H. Shafer died in a Friday fire at his Mt. Carmel home. Fire chief Ray Riggs said Shafer likely started the blaze while smoking on a sofa and attempted to escape. his body was found at the door after firefighters forced it open. Damages were estimated at 4500 dollars. Shafer, 75, served 30 years at the Cincinnati Times Star and held Kentucky editor duties before retiring in 1956. He later worked as a courthouse reporter and real estate writer and was known for dog fanciers and Adashay kennels in Mt Washington. He leaves a sister, Bertha Magavin. Graveside services were held Tuesday at Mt Washington Cemetery.

East Fork Flood Threat Looms Over Batavia Area

The East Fork of the Miami River crested at 66.5 feet as Batavia Perintown and Milford faced flood damage. Clarence Smith, father of six, drowned after a boat accident in swift river waters near Possum Hollow Road. Waist-deep water forced Clermont Distributing to halt pumping. Auxier Gas losses include hundreds of cylinders and a large storage tank.

Youth, 13, Hurt When Hit By Car Near Home

John W. Caddell Jr., 13, of 1198 Cincinnati Batavia Pl., was struck by a car at 5 45 p m Friday near his home. He received 11 stitches for a cut lip and bruises to the right hip. He was treated and released. The driver Arabelle Grether, 42, of 8975 Hockstock Lane Batavia was not cited. State Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

Body of Clarence Smith Recovered After Flood Drowning

The body of 46 year old Clarence Smith was recovered at 4 p.m. Wednesday from an island in the East Fork about a mile from his home after drowning Monday. Police Chief Ed Colonel of Batavia and Patrolman Nick Morse directed the recovery. The body was taken to Monroe Decpher funeral home Milford by Deputy Coroner George J. Watkins.

Flood Wrecks Batavia Factory and Town Homes

A section of the Carroll Jamie son Machine Tool Co. building caved in as floodwaters rose. Damages total about 2 000 dollars to the oldest section used for storage, with no other plant areas harmed. Eight homes and several businesses flooded, town damage expected over 100 000 dollars. Clermont County Home residents lacked heat from Monday night to Tuesday afternoon. New Richmond saw about half the town evacuated by Wednesday morning.
