Civil War Historian to Speak at Clermont Society Meeting

Jay C. Mundhenk of Cincinnati will address the Clermont County Historical Society on March 10 at the Batavia Public Library. A Civil War student for 15 years he focuses on Southern cavalry, John Hunt Morgan, and collects guns and relics with Morgan's Men Inc. He will wear a period uniform and show Civil War artifacts. Hostesses are Mrs. Ralph E. Hodges, John Booker, Mrs. Louis Moore, and Mrs. William C. Earhart.

Not Guilty Chief Ed Colonel in Batavia assault case

Judge Orville Halbisch ruled Police Chief Edward H. Colonel not guilty on all counts after Attorney John Watson sat as judge. The case stemmed from a visit by Charles Colonel and the Kelleys to obtain an emergency warrant. witnesses were jailed briefly for bonding.

Batavian Easter Seal Sale Chairman Appointed

Mrs Hugh C Nichols of Batavian is named chairwoman of the Crippled Children's 1961 Easter Seal Sale announced by Sam Ausman president of the society. Other officers are L G Hause treasurer Clare K Clark secretary and Ada Hoff man vice president. The society funds local projects and services with Easter Seals only, after minimal expenses and a small national percentage.

Kiwanis Presents 300 Donation To Music Club

Owensville Kiwanis president Ray Hawley gave a $300 check to Mrs. Frank Paff treasurer of the Music Club of Clermont Northeastern schools at the February 27 meeting. Wilbur Meyers could not attend. Mrs. Robert Hayes praised the Kiwanis for supporting school music programs.

Council Renames Dr Schulze To Board Of Health

The Health Advisory Council moved Dr J C Spence from health commissioner role and seeks an explanation for his firing. They reappointed Dr A Gordon Schulze to a second five year term on the board of health. Henry Cushard of Moscow chairs the council.

Burglary Foiled At Kroger Store In West Batavia

Patrolman Tom Lindsley interrupted an attempted break in at the Kroger store early Tuesday. A homemade ladder was spotted and a lighted cigarette found, but the burglar fled before deputies arrived. No items appeared missing amid a weather related disruption at local businesses.

Kiwanis Donkey Basketball Event Boosts Local School Support

The Kiwanis sponsored the donkey basketball game at the high school, praised as a tremendous success with thanks to all organizers. The Kiwanis Club also announces its second annual music scholarship sending one worthy student to the Ohio State Summer Music Camp at Ohio State University, joined by others from the Music Club and the Northeastern PTA, with Director Myers accompanying the group.

Hopeful Thespian Takes Pageant Role in Cincinnati

Amelia High School graduate Shannon Luckey, class of 1959, appears in a pageant at Taft Auditorium Cincinnati on March 7 produced by Ralph Zimmerman. He studied at UC Evening College and Walter Eyer's Dramatic School and has acted in The Egg and I The Glass Menagerie Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Onions in the Stew Medea and The Children’s Hour. He works at McAlpin's Cherry Grove as paint department manager.

Officials Adopt Town Meeting To Benefit Citizens

County officials agreed to hold information sessions modeled on a town meeting to answer citizen questions. Zenas Anstaett chaired the discussion with department heads and a county judge likely to moderate. Sessions may occur late this month or in early April after the March 22 courthouse open house, aiming to clarify duties and aid community projects. A well child clinic was established by Clermont County Medical Society with Board of Health approval.

Health services expansion urged in Clermont County

At a February meeting the Clermont County Health Council and the League of Women Voters heard Mrs. Phillips Greene call for expanded health services. She outlined a strong health board and staff, a hospital or health center, improved outreach to United Appeal funded agencies, recruitment of health personnel, and a Civil Defense plan. The report highlighted shortages: two health department nurses for 80 530 people, 25 full time physicians, 11 part time physicians, 13 dentists, and limited nurse coverage in schools. Positive steps noted include school health policies, a regional psychiatric clinic arrangement, and a tuberculosis levy with an established clinic and eradication program.

Feed Grain Farms To Be Surveyed In Clermont County

A survey of all Clermont County farms producing feed grains will finish by March 11. The effort, led by Carey W. Thompson, aims to collect acreage histories for corn sorghum barley and oats to set fair 1961 base acreages and guide feed grain program decisions. County office representatives will interview eligible farmers and urge contact if not visited by March 11.

Children Stage Benefit Carnival at Lindale

The Greater Cincinnati Heart Fund and a local school for children with retardation benefited from a street carnival in WNHAMSVILLE. Bowen Ayers and Mary Lou Sigsby led eight youths who ran a refreshment stand games and a fortune teller to raise eight dollars for Heart Sunday. Canned goods were donated to the West Clermont Junior Women's Club for the school.

The Williamsburg Fire Department booked Hal Engle of the Interior to give a free fire safety demonstration titled Magic of Fire at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. All ages invited. admission is free.

Lions Club Backs Telephone Service Plan Endorsement

Amelia report says the Cincinnati and Suburban Bell Telephone Company proposal to extend metropolitan service was endorsed at the Lions Club meeting. The Clermont County Men’s and Women’s Republican Clubs will meet on Thursday March 9 at the D X Ranch Rt 125 with lunch served.

A new group named Citizens for Self Government aims to make Union township a village to handle local issues such as sewage disposal and planning.
