Obituary for Margaret Elizabeth Black of Clermont County

Margaret Elizabeth Black born November 30 1842 near Mt Olive Clermont County Ohio died February 4 1922 at Williamsburg Ohio aged 79 years 2 months 4 days. She married James Granville Compton January 16 1862 and had three children William E Ida May Harriet. She was a devoted homemaker lifelong Methodist. Her husband died 1905 and she became caregiver for ailing family until her death. Her memory is cherished by children grandchildren and relatives.

Batavia market sold 61 445 pounds of tobacco from 65 820 offered with average 24.92 dollars per hundred. New scripts brought 3.00 to 8.50 dollars. common smokers 8 to 184 cents. red and bright leaf grades quoted. Final sale week ending Mar 8 saw 45 895 pounds sold at 23.92 dollars per hundred and cash value about 10 980.53.

Owensville high girls outweighed Bethel girls 140 160 pounds to 110 115 pounds but Bethel won the boys game 27 to 26 in a frantic second half. Captain Beach was out for Bethel as Owensville led early before Bethel surged ahead.

The East Fork Progressive Farm Club met at Mrs. Katie Caldwell’s home on February 25. Guests included Mrs. Bessie Applegate of Cincinnati. Program featured Lincoln and Washington anecdotes, nutrition talk by Mrs. Haas, music by Goldie Hutchinson and Gretta Caldwell, discussion on brooder for early chicks led by Julia Hamilton, and a talk on American Christian obligations to Washington and Lincoln. Red Cross Chapter Names 1922 Clermont County Leaders

The Clermont county Red Cross Executive Committee met February 15 1922 at Batavia M E Church with Jamieson as chairman and Daisy Ely as secretary. Brice Hendrix son chosen county chairman for 1922 Geo McCullough vice chairman Donald Jamieson treasurer and Blanche Heidle Baugh corresponding secretary. The group discussed a Home Secretary role and a Regional Conference inviting Highland Clermont Brown and Adams counties for a one day meeting in June. Plans for entertainment and dinner were noted and the session adjourned with a note of aiming for constructive work under the new administration.

Officers to be elected in county offices this fall

The county will elect a recorder sheriff prosecuting attorney surveyor treasurer auditor clerk and one commissioner. Judges Young and Joseph and commissioners Donley and Hutson hold over. Most current Republicans seek re election though no nominations filed yet. Candidates must deposit one half of one percent of annual salary with the election board clerk to credit the county for election costs. Petitions without the proper check will not be filed.

Public Schools Report Sixth Month Attendance Totals

The six month report for Public Schools through March 3 shows grade by grade enrollment and attendance figures with the second grade leading in average attendance at 99.77 percent and several grades posting gains from the prior month. Sickness reduced overall attendance, making individual pupil names impractical to list. Mrs. Muzzey is named to fill the vacancy from Mina Hahn’s resignation.

Robert E. Eveland of Miami township announces his candidacy for county auditor on the Republican ticket. An ex serviceman with overseas duty and a supporter of the American Legion, he is described as a fair and impartial man. Fire at the Clark home on Boston hill was discovered about 3 am by occupant Mr C. and wife had moved to Batavia last week. Alarm sent to Batavia. residents fought the blaze with extinguishers. Fire started from an open grate burning through the floor. Minor damage to a local landmark.
