A reader writes the Courier decries the Mt Carmel detour on State Highway 74 bypassing Batavia. The editor replies that the contract allows the contractor to close the route and notes a plan to eliminate the detour with extra funds approved by the State Highway Department and the Railroad, urging patience and cooperation.
Clermont County Chapter of the American Red Cross announces a week long display of volunteer sewn garments in the H B Glancy window Batavia Main Street starting March 5. The unit supports civilian relief in England with another quota due by May 31 and material from National Headquarters. Clubs and organizations are urged to contact the Batavia Red Cross office at 4111 to volunteer sewing or knitting.
Reverend W. B. Bonham aged 59, retired Methodist minister, died Sunday after a heart attack following church services in New Richmond. Services set for Wednesday at 10 39 a m at T P White Son funeral home. He previously led Farmersburg Indiana church and started a local grocery, served New Richmond and Batavia Methodist churches. He is survived by his widow Ruby Brewer Bonham and son Charles C. Bonham of Chicago with Ford Motor Co.
Fire destroyed the Wigginsville Methodist Church last Sunday evening after an Epworth League meeting. Several attendees saw sparks flying from the chimney before departure. The blaze, started by roof sparks lighting the shingles, had already begun after the group left.
The Williamsville Tabasco PTA will meet at the school on Tuesday March 11 at 8 p m. The topic is Keeping Children Well with Dr Carter as guest speaker. Health pictures will be shown and all are urged to attend.
The Clermerit Courier sports writer presents the all-tournament team, choosing ten outstanding players who could start on any coach’s first squad. Names like Calloway of New Ricclumont Pinson of Bethel and Thompson of Milford are mentioned among other deserving candidates.
Ed ward Anstaett of Batavia recalls an accident 64 years ago when a needle was left in his knee. An X Ray showed the needle broke in three corroded pieces, one lodged in the knee bone, finally removed after decades. The case may set a record for longest carried needle.
Clermont County sheriff reports a 1934 Buick sedan owned by Hillard Colling of Williams Corner was stolen last Sunday around 9 p m. The theft was broadcast via the State Highway Patrol network. The thief is believed to be a 19 year old youth with an unknown Kentucky address. No arrest has been made.
Mr Hackney of the Hackney Chevrolet Garage Amelia sustained serious injuries when a tiger slipped from an automatic waist and a car fell on him. Several men lifted the vehicle to free him before he was transported to City Hospital by Dr Schue. He is reported in fair condition.
Donald Higby of Lynchburg Ohio pleaded guilty to stealing five sheep from H S Bigam near Monterey on February 20. He admitted hauling the animals to New Vienna and selling them to a dealer in a motor car. Higby is held in the County Jail on a $1000 bond and also confessed to a forged check against Bigam.

The Woman's Society of Christian Service met Thursday night with Mrs. J. C. Fitzpatrick and Miss Viola Miller giving inspiring talks on the society's work. Plans are underway for a father and son banquet soon, with the executive board to meet Mrs. R. A. Cropper Thursday night to finalize arrangements.
Reverend C. Boyd Strecker sells his ten room Owensville residence in Clermont County Ohio to Maude Horn a local Middle town High School teacher. The deal includes a large barn several outbuildings and 1 percent acres.
Batavia Grange will hold its next regular meeting on Thursday March 6 with a program on Spring. A special meeting is planned for the annual banquet at 6 30 PM in the U B Church basement on Thursday March 13 inviting all members and friends.
River men deliver 33 to 14 victory over Milford to claim county basketball crown for first time in 25 years amid disciplined play and strong defense. Preliminary Amelia over Williamsburg 33 19 as other scores tally Milford Goshen 18, New Richmond Batavia 19, Williamsburg Owensville 21, Amelia 47 Felicity 34.
Sunday morning at 9 30 a car driven by B G Cross crashed with Ray Sellars at the Fair Oak Lindale Pike and Kroger Highway intersection. Mrs Cross suffered a broken jaw and other injuries while two children were lightly hurt and a baby had a fractured skull. The other vehicle occupants Mrs Sellars and Mr Sellars received multiple injuries including three broken ribs and a head injury. A charge of reckless driving was brought against Cross.
County Auditor Blythe Jones states the PWA driven tax map project is nearly finished. Draftsman R. E. Scales, added to the county payroll last Saturday, works for Engineer Carl Rush. The system aids county workers lawyers and landowners by locating property and preserving exact boundaries for posterity. The Courier promises a fuller report in a future issue.
Mr and Mrs William Henry Davis of Batavia Pike Newton Ohio will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the Cincinnati Club Saturday They married March 8 1891 in Moscow Ohio He was born in Springfield Ohio and she in Foster Kentucky The couple have four sons one daughter and eight grandchildren Davis worked 35 years for C Crane Lumber Co and retired Mrs Eliza Davis 98 mother of William will take part in the celebration They will be at home Sunday from 2 to 5 pm on Batavia Pike two and one half miles east of Newtown
The AAA office will close on Saturday March 8 to attend a mass meeting of farmers at Chillicothe Ohio. The event launches the 1941 campaign for participation in the Farm Program. Harry N Schoole Regional Director AAA from South Dakota will be the principal speaker. AAA farmers are invited to attend.
Safety Patrolman Frank R. Perry arrested Walter Phillips of Harlan Kentucky on a drunken driving charge after his car collided with John Hartman’s parked vehicle on Water Street Batavia. Phillips and Bowman pleaded guilty with Bowman fined 50 dollars and costs 4.80 and ordered to pay Leonard 5 dollars for yard damage or spend 15 days in jail.
Amelia O. E. S. No. 338 reports a February 17 gathering with guests led by Deputy Grand Matron Mrs. Lorna Laycock from the 22nd district. The next regular meeting is March 10 at 7:89 p.m. Social hour by division No. 1 chaired by Velma Leeds.
The Junior Womans Club will hold a gathering hosted by Mrs. Tom Glaze in Place with Mrs. Pat Hillen. A response titled My Favorite Antique is expected. The event is set for Thursday March 6.
