The Ohio Supreme Court on February 23 ruled the Aikin law applies to all malt beverages, taxing any product made from malt at $1,000 annually. The ruling in Lafollette v Murray holds even non intoxicating drinks with malt must pay, uniting the court in a temperance victory.

David Judd of Amelia escaped from a county jail Friday evening around 6 30 reentered later that night and fled toward Stone Lick. Milford Marshal Malsbury and Motorman Boles recaptured Judd Saturday evening and he's back in custody with Sheriff Teal.

Dr. Thomas A. Speidel and Miss Marie Houghton of Felicity were quietly married at the bride’s parents’ home Sunday evening February 27. Rev. John Colledge officiated. Speidel is well known in Batavia and county friends wish them long, happy years together.
Elizabeth Hance widow of Abraham Hance aged 86 died at home in Jackson township on her birthday Monday February 28 as pioneer settler of the township. Survived by one daughter and two grandsons with two sons deceased. Lifelong Baptist and generous Christian. Funeral at 9 o clock Thursday at residence with interment in Citizens' cemetery Olive Branch.
Early Sunday a fire at the head of Wood Street destroyed the Frank McMillen house occupied by Charles Sprinz and family. John Hillen raised the alarm. the blaze began before 12:30 am and left only charred walls. Sprinz and family were elsewhere. loss largely covered by insurance. cause believed a defective flue.
The Courier argues Batavia should install a reliable fire alarm to awaken residents day or night during a fire. It notes many people learned of the early Sunday morning fire only late and warns a future blaze could be far more disastrous without a timely alert system.
A disastrous blaze swept West Union early last Thursday destroying the interior of the Adame county courthouse and leaving only walls. Thousands of records were reportedly lost while the building carried more than 24000 in fire insurance. Temporary offices will be set up as replacements on the original site.
